🌳 Could increasing local management of forest lands be a solution to enhance forest protection and maintain carbon sinks in the Congo Basin? 🌍 We are excited to feature perspectives from Indigenous and local communities on how community-led forest management can strengthen forest conservation, protect land rights, and contribute to livelihoods in the Congo Basin. Hosted by WRI Africa and Global Forest Watch, this webinar will highlight the integration of geospatial tools like GFW with traditional ecological knowledge to document and highlight the efforts of Indigenous and local communities in sustainably managing their customary forestlands. Empowering the youth so that they can participate in national climate action can have significant contributions to the success of national climate plans such as NDCs and LT-LEDS. In Nigeria, where 70% of the population is under 30, it’s critical to engage young people to ensure they are part of discussions affecting their future. World Resources Institute, in partnership with GreenHubAfrica Foundation and national experts, has developed five youth training modules on key subject areas to support Nigeria’s NDC and LT-LEDS implementation. Good news! All of these modules are available online, free of charge, until the end of December. 👇 - Climate Finance & Grant Writing - Energy Access & Just Transition - Green Entrepreneurship - Climate Change & Health - Climate Negotiations & Policy Analysis Don’t miss out on this opportunity. 🌍 Our Climate Economics and Finance program team has just concluded an intensive 3-day workshop on aligning critical interventions to advance climate action across Africa. As a catalyst for human systems’ transitions towards climate-forward pathways and sustainable economic growth, the Climate, Economics and Finance program enables the unlocking of climate finance to drive impactful change. By aligning programs like WRI’s P4G Partnerships, Resilience Adaptation Mainstreaming Program (RAMP) and National Climate Action, we aim to build lasting resilience and bridge the gap between global climate goals and local impact. This collaboration strengthens evidence-based advocacy, fosters strategic alliances, enhances private sector participation, and drives substantial investment to implement Africa’s climate and green economy ambitions. 🌱 Together, we can create a sustainable future. 🌍 Exciting times for AirQo and WRI Africa! We were honored to host Matt Brittin, President of Google's EMEA Business & Operations, and Alex Okosi, Google Africa MD, at our Nairobi Firestation air quality monitoring site. Thanks to Google’s generous funding, we’ve been able to construct and install advanced air quality monitoring systems that leverage AI to collect data and identify patterns. This technology not only enhances air quality analysis but also provides an accessible map of current air conditions in Nairobi and enables accurate predictions. Our discussions, led by Rebekah Shirley, Ph.D., George Mwaniki (Ph.D.) and Engineer Bainomugisha, focused on how real-time data empowers communities, governments, and stakeholders to take informed action towards sustainable solutions for air quality improvement. This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to a cleaner, healthier future for Africa. Together, we are making strides toward better air quality for all! 🌱 WRI is thrilled to have partnered with the City of Kigali and the #IgitiCyanjye campaign to launch the #SUNCASA project: with $22 million from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, the multi-city initiative will restore natural landscapes, implementing gender-responsive and nature-based solutions for long-term climate resilience in #Kigali. Local climate action is key to driving long-term resilience: over the weekend, thousands of Kigali’s residents kicked off the campaign as part of October’s #Umuganda to plant more than 20,000 trees. Over the next few years, we’ll be partnering with the City and local organizations to empower women and marginalized groups to play greater roles in driving climate adaptation – helping to address climate risks like flooding, erosion, and landslides in the city of 1.7 million. Many thanks to the City of Kigali, our local partners and communities who joined the launch event! 💻 Join our upcoming webinar this Thursday to learn how local governments can play a role in transforming energy access and leading the way toward a more inclusive and sustainable future! Sub-national governments can play a crucial role in finding local solutions to global challenges like climate change and energy access. In Kenya, the 2010 Constitution and the Energy Act of 2019 empower county governments with autonomy over energy planning, enabling locally developed approaches for equitable and inclusive energy access. 💡 Government Of Makueni County is a leading example, demonstrating how political leadership and utilization of innovative tools such as World Resources Institute's Energy Access Explorer can drive energy access. Makueni recently launched its comprehensive, data-driven, inclusive and integrated energy plan, complete with an investment prospectus that highlights opportunities in powering healthcare and agricultural value chains. 🔔 Register for the webinar to learn more ▶️ https://bit.ly/48h19eq #EnergyAccess #EnergyPlanning #EnergyAccessExplorer

WRI Africa and Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) were pleased to join the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and FAO at the launch of Kenya's Post-Harvest Strategy for Food Loss and Waste Reduction last week. During the event, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Dr. Andrew Karanja highlighted the pressing need to tackle post-harvest losses and scale up efforts to combat food waste to ensure Kenya's population is sustainably fed. 🥑 World Resources Institute will support the implementation of the strategy, particularly at the county level, to drive sustainable solutions and enhance food security in Kenya. #FoodLossFoodWaste #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture #PostHarvestLoss
