Stroke is a leading cause of death worldwide, yet its impact on families and communities often goes unnoticed. Every 3 seconds, someone suffers a stroke, leading to 6.5 million deaths each year, according to the World Stroke Organization (WSO). Survivors face severe health challenges that affect not only their own lives but also those of their loved ones—1 in 4 people will experience a stroke in their lifetime. On this #WorldStrokeDay, we join the #GreaterThanStroke campaign to raise awareness about the importance of prevention, early detection, and support for survivors. Digital health plays a pivotal role in addressing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and we are scaling these innovations to improve equitable access to care. Explore our latest article: https://lnkd.in/de_EPBWT and dive into the Global Cardiovascular and Digital Health Dashboard for insights on the burden of CVD, risk factors, and how digital health can transform care delivery https://lnkd.in/d8H77mS4 #WorldStrokeDay #DigitalHealth #CardiovascularHealth #MovementHealthFoundation #Innovation #Technology #Access

Sundays are for...... Drinking Tea and reading Martin Sandhu’s Digital Health Round-up 😊 One of this week’s feature hit home: Movement Health Foundation’s “Digital Health Solutions in Cancer Care: Opportunities and Challenges for Latin America and Africa.” As an African and digital health advocate, this topic is personal, here is why: 1. Early detection saves lives. In Africa, 80% of cancers are diagnosed at late stages, where options are limited, and outcomes are grim. Digital tools like Kenya’s AI-powered cervical cancer screening solution or SMS reminders for checkups in Latin America bring early diagnosis within reach, even for remote communities. 2. Community health workers are crucial to bridging healthcare gaps. Digital tools empower them with resources to bring cancer education, screening, and symptom management directly to patients, especially in remote and low-resource areas. For example, mobile apps for appointment reminders and symptom tracking not only support patients but make health workers’ roles far more impactful and sustainable. Investing in these workers means investing in the backbone of our healthcare system. 3. Infrastructure and literacy are vital. The obstacles are real in many parts of Africa, digital tools remain out of reach for low-income communities, or health workers may not have the training needed to use them effectively. Without reliable internet, electricity, and digital literacy, these solutions stay as pilots instead of scalable tools. Investing in infrastructure is essential to making digital health accessible for all. 4. Sustainable impact needs local ownership. Many of the digital health initiatives rely on external funding, which, while helpful, often means short-lived impact. Local ownership, strong government support, and integration into national health systems are the key to lasting success as highlighted in the article with tele-oncology services in Brazil, which enable remote cancer care, or South Africa’s web app for cervical cancer screenings. For me, this isn’t just about tech, it’s about building systems that reflect our realities and needs. Cancer should never be a death sentence due to where someone lives or their income level. A powerful read and a reminder of what’s possible when we invest in people-first digital health. #DigitalHealth #HealthEquity #TechNews #EmmaReads
