Did you know 50-60% of all women will experience at least one UTI in her life and 52% of E. coli bacteria isolated from UTIs are resistant to at least one antibiotic or more? The silent epidemic of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is reshaping our fight against infections, with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) serving as a stark example of its devastating impact. "My UTI story needs to be shared. It’s a lonely place with stigma and cultural pressures… lack of understanding." These words from a 36-year-old woman in London encapsulate the often-overlooked struggle of millions. Her story, shared through the Story Bug Project, reveals the debilitating cycle of recurrent, antibiotic-resistant UTIs. The consequences of AMR extend far beyond physical discomfort: • Careers derailed • Social lives shattered • Intimate relationships strained "I want people to understand how horrific a UTI is because people are like, oh it’s a woman’s problem, everyone has a UTI.. just have some cranberry juice.” As drug developers and a society, we must recognize the urgency of addressing AMR and highlight the need to invest in new anti-bacterial development, raising awareness about AMR's far-reaching impacts. We aim to break the silence surrounding UTIs and AMR and strive everyday to build products to solve this critical need.
