Ciao, Milano! The International Astronautical Congress is always an intensely fulfilling experience, but this year in Milan, we were treated to rich risotto and even richer discussions. Our congratulations and thanks to the International Astronautical Federation! We’ll dive deeper into these highlights in the coming weeks, but here’s a quick taste of what made #IAC2024 unforgettable: ✨ Karman Futures Gala: We gathered 150 senior delegates from the international space community for our Annual Karman Futures Gala at the stunning Palazzo Visconti, where bold ideas for the next big cooperative space project were envisioned and shared. 🏆 IAF Excellence in Diversity Award: We were deeply honoured to receive the annual IAF Excellence in Diversity Award, celebrated at a special luncheon presided over by Clay Mowry, President of the IAF, and Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency. Thank you for this recognition of our community's global efforts. 🌍 Astra Carta Advisory Council: Our Managing Director, Hannah Ashford, participated in the inaugural Astra Carta Advisory Council meeting, a key initiative driving King Charles III’s Sustainable Markets Initiative forward. 🍝 Karman Fellowship Summit: We hosted the inaugural Karman Fellowship Summit, uniting Fellows from five cohorts and 17 (!!) countries. We became chefs for the morning - lots of pasta was made and consumed. 🏛 Future of Space Workshop at Bocconi House: We co-hosted a Future of Space Workshop with SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen (German Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation) at the historic W Executive offices in Bocconi House. SPRIND is redefining innovation, and our Fellows pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in space technologies. Stay tuned as we work with SPRIND to develop a multi-year Space Challenge! 🌙 Lunar Registry Workshop: Together with Open Lunar Foundation and the Astra Carta, we dove into the complexities of transparency in future lunar activities at our co-hosted Lunar Registry Workshop. 👩🚀 Axiom Space x Prada Collaboration: We witnessed the exciting reveal of Axiom Space’s new spacesuit, designed in collaboration with Prada. A big step forward in making space more accessible - and stylish! 🤝 New Partnerships: We’re thrilled to welcome new sponsors and partners who are helping us drive forward our mission. Special thanks to EnduroSat, SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen, and W Executive for your invaluable support. More insights to come soon, but for now - grazie, Milano! 🇮🇹

COUNTDOWN #1 🚀 In just over one week, the Karman Fellows of 2024 will come together in Bulgaria alongside our hosts from EnduroSat for a transformative week of collaboration and future-focused dialogue. Each year, we design the program with two key pillars in mind - #FutureofSpace, and #GiveBack to our regional hosts. So what's in store for our Future of Space programming? Firstly, we will see the launch of an exciting new format: Karman Scenarios Planning. Led by Taskeen Ali, a Futures Economist with deep expertise in global markets and geopolitics (and a friend of our foundation from the Oxford Space Initiative), this format aims to anticipate key trends and challenges for the space sector through 2050. We’ve already conducted 20 in-depth interviews with our Karman Fellows and Pioneers, leveraging their diverse perspectives to understand where our sector is heading. We'll be exploring these insights, workshopping some plausible scenarios and sharing the outcomes - stay tuned 🤓 Secondly, we'll be hosting a Fellows-led Chatham House Workshop. Our Fellows will moderate the topics they believe are in need of robust discussion and input - in a safe forum designed for free and open dialogue. We’re also proud to host Jean-Jacques Dordain, former ESA Director General, who will inspire our Fellows with a keynote on the importance of international cooperation amidst geopolitical tensions. Stay tuned as we continue the countdown to Karman Fellowship Week 2024 - where the future of space takes shape. 🌟 #KarmanFellowshipWeek #FutureOfSpace #KarmanScenariosPlanning #SpaceLeadership #EnduroSat #Bulgaria

This is exactly what The Karman Project is about - inspiring global space leaders to come together across borders to proactively address the opportunities and challenges they are passionate about, with their knowledge, networks and resources. During Karman Week 2024, Emma Gatti (Editor-in-Chief at SpaceWatch.Global) dreamed up a new idea for positive communication about the critical role that space technologies serve for communities around the Earth. She felt that the Global South was underrepresented in storytelling - and teamed up with Mani Thiru, who has supported from some of the most innovative #spacetech companies within the Asia-Pacific and beyond. Check out their new podcast - #SpaceForGood - below. Episode 1 features Divya Sharma from SatSure - a company that was co-founded by Karman Fellow Prateep Basu ✨ Worlds colliding!

I'm thrilled to partner with my friend Emma Gatti on something new we dreamed up after our inspired get together in the Maldives last year, thanks to The Karman Project. Welcome to Space For Good, the podcast that explores how cutting-edge #space science can help humanity thrive, support the environment, and foster fairer wealth distribution. We delve into how #technology can drive a new economic system centered on community, environment, and real world needs. Emma is a planetary scientist and geologist with a PhD from the University of Cambridge and two post-docs from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech. If you're a space aficionado, you may have seen her a few times this year on the BBC! She's currently Editor in Chief SpaceWatch.Global. In each episode, I'll be offering my views on space tech's impact for the global south, while teasing out the thought processes behind novel innovations as well learning more about the #entrepreneurs pioneering change. If you're interested in sharing your story (especially if you're from the global south community), please reach out - we'd love to have you on our show. In this first episode, we get chatting with Divya Sharma Vice-president AI/Ml at SatSure on fighting poverty with #satellite intelligence that supports farmers in #India with financing. "Ordinary people doing extraordinary things" ✨ Last month, we had the honour of hosting a remarkable session with James Keyes, former CEO of 7-Eleven, Inc. and Blockbuster, Inc., as part of our Karman Fellowship's Leadership Series. Jim shared invaluable insights from his illustrious career, touching on his humble beginnings, his passion for education, and his deep love for the space sector as a child of the Apollo era. Key takeaways included: 1. Knowledge and Preparation as the Antidote to Fear: For leaders, overcoming fear is a personal journey that begins with being well-informed and prepared. Jim underscored the importance of dedicating time to understand the complexities of our world, especially in times of uncertainty and geopolitical tension. 2. Simplicity in Leadership: Jim encouraged our Fellows to focus on reducing complexity in their leadership roles. By simplifying challenges and communicating effectively, leaders can guide their teams with clarity and purpose, making it easier to navigate overwhelming situations. 3. Relentless Positivity and Openness: Every individual has the potential to lead meaningful change, an idea we champion at The Karman Project. In addition to his inspiring leadership insights, Jim has recently authored a book titled 'Education is Freedom: The Future Is in Your Hands', where he delves deeper into his philosophies on education and empowerment. We highly recommend this read!! Many of our Fellows are now planning to connect with Jim during his global travels for his book tour, and we look forward to seeing these relationships flourish. 🌟 Thank you again, Jim, for sharing your time and your wisdom with our community. 👉 Read more about the session here: https://lnkd.in/gmCq_gnn 👉 Check out James' book here: https://lnkd.in/g4y8Nyr7 #Leadership #SpaceSector #TheKarmanProject #Fellowship #SpaceforGood

'Yandiwanba,' a word from the Yagarabul language meaning 'from the ground to a higher place,' was gifted by Elder Aunty Kerry Charlton to the QUT Centre for Robotics as the name for their new lunar test bed. This beautiful exchange, shared at QUT Aerospace Society's Industry Night by Thierry Peynot, is a profound reminder of the deep wisdom and knowledge we can learn from our First Nations Elders. In our pursuit of innovation and exploration, let's remember the importance of grounding progress in the rich heritage and teachings of those who have walked this land for millennia. We also had the privilege to hear from industry leaders from Boeing, Southern Launch, Southern Cross Space and CSIRO. I was invited to deliver the keynote address (always terrified when speaking to audiences of engineers, but they were very kind!) and focused upon the role of the private sector in addressing our most time-critical challenges on Earth and in space. This is a big part of the work we lead at The Karman Project, and it is incumbent upon all who work with space technologies to be cognisant of their impact - good and bad. Thanks for welcoming me, Jaidan Rommel Griffin, Kieran Wagstaff, Andrew Close and team.

Really special to have been invited by UQ Law School and Herbert Smith Freehills to speak at the annual Women in Law event this Thursday. Here I am in my parents' kitchen on graduation night 11 years ago, having no idea that I'd move from McInnes Wilson Lawyers to Berlin and then to the international space sector. The foundational learnings in law have been invaluable, and it's a real honour to be invited alongside such esteemed alumni from The University of Queensland who are doing brilliant work across the bar, private practice, and the pro bono arena. If you're in Brisbane and would like to join, you can register here: https://lnkd.in/gEXTETXU
