The "Sociotechnical Foundations of GeoAI and Spatial Data Science" specialist meeting attracted a high number of applications, demonstrating the significant interest in this field. Unfortunately, due to limitations, we could only invite a selected group of participants. The meeting covered key themes such as #Trust, #Explainability, #Reproducibility, #Bias, #Sustainability, and #Accountability, focusing on both challenges and potential solutions. Attendees also enjoyed two social activities at Kapuzinergruft and Nussberg, providing opportunities for discovering the history of Austria and relaxation in scenic locations. A heartfelt thank you goes to Krzysztof Janowicz and our wonderful organizing team ( Ivan Majic, PhD, Zilong Liu, Meilin Shi, Alexandra Fortacz, and Daneila Wölfle) for the dedication, as well as to all participants for their active involvement. Our gratitude also goes to the sponsors—Esri, the American Association of Geographers (#AAG), and the University of Vienna—whose support was crucial for the success of the event. We look forward to continuing this event as a platform for collaboration, hoping that the #GeoAI community will make significant strides in addressing the challenges facing the field. #Talk #SDSS #SpecialistMeeting #GeoAI #GeoAICommunity #GIScience #GIS #SpatialDataScience #Vienna Song Gao Ben Adams Yingjie Hu Rui Zhu Zhangyu Wang Mark Gahegan Rachel Franklin Alexander Zipf Martin Tomko Anthony Robinson Carsten Keßler Shih-Lung Shaw Bruno Martins Christophe Claramunt Lauren Bennett Sarah Battersby Anita Graser 🌻 Alina Ristea Vanessa Brum-Bastos Adela Sobotkova Nico Van de Weghe Haosheng Huang Ilya Zaslavsky Eun-Kyeong Kim Marcela Suárez Meiliu Wu Negar Alinaghi Qunying Huang Rami Alouta Renee Sieber Stef De Sabbata Manuel Kastner

🚶♀️HeiGIT at #Walk21Portugal🚶 Recently, our colleague Kirsten v. Elverfeldt attended the Walk21 Conference in Lisbon, an inspiring event dedicated to reimagining cities by transforming car-centered spaces into active, livable, and vibrant environments for people. How do we create cities that are both livable and #climate-resilient? At HeiGIT, we believe in a tailored approach, integrating climate mitigation into urban mobility projects. Kirsten presented our ongoing work on a globally accessible, locally adaptable #walkability index built with open data like #OpenStreetMap (#OSM). This index enables planners to incorporate walkability into designs, calculating accessibility to essential services within a "walkable 15-minute city." We are already thinking ahead on how these results can contribute to #ClimateActionIndicators and guide us in taking the right steps to reduce #GHG #emissions from #traffic. Your feedback matters! We invite you to review our preprint and provide valuable feedback to refine and advance our approach: https://lnkd.in/dGq59Gju 📑
Do you wonder how one could estimate vehicle velocity globally 🌍 ? We at HeiGIT are trying to answer this question by combining remote sensing imagery with a decent portion of deep learning. The first milestone achieved is a preprint that you can read and review to help us improve our work and ideas: https://lnkd.in/dGq59Gju 📑 The next step, a fully functioning app, is just behind the corner! Many thanks to Yulia Grinblat, PhD, Julian Psotta, Nir Fulman, Himshikhar Mazumdar, Shiyu Tang, and Alexander Zipf for your cooperation and Planet for access to your incredible imagery! ML + Geography = 💚 #deeplearning #traffic #velocity #preprint #geography

As HeiGIT we successfully held our first in-person workshop to integrate local expert knowledge and diverse perspectives of practitioners and key stakeholders into our riverine flood risk assessment for the Indus River Basin in the context of Anticipatory Action. Local insights, discussions and exchange resulted in a prioritization and weighting of indicators which enables us to deliver a reflected, locally validated and hopefully impactful risk assessment for the Early Action Protocol. Thank you to this highly competent & motivated group, we have learned alot!!
To gain local expert insights and assess the significance of flood risk in the Indus River basin, the Pakistan Red Crescent, in collaboration with the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz and HeiGIT, organized a two-day Flood Risk Assessment Workshop in Islamabad, Pakistan. The workshop facilitated valuable discussions and the exchange of knowledge among 35 participants, including practitioners from PRCS NHQ, PRCS Provincial Chapters, ICRC, NorCross, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Pakistan, PDMA, Federal Flood Commission, Provincial Irrigation Departments, World Food Programme, and Welthungerhilfe (WHH). The insights gathered will help in developing the PRCS Riverine Flood Early Action Protocol for Indus River. #AnticipatoryAction #DisasterPreparedness #Resilience #EWEA #AnticipationHub #ForecastbasedFinancing
