Social development bank for Europe
À propos
The Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) is a multilateral development bank with a social vocation. Established on 16 April 1956 in order to bring solutions to the problems of refugees, its scope of action has progressively widened to other sectors of action directly contributing to strengthening social cohesion in Europe. The CEB represents a major instrument of the policy of solidarity in Europe: it uses its resources for the financing of social projects in order to help its 43 member states achieve sustainable and equitable growth.

📖 Read a new research paper on Microfinance as a Tool to Support Europe’s Missing Entrepreneurs. It introduces a simple theoretical framework - the Entrepreneurship Pyramid - to better understand barriers to business creation faced by disadvantaged groups and to examine the role of microfinance providers in addressing these challenges. 📍 Entrepreneurship generates significant socio-economic benefits and can support the socioeconomic integration of disadvantaged individuals and groups. Microfinance is a tool for making entrepreneurship a reality for those who might not otherwise be able to access the financing necessary for their plans. As a social development bank, the CEB recognises the social impact of microfinance. We committed to increasing our support to microfinance institutions in our Strategic Framework, 2023-2027. At the #HSC24 panel on inclusive and accessible urban living Vice-Governor Johannes M. Boehmer highlighted the CEB’s partnerships such as the one with the City of Barcelona. Such partnerships are centered on knowledge sharing so that the success of projects like the Superblock in Barcelona, which saw tactile paving slabs installed around the city to improve street safety for the visually impaired, can be replicated across the CEB's member countries. While systematically applying a vulnerability lens already in the design phase of its projects, #CEB is proud to be taking tangible steps to support sustainable and inclusive solutions for cities by: ➡ focusing on developing long-term city partnerships to ensure no one is left behind during urban environment transformations ➡ contributing to the „European Resilience Partnership“ roadmap to actively support knowledge sharing between European cities ➡ furthering collaboration with MDBs and national development banks to streamline and synchronise approaches to promote inclusive and resilient urban environments.
