✨ Employee Spotlight: Stéphanie Baltus-Bergamo ✨ Stéphanie has been an essential member of the team for most of Kanop’s lifetime. But before joining Kanop, she was the Lead Data Engineer at Leboncoin.fr, where she oversaw and mentored more than 40 team members. As a talented Staff Engineer, Stéphanie is responsible for making sure the Kanop platform is scalable, secure and runs smoothly so that the other engineers on the team can focus on enhancing our AI models and developing additional indicators. During her free time, you can find Stéphanie building legos, or rocking out to some metal. But more than likely than not, you will find her training for triathlons (rain or shine). We appreciate your technical skill, commitment, and your caring, team-oriented personality. Thank you for all you do, Stephanie!

Are reforestation projects more effective than we thought? A recent study in Nature Climate Change analyzed project costs and carbon sequestration data from reforestation projects across 138 countries. The findings reveal that by optimizing the balance between natural regeneration and tree planting, we can achieve up to 10.3 times more cost-effective carbon abatement compared to the latest IPCC estimates. As reforestation projects gain popularity, it's crucial to ensure they not only provide the opportunity for cost-effective carbon sequestration but that they also maintain high quality. Verra's Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) methodology, VM0047, along with the new ABACUS label —which enhances the Verra framework— helps to ensure quality from day one. But the methodological changes come with added complexities, so here is how we can support you… ARR eligibility studies (even at the jurisdictional level)  Using our advanced machine learning models we are able to derive high quality historical biomass estimates at the project, regional, or even national level which allows us to pinpoint areas eligible for afforestation/reforestation and their corresponding sequestering potential. VM0047 PDD support Our PDD support for VM0047 includes full dynamic baseline support, deriving the performance benchmark, ex-ante estimations, and more. This means you no longer have to rely on NDVI, you can use the Kanop derived stocking index based on direct biomass estimates. This also means your project will benefit from enhanced project and control plot selection and matching. Project Monitoring  In addition to conducting project monitoring and verification in alignment with VM0047’s requirements, our platform can be used to monitor your ARR projects regardless of the methodology. If you are interested in finding out more about how we can help support your project development/design/monitoring please reach out to hello@kanop.io The article from Nature: https://lnkd.in/e5n6rJap More information about the ABACUS Label: https://lnkd.in/ebBJVctD

The European Space Agency - ESA has agreed to fund the development of the first truly scalable biodiversity monitoring tool. And we at Kanop have the honor of being selected to build it! Understanding organic biomass is very important to assessing climate impact, but it is not the whole picture. This tool will have the capacity to combine satellite imagery with data collected on the ground to produce habitat maps and metrics on floral diversity, such as species abundance, evenness, and richness. We are seeing an increasing demand for this capability, not only with stakeholders of nature-based projects, but also with companies that are looking to align with nature/climate frameworks and regulations (TNFD, ESRS, SBTN, CDP, etc.). If this interests you, please reach out to hello@kanop.io and check out this article written in Carbon Pulse by Sergio Colombo to learn more https://lnkd.in/dPEA8Jim #Biodiversity #ClimateImpact #SatelliteImagery #GroundTruth #Sustainability #MRV #ESA #Kanop

🌱 Important update for ARR project developers 🌱 Verra recently announced that they are inactivating all Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation (ARR) modules underneath VM0007 REDD+ methodology framework (including VMD0041, VMD0043, VMD0045), meaning that any ARR activities underneath that umbrella must transition to using VM0047. VM0047 uses a dynamic baselining approach, based on the performance benchmark. This method compares project areas against similar, unprotected control areas by measuring differences in biomass growth both within and outside project boundaries. This ensures more accurate and reliable assessments of the environmental impact. At Kanop, we have developed a process to support project developers using this methodology. We’ve already helped numerous clients save time and resources, enhancing project efficiency and effectiveness. Plus, our AGB-based approach outperforms traditional indicators such as NDVI/NDFI in quantifying additionality. Verra announcement: https://lnkd.in/epnEZpdb How we support VM0047: https://lnkd.in/eGvtJvBG If you would like to find some time to discuss how we can support you or your partners with this methodology, please reach out to hello@kanop.io - we look forward to hearing from you!
