O’Mahony Pike Architects is an architecture and urban design practice, with offices in Dublin and Cork.
About us
The design and placemaking work of O’Mahony Pike Architects has always been informed by the pioneering work of our founding partners, John O’Mahony and James Pike, both within the developing profession of planning and urban design, and the challenges of housing design for an expanding and increasingly urban society. From the beginning, we have focused on producing architecture which responds to contemporary social, environmental and economic concerns. We developed some of the first local authority Development Plans and Action Area Plans undertaken in Ireland after the introduction of the 1963 Local Government Development and Planning Act, and since then have continued to be at the forefront of both national and local planning policy and housing design. O’Mahony Pike Architects has always been interested in systems and utilising them in developing thoughtful architectural proposals, from the implementation of the latest prefabrication methods, to developing new urban housing models for patterning the city. This typological approach to design allows us to work across a series of scales, from the city block to individual housing unit, bringing a cohesion to our urban design work, which is firmly rooted in context. Our predecessor practice, Delany MacVeigh and Pike were designing modular precast and timber frame systems as far back as 1968, when speedy social housing delivery was a priority for the state. Today, we are continuing to explore, research and apply the latest thinking on rapid delivery building systems in order to address the housing shortage, while still designing exemplary, high quality projects.

Following the huge success of Ballymakenny Park development, O’Mahony Pike are excited to see the new Usher’s Mill development recently launch to market and continue to contribute to the growth of Drogheda. Within these early phases, there is permission for 270no. residential units (150no. houses, 116no. apartments and 4no. duplexes) along with a crèche. A triangular village green is located at the heart of the scheme, affording views south towards key landmarks within Drogheda Town Centre. Bounding the north of the development, an initial portion of a linear park is proposed with a later phase expected to complete this ‘green spine’ which in turn will develop and facilitate attractive looped pedestrian and cycle friendly paths and where possible to improve linkages.

We had an incredible time last Friday at our OMP Summer Outing to Westport. Our teams took part in several activities at Killary Adventure Centre. Whist the weather didn’t play ball it didn’t deter the team from taking part and putting their team building skills to the test. After finally drying out we enjoy a great dinner and night. Looking forward to next years outing already.

We were delighted to attend the launch of the Shanganagh Castle project this morning, by An Taoiseach Simion Harris and Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien. This is the first of the Land Development Agency (LDA)/ Local Authority schemes to be rolled out and contains a mixture of affordable purchase, cost rental & social housing, all designed to passive house standards, and delivered to a high standard by Walls Construction. Landscaping works to nearby Shanganagh Park and the new DART station are also on-going, which when combined with the Woodbrook development on the other side of the park, will realise the vision for the Woodbrook-Shanganagh Local Area Plan, creating a new community with excellent amenities and great public transport on its doorstep. It's impressive to see the precast structure and unitised façade being built simultaneously at The CarriageWorks. Bathroom pods have already been installed, and with the apartments sealed, interior fit-out can begin immediately. By utilizing Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), the project will be delivered on a more accelerated timeline and benefit from enhanced quality control. Down on site at our O’Devaney Gardens project for Bartra with John Sisk & Son Ltd checking in on progress. The structure of Block 2 has recently topped with scaffolding now fully erect. The plinth of Block 5 has also been completed ready for placement of the precast twin wall system and bathroom pods, key MMC components of the project. In total the scheme will consist of more than 1000 social, affordable, cost rental, and private homes over 9 blocks with Phase 1 due for completion in April 2026 “

After a considerable effort from both the design team and the contractor over the last few months, we are delighted that Block 10 in Jacobs Island has been completed within the project programme. The project provides a creche and 69 residential units, which will be managed by Respond. Well done to everyone involved, with a special nod to the OBR Construction Group team for a really well finished building. The project is the first piece of the O’Mahony Pike masterplan for the area, and we look forward to delivering the other parts in the future.

Huge progress being made down in Castleforbes where we have received planning for a revised design to The Juno building, the cultural space within the wider Carriageworks BTR scheme. The Juno building is a cultural resource and a counterpoint to the masonry tower, with its lightweight frame forming the edge of a new public square. The revised planning includes a refined façade treatment, a new emphatic entrance, and extended clear span spaces with an increased floor to ceiling height. O’Mahony Pike have been working with Cork City Council to design temporary housing at Estuary Way, Mahon, utilising 3D volumetric modular off-site construction. 38 no. modules, each configured as an individual 2-bedroom house, are placed in pairs, around a central shared courtyard space. The modules are designed for convenient transport by road and it is intended that they can be moved repeatedly if required. The scheme layout has been carefully considered to allow for the infrastructure constructed as part of this development to support the future development of the site.
