This #throwbackthursday, we’re sharing a video of the Royal Canal Phase 2 Premium Cycle Route scheme, an urban regeneration project that delivered a critical piece of walking and cycling infrastructure for #dublin and demonstrated how brownfield sites can be imaginatively repurposed by community-led projects that drive lasting economic, social, environmental and cultural benefits. Opened two years ago this month, the project weaves together a 4-metre wide, 2-way cycle track, 2-metre wide footway, linear park, viewing plaza and 112-metre long seven-span, box girder viaduct spanning the Northern Line Railway and connecting Connolly Station with the Maynooth Railway Line. Roughan & O'Donovan was involved in the full project lifecycle from inception through to completion, including undertaking the options selection report in conjunction with Dublin City Council in 2012, and helping secure Part VIII planning approval for the scheme in 2015. We adopted a holistic approach to the planning of a project, assembling a multidisciplinary design team that included Grafton Architects, Blackwood Associates Conservation Architects, Cunnane Stratton Reynolds, Kevin Cleary & Associates, CRDS Ltd. and Jons Civil Engineering Company Ltd as contractor. 🚍Watch this video to find out how the Clontarf to City Centre Cycle and Bus Priority Project is transforming Dublin’s North East Inner City through the provision of segregated cycling facilities and bus priority infrastructure.🚴 The €62m scheme has been described by cycling campaigners as "matching up to cycling design standards seen in pioneering countries, such as Denmark and the Netherlands". It provides: + a one-way, kerb-protected, two-metre wide cycle track on each side of the road to keep cyclists completely segregated from motor traffic + bus stop islands to keep cyclists and buses apart at bus stops and provide for the ‘Dutch-style’ segregation of cyclists at major junctions + new pedestrian crossings along the route + significant upgrades to the public realm, including a new esplanade for cyclists, joggers and walkers in Fairview Park https://lnkd.in/e74wGdig Dublin City Council #sustainabletransport #publictransport #engineering #engineeringdesign #activetravel National Transport Authority

Delighted to have been involved in the delivery of the Dublin Port Tolka Estuary Greenway (Phase one), a scheme that has opened up stunning new views of Dublin Bay and all its natural wonders to pedestrians and cyclists. ROD led the scheme from planning through to construction, assembling a multidisciplinary design team that understood the environmental sensitivities of the project. All the works were constructed in a sensitive manner, reflecting the importance of the surrounding bay for wildlife and Dublin Bay’s designations as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), a Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds, and a UNESCO Biosphere. Our design team included ROD’s ecological and environmental teams, Redscape, Austen Associates and TTT Landscape Architects, Darmody and DMOD Architecture, Hugh Munro and James Wark M&E Consultants, Cundall and ThermaImage public lighting, and Byrne Ó Cléirigh COMAH specialists.
