The IPCC is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change.
Info
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the leading international body for the assessment of climate change. It was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1988 to provide the world with a clear scientific view on the current state of knowledge in climate change and its potential environmental and socio-economic impacts. In the same year, the UN General Assembly endorsed the action by WMO and UNEP in jointly establishing the IPCC. The IPCC is a scientific body. It reviews and assesses the most recent scientific, technical and socio-economic information produced worldwide relevant to the understanding of climate change. It does not conduct any research nor does it monitor climate related data or parameters. Thousands of scientists from all over the world contribute to the work of the IPCC on a voluntary basis. Review is an essential part of the IPCC process, to ensure an objective and complete assessment of current information. IPCC aims to reflect a range of views and expertise. The Secretariat coordinates all the IPCC work and liaises with Governments. It is supported by WMO and UNEP and hosted at WMO headquarters in Geneva.

According to WMO, 2024 was the warmest year on record, with global mean temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average. At #COP29, IPCC Chair Jim Skea stressed our chances of limiting warming to 1.5 °C are hanging on a very slender thread. IPCC's Synthesis Report of the Sixth Assessment Report, released in March 2023, shows that continued greenhouse gas emissions will lead to increasing global warming, with the best estimate of reaching 1.5°C in the near term in considered scenarios and modelled pathways. Every increment of warming results in rapidly escalating compounding and cascading hazards and related losses & damages.More intense heatwaves, heavier rainfall & other weather extremes further increase risks for human health & ecosystems. Deep, rapid, and sustained mitigation and accelerated implementation of adaptation actions in this decade would reduce projected losses and damages for humans and ecosystems. 2024 is warmest year on record, confirms World Meteorological Organization and is likely first calendar year with global mean temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average.
📈 The World Meteorological Organization has confirmed that 2024 is the warmest year on record, based on six international datasets. 🌡️ The past ten years have all been in the Top Ten, in an extraordinary streak of record-breaking temperatures. 🔴 The global average surface temperature was 1.55°C (with a margin of uncertainty of ±0.13°C) above the 1850-1900 average. ⚠️ This latest assessment of the #StateOfClimate means that we have likely just experienced the first calendar year with a global mean temperature of more than 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average. ⬇️ Press release in comments ⬇️
