On Thursday, September 26, The Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) Board Chairperson Adela Issachar ARU SPTO CEO Chris Cocker was on a work mission in New Caledonia, where they were received by Prime Minister Louis Mapou. Representatives from SPTO visited New Caledonia in preparation for the upcoming SPTO Board of Directors and Council of Tourism Ministers of Member States meetings. Day 2!! On the second and final day of the Fiji Tourism Convention, which coincided with World Tourism Day, the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) team actively participated in Working Group Discussions and other key activities. SPTO Marketing Manager Kiniviliame Raicebe represented SPTO CEO Chris Cocker, joining Fiji's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, in marking World Tourism Day 2024. The event included a tree-planting activity to commemorate the occasion. "On this World Tourism Day (September 27th), we recognize the role of tourism in fostering understanding and reconciliation across cultures. This year's theme, Tourism and Peace, highlights that tourism is not just an economic driver; it connects and strengthens our communities, preserves culture, and promotes peace-building. Despite the vast ocean separating our islands, we are all part of a global community," Mr. Raicebe shared. SPTO Sustainable Tourism Manager, Christina Leala-Gale, presented an overview of the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Standards, stating, "Nineteen out of twenty countries have advocated for regional standards, developed through collaboration with industry, government, and the private sector. These standards align with the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC), covering governance, rights, culture, environment, and energy conservation. Although voluntary, they require continuous effort and resources to implement effectively." #WorldTourismDay2024 #TourismAndPeace #SustainableTourism #TourismStandards #PacificTourism #CulturalPreservation #GlobalCommunity #TreePlanting
