What economic opportunities could robust Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) unlock and how can ambitious climate action be delivered? 📣 With support from the German Federal Foreign Office, UNDP and OECD - OCDE are joining forces to tackle these questions in a report set for release in mid-2025. As nations prepare their next round of NDCs, this report aims to build the economic case for stronger NDCs that drive investment and put people at the heart of climate action. Despite the progress that has been made in reducing emissions, decades of climate change impacts are still ahead of us. It is estimated that in 2023, extreme climate events caused around USD 250 billion in losses, most of which were uninsured. 📢 In the latest OECD - OCDE environment-focused blog post, Michael Mullan discusses the need to build resilience to the impacts of climate change and the necessary investments in adaptation to save lives, protect livelihoods, and contribute to sustained economic development. Find the blog post 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eVMuKkZn 📅 Interested in learning more? Mark your calendar for 14 November, 13:00 – 14:00 (CET), to join us for the virtual release event of the OECD’s Climate Adaptation Investment Framework, alongside speakers from the University of Oxford, Atlantic Council and Asian Development Bank (ADB). This framework has been developed to help governments implement the policies needed to increase public and private investment in climate change adaptation. Adapting to growing climate change risks and achieving climate-resilient development requires aligning finance with such goals. Significant data, information and conceptual gaps remain. A new OECD - OCDE paper explores possible methods, data and metrics to help fill those gaps. To do so, the paper: 📊 Highlights existing approaches and data to assess physical climate risks in finance. 📉 Identifies complementary steps and data for assessing the alignment of finance with climate resilience policy goals. ✅ Suggests actions that policymakers, researchers and market players can take to support credible and comparable assessments. 🗒 Calls for pilot studies to help adjust and refine the approach while identifying feasible and practical indicators. Read more ➡️ http://oe.cd/5L6 The paper builds on discussions and findings from a recent OECD-Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) workshop on assessing the climate resilience of finance. 📢Happening tomorrow! Don’t miss these OECD side-events at the UN Biodiversity Conference: ⏰13:20- 14:40 (COT): 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬? A growing number of financial authorities have been considering whether risks stemming from biodiversity loss are relevant from a financial risk perspective and what are the potential implications. Co-hosted by the OECD - OCDE, the Hungarian Central Bank (Magyar Nemzeti Bank) and the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, this event will highlight key findings from the recent OECD publication ‘Assessing nature-related risks in the Hungarian financial system’ with a focus on: ✅ The role of central banks in mitigating risks from biodiversity loss to the financial system. ✅ The challenges in identifying, measuring, and monitoring nature-related financial risks. ✅ How financial authorities can work with central government to ensure the resilience of economic and financial systems against environmental and climate risks. Find out more ➡️https://lnkd.in/efyTgDXU ⏰18:00- 19:00 (COT): 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐩 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 To halt and reverse global biodiversity loss, countries will need to scale up biodiversity-positive incentives and mobilise additional finance for the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of biodiversity. Bringing together a range of insights from both international organisations and countries, this event will: ✅ Present the latest data and trends on incentives and finance for biodiversity, including development co-operation and biodiversity-related development finance. ✅ Showcase latest initiatives, and highlights insights on barriers and opportunities for scaling up biodiversity-positive incentives and finance, domestically and internationally, to meet targets 18 and 19 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Are carbon credit markets moving toward higher integrity? ✅ Progress is happening, but there's still more work ahead. 🏛️ Governments play a key role in shaping the norms for carbon market integrity. These messages resounded at last week's annual Strategic Dialogue of the Carbon Market Platform (CMP) in Rome. Co-chaired by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Ministry of the Environment, Japan, the meeting gathered G7 countries and 35 other stakeholders to discuss carbon credit markets and carbon dioxide removals, with key insights from the OECD’s latest analysis and a roundtable led by IETA. Delegates welcomed recent progress on developing the new Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism. They reiterated their commitment to work towards positive and robust outcomes under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement at COP29 Azerbaijan, to guide future market-based climate co-operation. 🔎Learn more about the work of the Carbon Market Platform: 🔗 Website ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e9zW9tVy 📗Latest paper ➡️ https://oe.cd/cmp-paper24 #Article6 | #ParisAgreement | #COP29 | #CarbonCredits | #NetZero G7 ITALIA

📊 Curious how biodiversity-related taxes measure up to overall environmental tax revenues? In light of the UN Biodiversity Conference, dive into the key figures from the OECD - OCDE's Environment at a Glance publication: 💰 In OECD countries, biodiversity-related taxes generated USD 10 billion in 2022, accounting for only 1.3% of all environmentally related tax revenue. 🏭 The bulk of this revenue was raised by taxing pollution (0.34%), resources (0.41%), and transport (0.27%), while the energy tax base played a minor role in generating revenue. ❗ The share of biodiversity-related taxes compared to all environmentally related tax revenue has only increased marginally since the 2000s. Additionally, the share of environmentally related tax revenue compared to total tax revenue in OECD countries continues to decline, amounting to 4% of total tax revenue in 2022, down from 5.9% in the early 2000s. What do plastics have to do with biodiversity? A 🆕OECD - OCDE report shows that, without new policies, the stock of plastics in rivers and oceans will double by 2040. Plastics in the environment last for a long time, during which time wildlife can become entangled in or ingest them – which can be lethal. Urgent action is needed to reverse these current trends. What can policymakers do to eliminate plastic pollution, and in turn secure a better future for biodiversity?
