Turning Teens Towards STEM

About us

Teen-Turn aims to influence course decision-making processes, inform participants on education and career options, and combat stereotypes by strategically changing how girls identify with STEM career environments through work placements and after school activities. As learning in the presence of female role models has been shown to impact girls’ self-image and confidence–encouraging them to see themselves in new ways and stimulate new interests–female company representatives mentor Teen-Turn participants, perpetuating interest and enthusiasm. More girls exploring and gaining an interest in STEM will lead to more women earning STEM qualifications, thus meeting a demand for skills that is currently outpacing supply. A technology economy is unsustainable, otherwise.

BSc Business Information Systems. Creativity meets Technology

Travelling truly does open the mind 🧠 ✈️ The previous month I was given the privilege to participate in the Erasmus + Youth Exchange with ANDCTR to understand grassroots participation in Craiova, Romania🇷🇴. Alongside my fellow Teen-Turn alum: Elana Monaghan, Essie Wuddah, Leona Egan and Sara O’Beirne we were able to engage in community development activities, connect with the locals and learn what it means to be active in our own localities. Getting to learn about the other incredible organisations and cultures from the European countries that were also taking part was one of the highlights of the trip. 🌎 🤩 I want to thank Teen-Turn for sponsoring such a valuable and unforgettable experience and Sarah Stefan for being huge help during this trip. 💪 I am very glad that through this project I have received a Youthpass certificate for active youth participation. 📝 ✅

Executive Business Support to the CEO at Dublin Bus

This month, I am excited to be taking on a new challenge: running my first marathon – the Dublin Marathon – alongside my dad (and coach), Stephen McCann. To add to the experience, we have decided to run in support of Teen-Turn, an organisation that does incredible work providing valuable opportunities and support for girls in STEM. Teen-Turn empowers teenage girls, particularly those from underserved communities, to explore hands-on STEM experiences. The goal? To help them envision futures in STEM fields and make informed decisions about their education and careers. From after-school programmes to work placements, mentoring, and alumnae career development, Teen-Turn currently supports over 1,500 girls on their journey from “Junior Cert to Job.” As a proud Teen-Turn volunteer for the past seven years, starting back in my first semester at University College Cork, I have been continually inspired by the incredible impact they make. We hope to raise funds to support this amazing work, so any donation - big or small - would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your support. Link to donate: https://lnkd.in/eEevq65Q

Teacher, Social Media Manager, PR, Website Dev at St. Patrick's Comprehensive School. Looking to connect our school with the local community.

This donation from Teen-Turn and Shopify has been life changing for our Girls in STEM Club who have access to powerful devices to work on in their afterschool club and even at home when needed. We see the impact of this technology every year in the club.

The importance of providing quality resources to students cannot be underestimated. Our Girls in STEM Club are so fortunate to have the support of Teen-Turn and it would not exist without them. One of the many ways they have supported us is with a donation of MacBooks from Shopify. Our girls can use these devices to research, code and develop skills while also working with mentors in STEM fields We are incredibly grateful for this support.

Another fantastic visit from Gillian Place today to talk to students in the school. It was especially heartening to see so many of our Teen-Turn girls attend and show an interest in the course too.

I had the absolute privilege to attend the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing championships with three super Teen-Turn young ladies. These girls have been working on a project that Katie pitched at the Technovation RPE in 2023 where she won the Junior Category! She was invited onto the Teen-Turn incubator program and was joined by Mary Lillibeth and Aoibheann Mangan and together on advancing to the Teen-Turn Accelerator they formed their company HerdSync! This wk as finalists in the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena they were one of only 9 companies to be awarded a “Certificate of Achievement in Innovation”! They were not only the youngest company there but they were the only all female founded company! It is super to have seen the project progress from an afterschool project to the company it is at now and the product they are developing!

As summer comes to an end, it's the perfect time to reflect on the incredible experiences we’ve had with our internship programmes this year. We were thrilled to partner with Teen-Turn, hosting two impactful programmes aimed at empowering young women with hands-on STEM experience and encouraging more women to pursue tech-focused qualifications and careers 🌟 First, we welcomed two third-level students as part of Teen-Turn’s Learn-to-Earn programme, giving them eight weeks of immersive, real-world experience in their area of study. They absolutely hit the ground running, gaining invaluable insights and making a genuine impact within the teams that they worked with. Next, we opened our doors to five secondary school students for a two-week internship, offering them a glimpse into the wide range of roles and opportunities within the tech world. Their curiosity and energy were infectious as they explored what a future in tech could look like. Throughout both programmes, our interns demonstrated creativity, enthusiasm, and a strong drive to develop new skills and explore their career interests. They grew both personally and professionally, and it was a privilege to be part of their journey. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made these programmes possible—from our dedicated team members who offered guidance and mentorship, to the interns who seized every opportunity to learn and grow. We are incredibly proud of what they achieved and can’t wait to see where their education and careers take them next. 🚀 🙌👩💻 #WomenInSTEM #Empowerment #Internships #TeenTurn #STEMCareers
