♟️PASS THE GAMES ♟️ 🎲 This week, our #PASS24 participants took part in a dynamic and interactive game-based exercise in strategic thinking. 🎲This immersive experience had participants assume the roles of fictitious nations, engaging in decision-making on missile building, strategic defense, and diplomacy. The goal was to navigate the delicate balance between national security and avoiding the pitfalls of an escalating arms race. 🎲 Through a series of rounds, participants faced the security dilemma, a critical concept in international relations. Emissaries were sent, negotiations were made, and strategies were tested. “All is not quiet on the Western front” – Dr. Yevgeniya Gaber 🌍Yesterday, Dr. Gaber, Professor of National Security Studies at the Regional Security Studies Department at #GCMC, provided a comprehensive analysis of #Russia’s war on #Ukraine and its far-reaching impact on the Rules-Based International Order (RBIO). She highlighted that it is not just a regional war but a system-transforming conflict that could reshape the global order. The stakes are high—either the international community works to strengthen the RBIO, or the world could regress into disorder. 🔇Dr. Gaber provided a detailed overview of Russian aggression in the Black Sea region, not limited to #Ukraine but also affecting other countries (e.g. Georgia and Moldova). She described the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 as the culmination of years of disinformation campaigns, propaganda, and political interference orchestrated by Russia to destabilize the region. In this war, everything is weaponized - from food and energy to the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure, resulting in war crimes and widespread suffering. 🚨The ensuing panel discussed the evolving nature of modern warfare, emphasizing the increasing use of hybrid tactics like cyberattacks and disinformation that blur the lines between peace and conflict. Russia's hybrid operations on NATO territory and the challenges they pose to global security were also examined, highlighting the urgent need for stronger enforcement and deterrence mechanisms within international agreements. 🚢Maritime security and the law of the sea were central themes, given the strategic importance of the #BlackSea. Dr. Gaber also reflected on the future of international law, the #UnitedNations, #EU, #NATO, and global security, stressing that the international community must adapt if it is to effectively counter these modern threats. 🗣️As she powerfully concluded: “If there is no justice, we will not be able to establish long term peace and security and stop the deaths and sufferings”. ♟️PASS THE REGIONAL PERSPECTIVE♟️ 🌍 This week, our #PASS24 flagship course featured a panel on “Regional Perspectives: South Asia and the Middle East” that brought together leading experts to explore the relevance of the Rules Based International Order (RBIO) in these crucial regions. 🏫 Dr. Pal Sidhu, Professor at The Center for Global Affairs at New York University provided historical context on India’s shifting role in global affairs. He noted that in the pre-colonial era, #India and #China accounted for over 50% of the world’s gross domestic product (GPD), a dominance that faded during the colonial period. 🇮🇳Today, India faces significant regional challenges, particularly in its relationships with #Pakistan and China including ongoing territorial disputes and China’s support for Pakistan’s nuclear program which continue to strain India-China relations. 🌍Ms. Sara Bazoobandi from the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) turned the focus to the Middle East, emphasizing the region’s diversity in approaches to the RBIO. 🌍Bazoobandi addressed the region’s economic disparity, with wealthy Gulf nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE contrasting sharply with struggling countries such as Syria and Yemen. The different political systems across the region play a critical role in shaping responses to the RBIO, with ideology acting as a powerful tool in defining national and regional identities. 🌍The panel offered a rich exploration of the geopolitical dynamics shaping both South Asia and the Middle East, highlighting the diverse perspectives on the RBIO in these regions. ----
