  • 📋As Member States meet this week at ISWG-GHG 17 at the IMO to discuss historic regulations for GHG emissions from international shipping, they will consider various policy proposals as part of the mid-term measures (MTM) to achieve the 2023 GHG targets.   🚢 In this second edition of our Countdown newsletter series on IMO, we dive into flexible compliance mechanisms under consideration for a goal-based fuel standard (GFS). We breakdown what flexible compliance means, how it works, its potential impacts on the transition to sustainable marine fuels, and what we can learn from its use in other policies, such as FuelEU.   🌱 Flexibility in a GFS allows ships to bank and trade surplus compliance, incentivizing the use of sustainable marine fuels, and offering alternatives to non-compliance fees (remedial units). The Comprehensive Impact Assessment on Fleets found that it could lower GHG reduction costs up to 6%. However, concerns around stockpiling surplus units, transaction costs, reduced non-compliance revenue for reinvestment, and geographical concentration of sustainable fuel should be carefully considered when designing flexibility mechanisms. 📰 Read the full newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/d8fuvWgd   📧 Not a subscriber yet? • 🌍 As part of the Center's Green Corridor Pre-Feasibility Study in Namibia, we had the incredible opportunity to present our work at the Global African Hydrogen Summit 2024 and host the project’s Consortium Incubation Workshop (CIW) in Windhoek. Mira Bergem (Public Affairs Manager), Johan Svendsen (Head of Program - Catalyze Ecosystem Transition) and Beatrice Malnati (Project Manager) took part in a variety of panels and discussions with a focus on driving critical investments and financing into bankable green energy projects across various sectors, including hydrogen, renewables, power, infrastructure, transportation, and mobility. 📌One of the key takeaways from our visit is the urgency to address the cost disparity between grey and green fuels. While the promise of green hydrogen is immense, the current economic landscape still favors cheaper, fossil-based alternatives. There is a pressing need for further discussions around funding green corridors and closing the Residual Cost Gap to make green fuels more accessible and competitive. As we look to the future, it's clear that bridging this gap is essential for accelerating Africa's transition to a sustainable and prosperous green energy future. 🌱Let’s continue to work together to turn ambition into action and advance Africa’s Green Industrial Revolution. • ⌛️171 days to March 2025, when IMO Member States will conclude negotiations on MARPOL Amendments for the mid-term measures 📋Next spring, the Member States of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) will decide on historic regulations for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from international shipping. These mid-term measures will either be a turning point and drive decarbonization of the industry — or fail to meet the ambition of the IMO strategy and lock in fossil fuel use. 🚢 In our latest Countdown newsletter series, we focus on the development of critical mid-term measures (MTM) at the IMO. We share data-driven, independent analysis to enable the shipping industry and Member States to work together to drive durable decarbonization. Read our first newsletter in this series here: https://lnkd.in/dJ2UhwNn 💡Join our webinar tomorrow 12 September 2024 with the Chair of ISWG-GHG Sveinung Oftedal, our CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen, and a panel of industry experts to explore how the MTMs could reshape shipping and create new growth opportunities — register here: https://lnkd.in/gbz4EqbS 📧 Not a subscriber yet? • 🌍 Decarbonization of the shipping industry demands innovation and adaptability, with alternative fuels and technologies that cut net fuel consumption being key focus areas. E-fuels, synthesized from renewable hydrogen, are a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the mid- to long-term. However, the scale of renewable electricity needed for hydrogen production through electrolysis remains a considerable hurdle. 🔋 While sectors like the automotive industry have seen success with direct electrification and battery-electric vehicles, the energy density of batteries is still too low for deep-sea shipping to fully embrace this technology. ⚓ To push the transition of the maritime industry, the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) has initiated a pre-feasibility study to examine the potential of direct electrification for ocean-going vessels. In this report, derive a position on the following questions: • Is battery-electric propulsion a viable transition pathway and, if so, at what scale? • In which vessel segments and sizes could battery-electric propulsion be a technically viable pathway? • In which vessel segments and sizes can battery-electric propulsion represent a solid business case? • How big is the potential of battery-electric propulsion to save renewable energy from a life-cycle perspective compared to usage of e-fuels? Read the full publication and findings: https://lnkd.in/d6G-pbsX Thanks to our partners DS NORDEN, MAERSK, Siemens Energy, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Stolt Tankers, Tsuneishi Technical Services (Phils.), Inc. and Sea for collaborating on this project. #ZeroCarbonShipping

  • As we conclude our Countdown to FuelEU series, the message is clear: for the first time companies looking to invest in green shipping have a business case from this landmark regulation for investing in sustainable marine fuels. With compliance mandatory in almost four months, we use our last newsletter to look at what we can expect in the coming years. We find that there is likely enough biodiesel and LNG in the system to cover 90% of the 2025 intensity reduction mandate. However, we see growing challenges, particularly concerning the availability and cost of biodiesel. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gNxAThD6 Biodiesel, currently the most cost-effective blending option for conventional vessels to stay in compliance, faces substantial uncertainty. Feedstock constraints and competition from other sectors could strain supply and drive up prices. While ports globally are ramping up biofuel offerings, the question remains: will it be enough to meet the growing demand? The small share of biodiesel needed from 2025 to 2029 to meet FuelEU standards may not pose too big of a challenge, however, from 2030 companies will need to triple the amount of biodiesel to stay in compliance. This will likely drive companies to look beyond biodiesel to options including onshore power, wind-assisted propulsion, and of course advanced alternative fuels such a e-fuels. The high costs of these alternatives can be offset through the pooling mechanism, covered extensively in this newsletter series. In the rapidly evolving policy landscape, standing still is not an option. The winners will be those who embed decarbonization into their business strategies sooner rather than later. With increasing mandates from FuelEU, uncertainty over biofuel availability, as well as coming regulation from the IMO, companies will benefit from having robust strategies in place for how to navigate the regulatory landscape. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gNxAThD6 Explore previous articles and understand the basics of the regulation on our FuelEU page: https://lnkd.in/g5xj5_VG In September, we will begin a new ‘Countdown’ series, dedicated to the IMO mid-term measures under review by MEPC.
