Sustainability And Resilience for Infrastructure and Logistics networks

Info

SARIL aims to complement the classic definition of resilience, which focuses on threat prevention, robustness and system recovery, by green aspects. Key performance indicators will be defined which quantify both, the system resistance against disruptions as well as the environmental burden of freight transport in close collaboration with a large stakeholder group. Adopting three different scenarios on different geographical scales (regional, national and international/EU), models will be developed which are able to capture the unperturbed system operation as well as the behavior in case of a disruptions. Funded by the European Union under grant agreement ID 101103978.

When Oscarsborg soldiers 🪖🇳🇴 sank the German warship Blücher in 1940, it was probably a significant disruption⚡on the sea route 🌊 to Oslo. Is that the reason why we spent here the last few days with our friends from the SARIL Project consortium 👥? 😉 In SARIL we are working on sustainable and disruption-resistant logistics networks. 🚛🚢🚂 We have already asked some of you about disruption 📃, and we met to talk about the results of interviews, and about further work. Soon we will also invite you to face to face workshops 🤝 In different parts of Europe 🗺️ Thank you Jan Tore Pedersen for the invitation to an absolutely extraordinary region of the world in the middle of the fjords. 🏞️😍 🇳🇴 Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴! 🚧 While northern Europe suffers from heavy and sudden snowfalls, in the south it is more and more difficult to predict fires, floods and other extreme weather events, and because they are stronger, mitigation is not as effective as it used to be. 🔥 SARIL has a scenario case focused on natural hazards, such as fires. The results of this scenario, along with those of the other two, will result a comprehensive sustainable resilience analysis that will help the project develop a toolkit to achieve sustanaible and resilient logistics networks, mitigating the effects of these events on supply chains. 🌐Collaboration with sister project ReMuNet Project is the way to achieve the objectives by containing all possible types of disruptions, stakeholders and solutions. #Transport #Sustainability #SustainableLogistics #Disruptions #ExtremeWeather #NaturalHazards

⚠ Helsinki experienced an unprecedented late snowfall, blanketing the region and causing #disruptions in transportation. With Helsinki seeing its heaviest snowfall in over 50 years, both roads and rails are severely affected. The Finnish Meteorological Institute issues warnings for poor driving conditions due to blowing snow and freezing rain. ⚠ Helsinki's tram network shuts down due to icy power lines and track blockages, leading to significant #delays and #cancellations in public transportation services. ⚠ Cities like Turku also face disruptions, with numerous bus services cancelled. 💡 ReMuNet collaborates with the Finnish Meteorological Institute to conduct root cause and impact analyses of disruptive events. Leveraging high-resolution climate models and incident analyses, we integrate these insights into transport planning. This approach addresses the historical reactivity of transport planning, which often struggles with timely and accurate predictions. By enhancing our predictive capabilities, we aim to foster better EU-wide resilience to disruptive events!

🌟 Exciting Times at #TRA2024!   We are delighted to share our experience from last week's Transport Research Arena (TRA) 2024, where over 4,000 participants from 50 countries came together to shape the future of transport. The event was a melting pot of ideas and innovation, and the SARIL project was right at the heart of it. The SARIL project had its stand in the ALICE, Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ETP LOGISTICS) Village, a shared and collaborative space for innovative logistics projects. Interacting with other exhibitors not only enriched our understanding but also opened up new avenues for cooperation and development. Many thanks to Astrid Bjørgen, Marianne Ryghaug, Miltiadis Kontogeorgos, Noemi Jimenez-Redondo, Paula Lopez, Jose Solís Hernández, Pablo Segura Yus and ReMuNet Project partners John von Stamm, Janis Simons, Marcel Huschebeck, Florian Krietsch for the great discussions and exchange of the ideas. A particular highlight was our engaging dialogue with ReMuNet Project on future collaboration possibilities. These discussions underline the potential for impactful partnerships that could significantly advance our collective objectives. Throughout the event, the SARIL stand served as a meeting point for SARIL partners. These informal exchanges were crucial in enhancing our collective approach and creating strong links between partners. TRA 2024 was an excellent opportunity to network and promote the objectives of the SARIL project. The event allowed us to connect with industry peers, thought leaders, and potential collaborators, fostering relationships that we believe will lead to fruitful outcomes.   #TransportInnovation #SustainableLogistics #InnovationinLogistics #innovation #Resilience

There is an interesting editorial in today’s Guardian about supply chain risk and resilience, prompted by US concern about Chinese involvement in its ports. It ends with a cryptic comment about countries needing to ‘logistics-proof potential wars’. This is the first time that I’ve come across the term ‘logistics-proof’ and I’m intrigued by its meaning. Water-proofing keeps out the rain. Climate-proofing protects against extreme weather. Logistics-proofing presumably guards against disruptions to the flow of freight. Applying the term in a military context surely under-estimates the fundamental role that logistics plays in wartime and the tactical efforts of combatants to deliberately breach each other’s supply lines. A logistics-proofed war is clearly a fantasy, but reducing the vulnerability of commercial logistics systems and infrastructure to potential military conflicts would seem a sensible precaution.    https://bit.ly/4c9r6y1 #logistics #supplychain #resilience #military
