MapAction enables 80+ expert geospatial and data professionals to donate their professional skills and expertise to humanitarian agencies of all sizes from the UN on down, including crisis response. The volunteer capability is reinforced by a small team of standby and permanent staff. Maps help everyone in an emergency response to mitigate a given humanitarian priority and take the best possible relief actions. This helps answer key questions in an earthquake or a cyclone, like: Which roads are blocked? What does the weather forecast look like? Where should shelters be established? For 20 years, in 140 emergency deployments and 80 countries - and hundreds more training events with partners worldwide - MapAction has provided disaster relief agencies, governments and grassroots organisations with maps, data-driven tools and solutions to ensure decisions about resources like food, water and housing are fairly and efficiently made. This year, MapAction completed the 18th edition of #MapEx, our annual disaster simulation response exercise for MapAction's humanitarian geospatial and data volunteers, as well as staff, operational partners, international institutional observers and stakeholders. The annual simulation reinforces preparedness, strengthens sharing of best practices and innovation and facilitates global humanitarian data networks. The MapEx event continues to scale year-on-year: this year, for the first time, MapEx featured #anticipatoryaction components. Last month, MapAction's work with UNICEF and CartONG continued in #Guinea as part of the #ReachTheUnreached project, which aims to identify areas with high rates of unvaccinated children in six Central and West African countries to reinforce life-saving immunisation campaigns. MapAction staff met with key government and health sector stakeholders to get a better overview of the challenges, before conducting a workshop on potential GIS solutions for vaccination and birth registration. Participants identified useful GIS products, such as dashboards for tracking vaccination coverage and human resources. They organised the challenges to both birth registration and vaccination into the following themes: data and information management, human resources, awareness raising, accessibility, technology and policy and financial resources. This work is conducted in partnership with CartONG and funded by UNICEF. #humanlypossible #GIS4Good #data4good #data4health #Africa

In November 2023, MapAction began to co-build a risk model for the Eswatini National Disaster Management Agency, together with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and German overseas development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. The model used 87 indicators based on 49 #data sets and is designed to help the NDMA to mitigate and plan for future hazards such as droughts, floods and health epidemics. A MapAction team was in #Eswatini this month to follow-up the model's integration into the disaster management agency.
