Sight and Life’s work is centered on the belief that when you bring lives and livelihoods together, sustainable change happens. This is why we love to celebrate World Egg Day – an occasion to mark the importance of eggs as the source of essential nutrients and one that helps bring focus on farmers whose livelihoods depend on it. 🥚 Egg Hub is a social business model that SAL has been working on for years. We work with farmers on loans, inputs, training and market linkages to ensure supply and simultaneously work on demand generation to increase consumption patterns. With quality inputs, the Egg Hub poultry farms produce better quality eggs. With increasing demand, they can be affordable and yet be a good, sustainable income for farmers. It’s a solution aimed at tackling both malnutrition and poverty that are inextricably interlinked. Today we take a moment to thank our farmer partners, our entrepreneur partners Lenziemill with whom it all began in Malawi, our teams and, of course, our funding partners for supporting the Egg Hub model. Managing Director of Lenziemill, Andrew Stewart, who operates Egg Hub Malawi, says: “Through the Egg Hub, farmers have sold over six million eggs, reaching over 120,000 people in their communities so far. This not only boosts farmers' profitability but also improves nutrition, as eggs are a vital source of protein, contributing to healthier diets.” Sight and Life will be working on expanding Egg Hubs across LMICs in keeping with our aim to close the nutrition gap across the world. 🌍 #WorldEggDay #UnitedByEggs #EggHub Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) | International Egg Commission

As we mark International Adolescent Health Week #IAHW2024, it’s essential to spotlight adolescent nutrition. We're proud to have contributed to this important discussion as part of the GANN Core Group. In our work, we are constantly reminded of adolescents' ability to advocate, their creativity, and their drive to effect lasting change. They are often forward thinkers, and there’s much we can learn from them! It's so important that adolescents remain at the center of global nutrition efforts, especially with the upcoming N4G Summit. Building on the progress made during the Tokyo meeting, Sight and Life urges governments and donors to make significant commitments through increased funding, robust policies, meaningful indicators, and by addressing critical data gaps for informed decision-making. Adolescents have historically been overlooked in global nutrition, and unfortunately, change has been slow. The N4G Summit is a crucial moment to prioritize their unique nutritional needs, giving adolescent nutrition the visibility it deserves. We need more research, targeted interventions, and cross-sector collaboration to truly invest in adolescent health and their future. The future of the next generation is in the hands of adolescents. 👋🏾 However, in the last 50 years, their health and well-being has seen far less improvement as compared to children. Improved adolescent health can help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has the potential to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and malnutrition and create inclusive societies. There is also compelling evidence that investing in adolescents and their wellbeing strengthens the human capital (accumulated knowledge, skills, and health) of a country. A lack of investment in adolescent health has led to them being referred to as the "forgotten generation". All eyes on #SUNGG and #N4GParis, platforms that can help mainstream adolescent nutrition. In order to establish the appropriate foundation for transformative change among adolescents, a comprehensive set of interventions is necessary. Sight and Life is working on innovative 360-degree solutions for adolescent health. We are seeking to collaborate with funding partners who can back our work on advancing knowledge and science for adolescent nutrition. #IAHW2024 #AdolescentNutrition Sufia Askari | Kesso Gabrielle van Zutphen-Küffer | Brieuc PONT | Arnaud Dupuis | Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) | Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation | Grand Challenges Canada | Stronger Foundations for Nutrition | Fondation Botnar | Emergency Nutrition Network (ENN)

School meals are a great way to ensure children eat eggs. 🥚 How about mixing it in their porridge? 🥣 The NICE* project contributes to the public procurement of 120 eggs per week to the Early Childhood Development Center (ECD) Groupe Scolaire Mushaka, a pilot school in Rusizi city, with hopes of extending the program to other schools in the district. This is accompanied by school meal cooking sessions, with the participation of the program director, accountant, Nutrition Club teacher, ECD caregivers and cooks. Everyone enjoyed the nutritious porridge mixed with eggs, and were grateful for this discovery in bettering healthy diets two weeks ago. School meals are impactful in ensuring children get the essential nutrients they need, supporting their growth, learning, and overall health, especially in communities where access to nutritious food is limited. Eggs are a perfect addition to school meals, packed with various vitamins and minerals. “Children really enjoy it, even those who do not eat eggs have eaten them in the porridge. The Nutrition Club, represented by a teacher, helps caregivers to ensure that the children’s meals are well-prepared and that they are served properly.” -Mukasangwa Juliette, School Accountant “This porridge will help students and young children in the ECD section to grow well physically and mentally, allowing them to excel in school and develop properly in stature, protecting them from malnutrition.” Uwikunda Lucie, Nutrition Club Teacher #NiceNutrition #UrbanNutrition #UnitedByEggs #SchoolMeals *NICE = Nutrition in City Ecosystems Immaculee NABACU | Straton HABUMUGISHA | Elvis Gakuba Nutrition in City Ecosystems | Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute | ETH Zürich World Food System Center, ETH Zurich | Sight and Life | Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation

𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 💪🏾 We were excited to finally meet the girls who could enroll in our clinical trial on heavy periods and low iron stores last week. We held sensitization sessions at the Masongola Boarding school in Zomba, explaining the study spearheaded by Sight and Life’s Director of Science in detail and answering questions from the 15 to 20 year-old students. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝘀? 🩸 This clinical trial is crucial as it explores the impact of reducing heavy menstrual bleeding on iron deficiency and anemia in adolescent girls. Addressing heavy menstrual bleeding can help improve their iron levels, energy, and quality of life—ultimately supporting their education and future health and wellbeing. This year’s International Adolescent Health Week is coming up and the 2024 theme is “Thriving not just surviving: Building adolescents’ resilience” – we are glad to move forward in this project towards exactly that goal. Keep watching this space for updates and findings of our trial. We are keen to work and collaborate for the future of our adolescents! Many thanks to Deputy Head Teacher Kondwawaka H. Saka for the fantastic support she’s given our study from the beginning, and to Gladys Kusiwa for leading the information session for the students. #AdolescentHealth #IAHW2024 #BuildingResilience #FutureOfNutrition Kesso Gabrielle van Zutphen-Küffer | Sufia Askari | Wageningen University & Research | ETH Zürich | Training and Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE) | International Association for Adolescent Health

Empowering communities through nutrition: Meet Aline and her son Moise from Rubavu, Rwanda. When he fell ill due to #malnutrition, Aline sought help at the local health centre. There she got to know the Nutrition in City Ecosystems (NICE) project, through which she learned how to grow vegetables, cook balanced meals, and make healthy choices for her family. Now, Aline is confident her children will never suffer from malnutrition again. The NICE project is making a difference in cities across Rwanda, Kenya, and Bangladesh. It raises awareness about nutrition, promotes sustainable farming, and empowers women and youth in food production and selling. Thanks to multisectoral initiatives like NICE, child stunting rates have dropped from 40% in 2019/20 to 25% as of December 2023 in Rubavu. How can we prevent #aflatoxins? 🌽☠️ Our infographic spells out good agricultural practices that farmers can do on their land. From drying, shelling, threshing, to storing crops – their hard work is preserved, and the community's health is protected. 🛡️ 1️⃣ 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 It all begins with planting. Use quality seeds, maintain good field hygiene, and harvest at maturity to reduce the risk of aflatoxin contamination. 2️⃣ 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 Dry crops immediately after harvest and shell carefully to avoid damage that promotes mold growth. Use a moisture meter to ensure maize is dried to 13.5% before storage. 3️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 Proper storage is crucial to prevent mold growth. Store grains in clean, dry, and well-ventilated spaces, and use airtight containers to block moisture and pests. 4️⃣ 𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 Aflatoxins in animal feed can affect livestock health and reduce productivity. Ensure feed ingredients are properly tested, dried, and stored to minimize contamination. 5️⃣ 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 Aflatoxin contamination can persist during food processing, affecting consumer health. Test and monitor raw materials, follow good manufacturing practices to reduce risks. #FoodSafety #FoodWaste #GoodAgriculturalPractices Daniel Amanquah | Gilbert DUSHIMIMANA | Elvis Gakuba
