Two new treatment centers, designed for rapid deployment to provide safe care from the onset of an outbreak, were tested. For the first time, the entire center operated on solar power, showcasing a future emergency healthcare system which is less harmful to the environment. 5 years ago, on 11 March 2020, the WHO Director General Dr Tedros for the first time said that the COVID-19 epidemic was now a pandemic. This decision was taken based on the escalating situation and some countries’ inaction. At that time, WHO had already been in full response mode since the news of a new virus emerged on 31 December 2019. Dr Tedros declared a public health emergency of international concern—our highest level of alarm—on 30 January 2020. Before describing it as a pandemic, WHO 🔷 said that the COVID-19 virus had pandemic potential. 🔷 warned of the potential for the epidemic to become a pandemic. 🔷 said the window of opportunity to stop it from becoming one was closing. But most importantly, WHO was sharing the tools countries needed to try to control the virus while preparing their health systems for more people to be sick.
