🌈 Pride on The Hill🌈 🗓 16th July 2024 For the first time, GFZ, RIFS, PIK, and AWI came together to give visibility to the LGBTQIA+ community. Highlights of the event included a vibrant community engagement and a thought-provoking panel discussion on critical topics. 🔬 Career Advancement in Science and barriers for LGBTQIA+ individuals by Dr. Jobst Heitzig from PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research 🔧 Career Advancement in STEM: Challenges and opportunities for transgender individuals by M. Sc. Rey Mourot from GFZ 🏛️ Institutional and Organizational Changes: Political agenda for change and creation of a culture of inclusion. By Dr. Marlene Gomez from GFZ 🤝 Understanding the role of allies and contestation of knowledge production. By Dr. Cecilia Oliveira from Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS) With these first steps, we hope to create a safe space for our LGBTQIA+ staff to feel empowered and supported to be their authentic selves. 💗 Thank you to all who participated and supported this event, organized in collaboration with Out on the Berg* and the diversity coordinator at GFZ-RIFS. *“Out on the Berg" is an informal support group organised across the three Telegrafenberg Institutes (GFZ-RIFS, AWI, and PIK) to support LGBTQIA+ staff and improve their on-campus visibility. #DiversityAndInclusion #PrideMonth #LGBTQIA #STEM #Allyship #CareerAdvancement #PoliticalAgenda #Pride #GFZ #RIFS #AWI #PIK #ERG #GrasrootsOrganizations #DEI

#Congrats #DoctoralDefense #NewDoctorAlert 🎉Congrats to Sophie Lagarde on her successful Doctoral Thesis Defense. Sophie did her thesis at the GFZ in section 4.6 with Prof. Niels Hovius and Dr. Jens Turowski. During her PhD thesis, she used seismic signal to increase our knowledge on the natural processes happening on the Earth surface. Specifically, Sophie looks at slope failures and river processes. She found out that the triggering factor for slope failure can be driven by the total crack length boundary, an internal parameter not considered previously, and that it is possible to retrieve river bedload flux and water depth using seismic signal. These studies show that environmental seismology is suitable for natural processes real time monitoring and thus show its potential to be applied in early warning systems, whose aim is to mitigate the impact of natural hazards on human societies. You can read more about their work here: https://lnkd.in/eCGBm7xr https://lnkd.in/ebYfQjjy Enjoy your new title, Dr. Lagarde 🎓 !

🌟 GFZ Research Highlights 🌟 How climate change is altering the Earth's rotation #dynamic_Earth #climate_change The Earth's spin axis is not constant. It moves slowly over time relative to the Earth's crust. This is caused by various processes on the surface and inside the Earth, such as the melting of ice masses or the uplift of land masses, as well as mass shifts in the Earth's viscous mantle and core. Researchers from an international team from Switzerland, the USA and Germany, led by ETH Zürich and with the participation of the Helmholtz-Centre Potsdam - German Research Centre GFZ, have been able to fully explain the various causes of long-term polar movement for the first time in the most comprehensive modelling to date using AI methods. One focus was on the influences of the melting of large ice masses due to climate change. It is particularly noteworthy that climate change also has an influence on processes in the Earth's interior via the change in the Earth's spin. The study has been published in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience: https://lnkd.in/g8wiV7pW

We are pleased to announce the NEW CALL open for the GFZ Discovery Fellowships 2024. https://lnkd.in/e9jBkwbb We look forward to your application! The deadline for all applications is Monday, September 23, 2024.
Earlier this year, I was honored to be awarded the GFZ Discovery Fellowship, which gave me the chance to dive into research on a topic close to my heart. Inspired by the amazing work happening at the Animal Vibration Lab at Oxford, I decided to explore how seismic sensors could help protect wildlife. It's been an incredible journey so far, and I'm grateful for the chance to follow that passion. If you're curious to learn more about what I'm up to, Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam - Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ recently shared a press release about my project. You can check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eTGvFhAW And hey, if you're thinking about pursuing your own research adventure, keep an eye out for the new fellowship calls opening soon. It's a fantastic opportunity to dive into all sorts of earth science topics in a super welcoming and collaborative environment.

🌟Celebrate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion 🌟 🌍 At GFZ and RIFS we are committed to recognize the power of diversity, foster equitable opportunities, and place inclusion at the core of our strength. Our primary goal is to make the centre and geosciences a safe space for everyone, where diverse voices are heard, valued, and actively included, both in the administration and in the scientific process. We believe this approach will enhance our understanding of the Earth, strengthen our relationships with it and each among us, and foster innovative research outcomes that embrace diverse perspectives. 🌀 At GFZ and RIFS we acknowledge the challenges that minorities and underrepresented groups encounter when entering academia, seeking representation, and advancing in their careers. To address this, we embarked on a focused DEI journey on March 1st to review our recruiting process and ensure its sensitivity to DEI into every phase of the process. Our goal is to apply an intersectional/holistic approach to achieve equitable opportunities and sustain them. 💼 We are moving step by step and understand DEI as a cross-functional, transversal strategy that crafts resources to foster a robust DEI culture. As the Helmholtz Association promotes an atmosphere of respect and fairness, appreciation and belonging, security and openness in its research centers, it also funds Diversity projects like ours to achieve these goals. The GFZ signed and supports the Charta der Vielfalt e.V. since 2021. 🛡️What does it mean for you to have a geoscience centre as a safe space for everyone? Let us know in the comments! #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #DEI #WorkplaceCulture #Belonging #DiversityDay #ChartaDerVielfalt #StimmeFürVielfalt #Zugehörigkeit #Geo #Geoscience

We have now started expanding our downhile earthquake observatory GONAF in the Istanbul-Marmara region in Türkiye. The first step is a borehole on the Kapidag Peninsula in the southwestern Sea of Marmara. It will be one of the most densely equipped boreholes ever, with the latest borehole broadband sensors, strainmeters with 10*-12m accuracy, dilatometers and pore pressure gauges. Conventional borehole seismometers are also on board. The aim is to now also monitor the western portion of the Main Marmara Fault as part of the North Anatolian Fault Zone with high precision, and to develop a new forecast-based earthquake warning system for the Istanbul area. More soon at www.gonaf-network.org !
