Info

Transsolar KlimaEngineering is a diverse team of engineers focused on creating climate-responsive built environments. We collaborate with our clients and partners to enhance the human experience while minimizing resource use following our self-declared attitude: High Comfort, Low Impact. In partnership with the world’s leading architects our unique approach has led to numerous breakthrough projects including Manitoba Hydro Place, which in 2012 became the most energy efficient office tower in North America. Our collaborative style has earned our projects many AIA Honor, COTE Top Ten, and other international awards; a recent high point is the 2015 AIA Institute Honor for Collaborative Achievement. Transsolar consults for a variety of projects, ranging from residential and university buildings to museum design, campus planning, and urban design. Our firm also has a history of art collaboration where the knowledge and skill to manipulate a space’s thermodynamic conditions are required. Notable examples are “cloudscapes” with Tetsuo Kondo and “lightscapes” with Anja Thierfelder at the 2010 and 2016 Architecture Biennale in Venice. Transsolar has been operating for more than 25 years with offices in Stuttgart, Munich, Paris and New York.

  • We have committed to support TREEO in their ongoing efforts to establish best practices, where strategic investments support local communities with reforestation projects and with creating a culture where in the future the harvested trees will be used for sustainable applications such as biochar production or timber construction. While we recognize that carbon accounting for biological sequestration is a topic of ongoing debate, we have thoroughly reviewed and support TREEO’s robust methodology and tracking system, which ensures these carbon offsets are of the highest quality. They are bringing credibility and transparency to the voluntary carbon market and their vision is to empower millions of farmers worldwide to supply the world with high-quality carbon dioxide removals at scale. This workshop and open discussion show the efforts of all involved parties to understand how to continue on this path maximizing the credibility and robustness of the methodology....

CO2 Storage - Status Quo and Exchange: Insights from our Collaborative Workshop🌍 On March 21st, TREEO, Transsolar KlimaEngineering and DGNB German Sustainable Building Council hosted an interactive workshop to discuss the current state and future of carbon storage in the construction sector. Stakeholders from across the timber value chain—regulatory bodies, standard owners, dMRV providers, and implementers—came together to exchange perspectives and improve carbon credit systems. Do you know?🤔 Timber buildings can store carbon for decades, making them a crucial part of climate-friendly construction! However, tracking this storage from tree growth to building materials remains a challenge. Key Takeaways from the Workshop TREEO’s Approach: From Monitoring to Impact TREEO 🌱 Cooling the planet showcased current single-tree monitoring technology to track carbon sequestration and discussed the need to extend tracking across the entire timber lifecycle: harvesting, processing, and installation in buildings. The workshop also explored how residual biomass can be repurposed into high-value products like biochar, insulation materials, and pellets. 🌱 A case study from Uganda’s Timber Innovation Centre illustrated how LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) helps measure biogenic carbon storage and GWP emissions. 🏢 DGNB’s Perspective on LCA & Carbon Credits The DGNB German Sustainable Building Council certification system promotes GHG reduction and climate-neutral building operations, but is not yet aligned with carbon credit systems. However, upcoming regulations and better data availability may change this. DGNB is working on enhancing LCA processes to support carbon credit frameworks in the future. 📜 CSI’s Insights on the Construction Carbon Sink Standard Carbon Standards International AG (CSI) recently introduced the Construction-C-Sink standards, which are currently in public review. These standards focus on practical implementation and supply chain monitoring. CSI is also partnering with Openly to develop pilot projects using material passports to track carbon impact. 🇩🇪 Sphera’s View on Upcoming Norms in Germany Sphera emphasized the importance of LCA in generating credible Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These declarations must consider biogenic, fossil, and land-use change GWP. While carbon offsetting is not yet part of the product system under review, biogenic carbon may be recognized—except when sourced from native forests. What’s Next? 🚀 🔹 Developing pilot project proposals with DGNB 🔹 Evaluating new buildings based on material sources 🔹 Advancing material passports for better traceability 🔹 Monitoring GWP emissions & biogenic carbon storage to support DGNB’s evolving standards and potential EU regulations. Collaboration is key! Let's shape a future where timber construction actively contributes to carbon storage. 💚 ------ #SustainableBuilding #CarbonCredits #TimberConstruction Gandhi Bramayusa Johannes Schwegler

  • Erik Olsen is part of the team completing ongoing studies of the Artillery Sheds at Chinati in Marfa, Texas. On April 4–6, 2025, he will take part in the symposium Art, Architecture, and the Middle Landscape in Marfa. Participants will explore the relationship between art, architecture, and land at Chinati by focusing on one of the most significant examples of their integration: the former artillery sheds that house Donald Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum. Considering the history of the buildings and their broader influence on museum architecture, the symposium will focus on current efforts to restore the structures, preserve Judd’s architectural interventions, protect the art, and care for the surrounding landscape.

Design Colloquium | Technology alone won't save us | Tommaso Bitossi The 2025 Design Colloquium on March 19-21 will explore the strategies, tools, and actions designers can use to create meaningful, lasting impact. Each year, leaders from exceptional architecture, engineering, and design firms gather in an intimate and candid setting to exchange ideas and experiences. As part of the 2025 Advisory Board, Tommaso Bitossi will join a panel discussing: "What are we doing as designers to drive positive impact, and how do we align intention with outcomes?" To spark conversation and challenge perspectives, Tommaso will provoke the audience with the statement: ‘Technology alone Won’t Save Us. Unless We Shift from Greed to Need.’ It’s a compelling challenge for designers: How do we ensure that our work isn’t just chasing innovation for its own sake but is truly aligned with social and ecological responsibility? What are your thoughts? Do you agree? Tommaso is looking forward to the 2-day event in San Francisco. Learn more about it here https://lnkd.in/dj8-kD6V
