What is the potential of increasing tree cover in cities? 🌳 Improves air quality: Urban trees and plants absorb pollutants and produce oxygen. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), urban trees can reduce particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) by 10-20%, significantly improving the air we breathe. 🌞 Reduces urban heat: Urban greening can cool the city air by around 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves, with parks and wetlands. 🌞 A recent report has revealed that wind turbines and solar panels generated 30% of the European Union’s electricity in the first half of this year, surpassing fossil fuels. Switching to renewable energy sources is one of the most effective ways to combat climate change. 🌍 Water is one of our planet's most precious resources, yet it is often taken for granted. With 2.2 billion people lacking access to safely managed drinking water services (Source: United Nations), managing our water usage sustainably is more important than ever, especially during the high-consumption summer months. In Malawi, where one in three households lack access to clean water and basic sanitation, an ambitious project has been launched: 900 boreholes have been installed in the Dowa and Kaunga Districts. This initiative not only provides clean water to communities—eliminating the need to boil water for safety—but also reduces pressure on local forests and decreases harmful smoke exposure from open fires. Through close collaboration with local communities and government agencies, this project is ensuring sustainable, long-term access to clean water for thousands of people. 🌊 Plastic waste is choking our oceans, and the future looks bleak unless we act now The amount of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems could nearly triple from 9-14 million tons per year in 2016 to a projected 23-37 million tons per year by 2040 according to the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme). 🚨 The impact is clear: Plastic waste endangers marine life, disrupts ecosystems, and even affects human health. By making small changes in our daily habits, we can prevent millions of tons of plastic from polluting our waters and harming marine life. Here are some recommendations from the UNDP: - Switch to reusables: Simple changes like using reusable bags, bottles, and straws can reduce plastic waste by up to 95%. - Opt for minimal packaging: If every European household reduced plastic packaging by just 1 kilogram a year, we could prevent over 250,000 tons of waste annually. - Join a beach cleanup: One hour spent cleaning up a beach can remove up to 20 pounds of plastic, directly preventing it from entering our oceans. - Choose biodegradable alternatives: Opting for biodegradable or compostable items can reduce plastic pollution by up to 70% when properly managed. - Dress sustainably: The fashion industry generates 20% of global wastewater and 10% of carbon emissions—more than international flights and shipping combined. 🌍 Wetlands: Lungs of the planet to preserve 🌿 According to the Ramsar Convention, wetlands store about 35% of terrestrial carbon and provide drinking water to over 2 billion people. Wetlands, such as marshes, estuaries, and mangroves, play a crucial role in climate regulation, flood protection, and biodiversity preservation. They act as natural sponges, reducing flood risks while serving as vital habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species. Unfortunately, these essential ecosystems are threatened by urban development and climate change. To protect them, it is crucial to support wetland restoration and reduce human impacts. One successful initiative is the Mangrove Conservation and Restoration project in San Crisanto, Mexico, supported by ClimateSeed. This project has restored and conserved around 700 hectares of mangroves, removing an estimated 35,528 tCO₂e to date. By maintaining local canals and cenotes, the project not only preserves biodiversity but also boosts the local economy through sustainable tourism. 🚆 🚨 A staggering 25% rise in CO₂ emissions from tourism-related transportation is projected, with levels expected to increase from 1,597 million to 1,998 million tonnes between 2016 and 2030, according to the UN Tourism. To reverse this trend, we must rethink how we travel. Choosing the train over the plane is a simple yet powerful solution. 💡 Why the train? Trains are the least polluting form of public transport. For a 1,000 km journey, such as Paris to Rome or Paris to Berlin, each passenger emits only 2.4 kg of CO₂ by high-speed train, compared to 178 kg by plane, according to the "Mon Impact Carbone" simulator by ADEME A striking ratio of 1 to 75! The impact of your choices: - Reducing air travel can significantly lower your carbon footprint. - Supporting rail travel promotes more sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism practices.
