🚀 The European Space Agency - ESA is expanding its collaborative efforts with Swiss innovators through the newly established European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre (#ESDI). As part of the ESA Commercialisation Gateway and initiated together with PSI Paul Scherrer Institut, ESDI represents a critical link between ESA’s #space missions and Switzerland’s leading edge in #DeepTech #research. The new offices are located at Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare. 💡 With its first platform, the Phi-Lab, ESDI will concentrate on developments in the areas of quantum and data sciences, along with materials research. By supporting and funding highly ambitious, interdisciplinary projects, ESDI and Phi-Lab aim to bring developments to fruition - for ESA's space research, for the benefit of its Member States, but potentially also for a wide range of industrial sector. "We plan to foster diverse teams that come together from industry, start-ups and academic research," says Jennifer Wadsworth, PhD Wadsworth, head of the Phi-Lab here in the picture with Johann Richard, Head of ESDI. 🌍 Notably, establishing ESDI is a first step for a more permanent presence of ESA in Switzerland, allowing for more direct and sustained collaboration. ESDI is supported by ESA, by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI and the ETH domain. For PSI, this is a continuation of previous fruitful collaborations with ESA, including the development of the high-tech RADEM detector, which is on board ESA's current JUICE mission to Jupiter. 🛰️ Full story (in German): https://lnkd.in/d4A5nrP9

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: 11th Zurich Hardware Meetup We had an inspiring session featuring groundbreaking #DesignTools and #MedTech 🚀 Daniel Bachmann introduced us to spherene™ and its innovative super geometry, leveraging the industry’s only isotropic minimal surface to streamline #3Ddesign. Using both Rhino and Grasshopper, he demonstrated how Spherene allows shapes to adapt seamlessly, reducing #DesignTime with intuitive, autonomous #ShapeGeneration. This flexible tool offers designers faster, smarter workflows for complex forms. Spherene is also seeking collaborators—don’t hesitate to reach out if you're interested! Watch an extended talk online: https://lnkd.in/eYrnTek5 🍬 Dr. Simone Gervasoni captivated us with #CANDYBOTS — sugar-based, magnetically controlled #MicroRobots for #medicalapplications. These biodegradable bots, laser-cut with precision from caramel, can perform minimally invasive tasks within the body. Learn more by diving into the CANDYBOTS research paper. https://lnkd.in/ecHpBzQz Thank you to everyone who joined us. Looking forward to exploring these innovations further at the upcoming #ZurichHardwareMeetup! 📢 #SwissInnovation: Switzerland ranks second in Europe for patents per capita Measured by population, Switzerland holds the second highest number of patent applications in Europe, with 772 applications, following Denmark, with 800 applications. It also ranks in the top three for academic patents per researcher, alongside Denmark and Sweden. 👏 This data comes from a study carried out by the European Patent Office. The findings “clearly show that university research benefits local ecosystems – small and large firms alike – across all European regions”, as António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office, writes in his foreword to this first comprehensive analysis of academic patent applications. 📰 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dWf79AYE #WhySwitzerland Switzerland Innovation Swissnex About Switzerland Swiss Business Hub Nordics swisstech Basel Area Business & Innovation Greater Geneva Bern area (GGBa) Greater Zurich Area St.GallenBodenseeArea Wirtschaftsförderung Luzern Standortförderung Kanton Aargau Standort Promotion in Obwalden

Ein herzliches Dankeschön an alle Speaker, ihr habt den Event zu etwas ganz Besonderem gemacht 🙏: Gabriele Bühler, SBB Immobilien Mike Guyer, Gigon/Guyer Catharina R. HEPHAESTUS, named after the Greek God of fire, metalworking and forging, is the newest bi-liquid rocket engine Focus Project at ARIS!🔥 With the backing of ETH Zürich eight highly committed Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), ETH Zurich engineering students seek to develop a flight-ready ethanol/liquid-oxygen-fed rocket engine by improving upon legacy systems. To enable rapid design iterations and improvements the team will employ additive manufacturing technologies and Agile product development methods. As the 4th generation of bi-liquid rocket engine development at ARIS, the goal is to finally see a reusable pressure-fed system soar to the skies by significantly upscaling the nominal thrust and reducing as much weight as possible. 🚀 Before reaching for the heavens, many system tests will be conducted on the ground on the trailer test stand, which was inherited from project HELIOS and PERSEUS. The first iteration is already well on the way and the engine team has been busy designing a rocket nozzle, which uses regenerative and film cooling to manage the high thermal loads. 🧊 Moreover, a pintle injector has been in the works, which is particularly suitable for stable combustion and allows for a modular design appropriate for iterative prototyping. Meanwhile the propellant supply system (PSS) team has defined requirements for fuel and oxidizer flight valves. These design requirements differ from the current valves as they have thus far remained on the ground. Next steps include coming up with ways to modify existing off-the-shelf valves to make them compatible with cryogenics. ❄️ This is particularly crucial for safe operation for both the test stand as well as the rocket. Last but not least, the data acquisition & control systems (DACS) team has inventoried all existing sensors that have been inherited from previous projects. Additionally, these sensors have been prepared for recalibration. Upcoming tasks include the installation of additional environment sensors and the development of a new mission control software. 👨🏻💻 Stay tuned for more progress updates as project HEPHAESTUS pushes the boundaries of bi-liquid engine development. 💧📈 #ProjectHEPHAESTUS #hephaestus #ARIS #RocketScience #Biliquid #regeneratively #cooled #Cryogenic #ethalox #Pintle #Injector #ETHZurich #engineering ETH Hangar Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich
