SizeWise, a NovaUCD-based business that has developed a tool to provide precise shoe size measurements, aims to expand further into the UK after securing a partnership with Start-Rite, a British-based shoemaker. The firm, a UCD spin-out company, was founded by Alan Power in 2022, has five staff and has raised €250,000 in funding to date. It has developed a tool to get accurate measurements of someone’s foot for shoe sizes using a smartphone camera. “We’ve availed of a lot of resources from Enterprise Ireland. Funding is only a small part of it. Working with them gives us credibility and the mentoring they provide is a great help,” Power said. “We’ve already had meetings with their offices in the UK and the US. We’re entering trials in the ski hire sector in the US following that.” Start-Rite Shoes Ltd has signed on as a client with SizeWise, which fits in neatly with both the youth focus of the business and the company’s expansion plans. “They are our gateway to the UK. Their shoes are sold in over 400 retailers in the UK. We have a project mapped out with them to access the market,” Power said. “Our focus over the next few months is launching through the UK with them. Congratulations to SuperNode Ltd on its announcement today that it has secured €8 million of additional funding from current shareholders AKER Horizons and Volnay. The funding will be used for the further development of innovative superconducting transmission technology. SuperNode a cutting-edge technology company, and a graduate of NovaUCD, specialises in next-generation superconducting cable systems, capable of conveying 5-10 times more energy than conventional electricity cables. Last month the company announced the opening of its new Cable Technology Centre in Blyth, Northumberland, expanding SuperNode’s operations beyond Dublin. This Blyth facility represents the first phase of a larger, multi-year project to develop next-generation superconducting cables. John Fitzgerald, SuperNode, CEO said, “We are thankful for the continued backing from our major investors, Aker Horizons and Volnay. This funding will enable us to further develop our key initiatives, technology development at our Dublin and Blyth facilities, prototype testing and demonstration projects, and bringing this game-changing technology to market, supporting decarbonisation and energy independence.”

NIBRT Welcomes President of Vietnam NIBRT was honoured to welcome General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, His Excellency Mr. Tô Lâm, to our facility in Dublin today. President Lâm visited NIBRT as part of his delegation's state visit to Ireland. President Lâm was greeted at the facility by Darrin Morrissey (CEO of NIBRT), Emer Higgins (Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment), and the Irish Ambassador to Vietnam, Deirdre Ní Fhallúin. The visit began with a welcome address from NIBRT CEO Darrin Morrissey, who highlighted the institute's cutting-edge innovation and its role in the growth of Ireland’s biopharma industry. President Lâm and his delegation then toured the NIBRT facility. The visit concluded with a speech from President Lâm, in which he spoke about opportunities for mutual collaboration between Ireland and Vietnam. His address was delivered to an audience of NIBRT research and training staff, researchers, and a delegation of Vietnam’s key government officials. NIBRT was also delighted to introduce Mr Lâm to Vietnamese staff member Nga Lao, who works on the NIBRT research team. NIBRT looks forward to the many opportunities for collaboration with Vietnam in the future.
