🌳 The success of the latest EU regulatory measures for sustainable supply chains (#EUGreenDeal, #EUDR, #CBAM & #CSDDD) depends on the EU’s cooperation with trade partner countries. 🌍 🤝 This is why in July, our colleagues Elizabeth Tamayo Tabares, Louise Simon and Luan Santos, PhD were in Cairo to present at a 2-day workshop on sustainable supply chains, together with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), with the support of the German Development Cooperation(giz). The event gathered stakeholders from different countries of the UfM region. ➡ We take away three core learnings from our exchanges in Cairo: 💡 Transitioning to sustainable supply chains is challenging. However overcoming these challenges will unlock many economic, environmental and social opportunities for companies of all sizes in partner countries. They increase companies’ #competitiveness by providing a blueprint to act now and be ahead of the curve. 💡 Cross-country and interinstitutional cooperation will be at the core of making the transition to sustainable supply chain work. There is much room to learn from one another, share best practices and work towards change together. 💡 We cannot leave anyone behind. To transition to sustainable supply chains, we must support those that need it the most. Smallholders, local communities and #SMEs need dedicated capacity-building and financial support. This event was yet another occasion for countries of the UfM region to meet and exchange about their most pressing issues regarding the sustainability transition. It helps to raise awareness about EU regulatory measures and facilitate international cooperation across sectors and countries with different characteristics. 💪 We thank the UfM and GIZ for this collaboration and for facilitating these new encounters. And we thank all participants for their attention, their valuable questions and their inputs. We will look forward to more of these occasions! ❓ ⬇ What challenges or opportunities do you see in the transition towards #sustainablesupplychains? 📃 With the entry into force of the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR) in June 2023 (and the 18-month grace period on implementation approaching fast), it is natural that businesses in countries that export to the #EU would be interested to know how they will be affected. 🗣 With this in mind, our analysts Paula Pinto Zambrano and Sofia Helena Zanella Carra took part in a session organised by the Agri-Food Systems Sector Chamber of the Conselho Empresarial Brasileiro para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (Cebds). They presented the EU Deforestation Regulation, detailing its main objectives, scope, requirements, and timeline, as well as the key challenges and opportunities for #Brazil. 💡 They also highlighted the progress Brazil has made in terms of #compliance tools and presented some EU programmes that aim to support producing countries in complying with the #regulation, such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH SAFE project (see here: https://lnkd.in/eurYcV4G) where Climate & Company has been working on greening #finance (more details here: https://lnkd.in/dCxpYbd3). 💶 Finance is an important cross-cutting topic, especially for supporting #smallholders in promoting the #transition to #deforestation-free supply chains. This event was a key step on our work on enhancing cooperation between the EU and Brazil for effectively reducing supply-chain driven deforestation as part of our Sustainable Finance Instruments for Sustainable Land Use Project (see here: https://lnkd.in/e6TbXfMM), financed by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. We want to thank CEBDS and Carla Gheler-Costa for the invitation. It is always great to collaborate with CEBDS! #sustainablefinance #supplychains #sustainability

🌳 Deforestation Due Diligence is challenging for financial institutions - how can we make their life easier? The problem is not the data - all the data that financial institutions need to identify deforestation in their portfolios is out there. So far, it was just very resource-intensive for financial institutions to use this data. 👉To respond to this challenge, we sat together with our partners Andra AP-fonden (AP2) and Global Canopy to create a step-by-step guide that makes life easier for financial institutions to use the data available. 💡Our new guide includes - a practical step-by-step approach to make deforestation-related data actionable and due diligence more efficient for financial institutions - an online code repository with an open-source dataset that financial institutions can use and adapt based on their portfolio 🌍 Just three months ahead of the UN Biodiversity Conference COP16, this is the guide for financial institutions to make sustainable finance work in practice. ➡ Have a look at our press release: https://lnkd.in/eYQQfspK ➡ Download the full guide for financial institutions here: https://lnkd.in/eGu3WGQw ➡ The open-source online code repository on GitHub is here: https://lnkd.in/ef5rJfAP 👉Intrigued? This summer, we will host free online workshops to walk you and your institution through the methodology to tackle deforestation due diligence. ✍️Please reach out to our Senior Analyst Malte Hessenius and schedule your session. New White Paper! 📄 We need to direct more financial flows into companies that are becoming green. The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (#SFDR) can be one of the key instruments to do so by providing a clear framework for labeling transition products and integrating 'transition' more systematically into finance. To inform the review process of the SFDR, we have released our white paper: "Transition Products: Conceptual Clarity & Implementation Guidance," jointly written by Climate & Company (Malte Hessenius, Raphael Tietmeyer and Mayla Wünsche) and Eric Prüßner from Advanced Impact Research GmbH. 🌍📊 📈 What’s Inside? Dive deep into the "transition product" category in public equity markets and explore: 🔹 Key characteristics and potential criteria for transition products 🔹 Practical implementation guidance (illustrated using a global universe of listed companies) 🔹 Evidence-based feedback for regulators to set minimum criteria for financial products This report is part of broader discussions on regulatory efforts in the EU, UK, and beyond to categorise financial products with sustainability characteristics. It also aligns well with the recent publication by the three European Supervisory Authorities (European Banking Authority (EBA), European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)) and their joint opinion on the assessment of the SFDR. 🌿 Why Transition Products Matter? Economic activities that are transitioning to become green need better financing conditions. This lies at the heart of the frequently discussed term “transition finance.” The ‘transition financial product category’ has already been implemented by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority and is also under discussion in the EU’s SFDR framework. The key question revolves around the design characteristics and potential minimum criteria that act as entry points. This is a particularly important topic for the EU and its new Commission. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gFqPEmSy #SustainableFinance #TransitionProducts #ClimateAction #FinancialMarkets #ESG
