"At a city level Paris was closely followed by key European gateway cities such as Frankfurt, Madrid and Dusseldorf. At a country level Germany, France and the Netherlands dominate the rankings, with Germany on top because of its many cities, its population density, interconnectivity and wealth." Porsche Consulting published in 2021 the study "Last Mile Delivery 2030" and outlined the gap between the parcel volume and the delivery capacity. Unfortunately they focussed on parcels and the input of the parcel industry, they didn't reflect the possibilities of delivery from stores and inner city stocks via short delivery by bike or on foot. The future is the collaboration of the retail capacities with the messenger capacities. On the one hand, the development is determined by #demographics: more and more people can no longer afford the physical strain of shopping, or they no longer want to do it due to time constraints, such as families and working people. On the other hand, the service also offers #data that digitally savvy companies use for anticipatory logistics design as well as for optimizing and decelerating transport through #HomeReplenishment. Good description of the actual situation by Horst Manner-Romberg … but it’s not the death of qCommerce, but next step in evolution. #DataAnalytics and #HomeReplenishment are the next levels as well as the integration in retail concepts with better use of real estate 24/7/365

"Whether as an on-demand shuttle, a high-tech on-call bus, as a flexible distribution center for goods and parcels or as a mobile sales store – with the futuristic U-Shift vehicle concept, German Aerospace Center (DLR) is bringing a new lease of life to the urban mobility and logistics of tomorrow. The central feature is the separation of the vehicle, called the driveboard, and the capsule-shaped structures for transporting people or goods. All the expensive technical components and systems are built into the U-shaped drive unit so that you can drive autonomously, electrically and quietly. For maximum cost-effectiveness, the driveboard is in operation around the clock if possible. The capsules, which are much cheaper to produce, can be designed for a variety of uses."

The German drone manufacturer WINGCOPTER and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt AUS) have jointly launched the “Drone Cargo Bike Express Delivery” project together with REWE. The pilot project called “ LieferMichel ” involves the delivery of food and other consumer goods to remote parts of the Hessian city of Michelstadt. The goods are initially dropped off completely emission-free by drone outside the villages at designated landing points. From there they reach the customer by electric cargo bike.

Let's address the elephant in the room that everyone in the last mile delivery sector is ignoring. During the last three years working on address intelligence, I've come to realize the importance of the last 100 meters in parcel delivery. This final stretch, often underestimated, is where true efficiency and customer satisfaction are either won or lost. I've had the privilege of speaking with the founders of some trailblazing companies like truemetrics (YC S23), Stoovo and Naurt. Their insights into enriching address intelligence have been nothing short of eye-opening. They're pioneering efforts to embed crucial details into addresses - from the best parking spots and specific drop-off points to exact entrance doors and access codes. It's these nuances that transform a standard delivery into a seamless experience. However, there's one key player in this field I haven't yet had the chance to converse with –Beans.ai Their work in this area is also pioneering, and I'm eager to hear their perspective. The goal of these companies aligns perfectly with what I believe is the future of last-mile delivery: a focus not just on the 'where,' but the 'how' of efficient and personalized deliveries. Imagine a driver who knows exactly where to park, which door to use, and how to avoid unnecessary delays. This isn't a distant future; it’s a present reality being shaped by these innovative companies. I'd love to open up this conversation to the wider community. I invite Ingo Boegemann founder of Truemetrics, Hantz Févry from Stoovo, Jack Maddalena 📍from Naurt, and Akash Agarwal from Beans.ai to share their unique perspectives on enhancing the last 100 meters. How do you envision the future of address intelligence in improving this critical final leg of delivery? And to my broader network: How are you addressing the complexities of the last 100 meters in your delivery processes? Let's share ideas and push the boundaries of what's possible in last-mile logistics. #LastMileInnovation #AddressIntelligence #FutureOfDelivery

"The strategy, which doesn’t include the company’s pharmacy operations, is meant to make handling of online orders more efficient by having a single system for handling goods rather than managing separate distribution networks for e-commerce and in-store sales. Walgreens says 78% of Americans live within 5 miles of one of its stores. The Deerfield, Ill.-based company joins other retailers including Target, Walmart and CVS Health that have started fulfilling more online orders out of stores as a way to speed up shipments, streamline inventory and make more use of their physical sites."
