Marble is a climate tech venture studio solving hard climate problems. Our mission: bring us at least one gigaton closer to net zero and create a future that thrives. We do this by partnering with scientists, engineers and operators to build deeptech startups that slash emissions, remove carbon, and cool the planet. The climate crisis is the most pressing challenge of our times. Solving it requires breakthrough technology, as available solutions only get us halfway. We can’t put all our hopes in classic tech transfer. We need to intentionally create and deploy radical solutions for hard-to-abate emissions. Backed by top climate and deep tech investors, we're searching for individuals who could apply their skills to solve hard climate problems and who have the will to turn their skills into a new startup company. Joining as Founders-in-Residence, they work with us to scope high-impact climate opportunities and build ventures with massive impact potential. We invest in the best teams at pre-seed.

    ⚡️ Reimagining Biorefineries Sustainable biomass plays a crucial role in achieving net zero by providing flexible renewable energy, enabling negative emissions, and helping decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. Given this growing demand we need to establish a large scale supply of biomass and build infrastructure to leverage it. One promising route is to leverage waste streams from lignocellulose -just 25% of global agriculture and forestry residues could yield over 20 EJ worth of biofuels. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 Scaling next-generation biomass processing is challenging, largely due to the complexity of lignin, which makes high-yield fractionation difficult. Efficient fractionation is crucial for maximising the value of plant cell wall materials in producing a wide range of chemicals and fuels. The bio-refinery model remains unprofitable, constrained by low margins on bulk chemicals and limited markets for specialty chemicals. Achieving a half-gigaton impact and profitability requires both product streams to be viable. 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 We aim to create a company to efficiently produce 2nd generation biofuels and other products from abundant waste biomass — with a particular focus on bio-ethanol, bio-diesel, aromatics, and other valuable chemicals. Going from the crude dregs to high quality diesel and commodity chemicals, oil undergoes distillations, chemical crackings, hydrogenations… and list goes on! Even more processes covert the energy stored in oil into the electricity we use to power everything from our homes to cell phones. 🛢️ To replace our fossil energy economy with one based on renewables, we need to face this complexity.     🥇 Aerleum snatches Gold 🥇 With 144 start-ups from 20 countries participating, Aerleum took home first place in the EDF Pulse Awards 2024! 🏋️♀️ Just in time for the Olympics, Steven and Sébastien took home their own gold medal, winning their category "Developing solutions for carbon capture, utilisation and offsetting”. Since spinning out of Marble in 2023, Aerleum have been working at breakneck speed on their innovative single-step process to produce carbon-neutral e-fuels from atmospheric CO2. ⚡️ Receiving the award from Chairman and CEO of EDF, Luc Rémont marks another milestone (and medal for their trophy cabinet).     🔥 Why now is the best time to build in Geothermal Energy: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺: Global power demand is due to triple by 2050 as electrification grows. Abundant clean electricity is necessary to decarbonise industry, transportation and buildings, along with supporting carbon dioxide removal and desalination. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: Geothermal energy offers firm, clean, 24/7 baseload power with a minimal footprint, making it an ideal for consistent and reliable energy production. Only 0.1% of the Earth’s heat content could meet global energy needs for over 2 million years. 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: Geothermal is largely versatile and can provide both power and heat. The Total Addressable Market (TAM) for geothermal includes the global electricity market ($1.6T), space heating ($1.5T), and low-temperature industrial heat markets ($72B). 𝗧𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀: In Europe, feed in tariffs for the electricity generated from renewable sources $278/MWh (Germany) can provide a cushion for high-cost projects. In the US, investment tax credits (ITC) at 30% of CAPEX and Production Tax Credits (PTC) at $27.5/MWh on power produced for the first 10-years of operation will support geothermal projects. 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Innovations are booming in accessing heat beneath our feet, improving rock permeability, and/or fluid circulation across next-gen geothermal modalities.
