"𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐨 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟐.𝟓 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐏𝐄 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧" On September 12th, 2024, the Global Partnership for Education (𝐆𝐏𝐄) approved a 𝐔𝐒$ 𝟐.𝟓 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 Multiplier Grant to support equitable and inclusive access to quality education in Lesotho. This funding made possible through contributions from Lesotho's private sector—Econet Telecom Lesotho/Higherlife Foundation, Vodacom Lesotho 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, and Standard Lesotho Bank—marks a significant step toward improving learning outcomes for all Basotho children. As part of 𝐆𝐏𝐄's innovative financing mechanism, US$ 5 million was approved for matching investments from donors, for which Lesotho was eligible. By early 2022, UNICEF Lesotho in collaboration with the Roger Federer Foundation (RFF), successfully unlocked US$ 2.5 million. Private sector partners—Standard Lesotho Bank, Vodacom Lesotho Foundation, and Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL)/HigherLife Foundation—committed an additional US$ 3.5 million, exceeding the amount required to unlock the remaining funds. Under the GPE Multiplier Grant, every dollar from private sector partners and foundations unlocks a matching grant from GPE. The grant will bolster the Ministry of Education and Training's efforts to increase enrollment and retention of disadvantaged children in primary and secondary schools. Key interventions include scholarships for vulnerable children, re-entry programs for out-of-school youth, and governance improvements in the education sector, ensuring no child is left behind. In addition to improving access, the grant will strengthen academic supervision and mentoring systems in Lesotho. The goal is to enhance the quality of education by ensuring teachers receive adequate support, while technology-enabled assessments and early warning systems will help reduce dropout rates. Digital tools will also transform classrooms into vibrant, interactive learning environments. Through the joint efforts of private sector partners and UNICEF in supporting the Ministry of Education and Training, the GPE grant will lay the foundation for a stronger education system, empowering Basotho children with the tools and knowledge needed to unlock their full potential. #ForEveryChild

Zusammen mit unseren Botschaftern Roger Federer und Kai Pflaume machen wir uns stark für mehr Bildung in der Welt! 🎾 Was die Teilnahme an einer Soziallotterie mit gemeinnützigem Engagement zu tun hat? Das haben wir im Rahmen des unvergesslichen Laver Cup 2024 in Berlin erfahren. Bei dem Tennisturnier waren neben einem Team der Deutschen Postcode Lotterie und unseren Botschafter*innen Katarina Witt und Kai Pflaume auch glückliche Teilnehmende unserer gemeinnützigen Soziallotterie zu Gast, um sich zusammen mit unserem internationalen Botschafter Roger Federer auszutauschen. Mit beeindruckenden 20 Grand Slam-Titeln ist Federer nicht nur einer der größten Tennisspieler aller Zeiten, sondern auch ein inspirierender Mensch. 🌍 Mit der Roger Federer Foundation leistet er durch Bildungsprojekte in Afrika seit Jahren bemerkenswerte Arbeit, um von Armut betroffenen Kindern eine bessere und selbstwirksame #Zukunft zu ermöglichen: Bereits drei Millionen Kinder konnten von einer besseren Bildungsqualität profitieren. Das Team glaubt daran, dass Bildung der Schlüssel zur Armutsbekämpfung ist. Open community schools are community-led efforts to widen access to education. They help address the challenge of access to education for children in underserved rural communities. The Roger Federer Foundation is promoting this initiative across six countries in Southern Africa, including Zambia. Earlier this month, we sat with Cleopatra Muma from the Zambia open Community Schools (ZOCs) and Marlon Phiri from the The Reformed Open Community Schools (ROCS) to understand how they are helping pupils get ready for schooling. For example, ZOCs are currently working with 1,800 community schools in Zambia and have enhanced school enrolment by about 57%. This podcast will help us understand how ZOCS and ROCS are widening education access in Zambia. We discussed the implementation of the School Readiness Initiative (SRI), a key project helping with access to organized learning for some of the most disadvantaged children in Zambia, and what other countries could learn. This week, Vuyisiwe K Mahafu, from our Public Economics and Modelling Practice, travelled to Zambia to present findings from a cost-benefit analysis study. The study, funded by the Roger Federer Foundation for the Zambian Ministry of Education, aims to assess the costs and benefits associated with the implementation of universal Early Childhood Education (ECE) services for children aged 3 to 6 in Zambia. The report launch was attended by the government officials, including the Minister of Education, NGOs and business representatives. The event offered an opportunity for all stakeholders to reflect on the gains made in expanding ECE access in the last two decades, whilst recognising that further investment in ECE services is crucial. Our report puts forward a compelling quantitative, not just moral, case for investing in ECE services in Zambia. We look forward to seeing how the report’s findings will inform budgeting and coordination efforts to improve ECE access for children in Zambia.
