Last week, we were proud to join ports across Ireland in celebrating the fourth annual Irish Port Safety Week! In collaboration with the Port Authorities of Ireland and the Irish Port Safety Forum, this week was all about reinforcing safety awareness across our maritime community. Throughout the week, the Port of Cork hosted a range of hands-on events and invaluable training sessions, including maritime emergency care training and health, safety, and mental wellbeing talks. A highlight of the week was water safety responders training with the RNLI. A huge thank you to all our partners, teams, and participants for making Irish Port Safety Week a success. Let’s continue to strengthen our shared commitment to safety and support each other in creating a safer working environment for all.

It was a pleasure attending the British Irish Chamber of Commerce Conference and Dinner 2024 last night in Dublin. Creating a #SharedIreland approach and collaborating with Belfast Harbour is vital to the future of the Offshore Renewable Energy #ORE and #Cruise sectors. Chief Commercial Officer at PoCC, Conor Mowlds was delighted to meet with An Taoiseach Simon Harris, Dr. Theresa Donaldson, Chair of Belfast Harbour and Michael Robinson, Port Director at Belfast Harbour. #KeepingCorkConnected

Our Head of Port Engineering, Tim Murphy, and Environmental Manager, Jerome O'Sullivan, are currently in Le Harve, France, to attend the 19th GreenPort Congress. 🇫🇷♻️ The GreenPort Congress serves as a forum for the port community to exchange knowledge and explore the latest advancements in sustainable environmental practices. It offers ways to reduce their carbon foot print and be more sensitive to environmental considerations, both of which are vital to future success.

Day 4 of Irish Port Safety Week at the Port of Cork focused on life-saving skills! 🌊🚑 Today, some of our marine pool, launch crew, and pilots took part in a Maritime Immediate Emergency Care (MIEC) course. Learning how to respond quickly and effectively in an emergency is essential for keeping our port and maritime community safe. The course consisted of both theory and practical work on our pilot launch, Fáilte, as part of the course, it covered multiple maritime scenarios that our crews may face while at sea. Thanks to Grant Walkey and Trident for instructing it! #PortSafetyWeek

After a century of connection with the Port of Cork, we recently bid farewell to our esteemed colleague, Claire Neville, whose retirement marks the end of a remarkable family legacy. Claire’s grandfather, Michael Egan, served as a Board member of the Cork Harbour Commissioners from 1924-1927 and again from 1929-1946. Her father, Jim Egan, dedicated nearly five decades to the Port from 1929 to 1978. Claire has proudly continued this tradition, retiring after an extraordinary 47 years of dedicated service. She began her career in 1977 with the Engineers Department, then located on the Lower Glanmire Road, fondly known as “The Yard.” Her remarkable journey leaves an enduring legacy at the Port of Cork. In 1978, Claire was joined by her close friend Ann Conlon, and the two formed a lifelong bond. In 1996, both Claire and Ann transferred to the Finance "Rates" Department in the Custom House. Although the transition was met with some initial hesitation, they quickly came to love their new roles and forged lasting friendships with their colleagues. Ann retired just last year, but their friendship remains as strong as ever. Claire, it’s time to embrace the next exciting chapter and we hope your days ahead will be filled with happiness, health, and new adventures. Wishing you all the best as you embark on this well-deserved journey!

The Port of Cork Company and Ports of Indiana have signed an MoU to explore the development of an inaugural Ireland-to-Indiana express container shipping service and to collaborate on economic, environmental, and technology initiatives. 🇮🇪🤝🇺🇸   This would connect Cork with the only container service transporting entirely on water to the Chicago market, providing access to Cork via rail network to major logistics hubs on both the East and West Coasts of the United States. This development represents a strategic opportunity for Ireland to expand its trade presence in the U.S., unlocking significant potential economic benefits for the Irish economy.   Ireland is currently Indiana’s top importer, with 2023 shipments totalling €19.3 billion ($20.9 billion). The main products traded between the both regions are pharmaceuticals and organic chemicals, which are key exports for Ireland and major imports for Indiana, home to global pharma giant Eli Lilly and Company.   The MoU was signed by representatives from both Cork and Indiana, including the Governor of Indiana, Eric Holcomb, and Indiana Secretary of Commerce, David Rosenberg, at a ceremony in Hayfield Manor yesterday.   We look forward to welcoming the delegation from Indiana back to Cork in the future! Port Safety Week continued at the Port of Cork this morning, with a focus on sharpening our driving and machinery operator skills! 🏗️ 🚛 This exercise offers desk-based staff at the port an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the work involved in operating heavy cargo handling equipment. Thanks to The Virtual Driving Hub, our team got hands-on experience with a virtual driving simulator to develop their knowledge. #PortSafetyWeek

Really excited about the potential for Cork and the wider region as we look to explore new routes to the United States.

Today, Ports of Indiana and Port of Cork Company Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen trade, economic and academic cooperation between Indiana and Ireland. Through this new partnership, the two ports commit to exploring the feasibility of a new shipping connection between Cork, Ireland and Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor in northwest Indiana, supporting the port’s new container initiative that will create an international sea cargo container terminal.   Indiana now shares direct links with Ireland via flight and cargo ship! 🛫 🚢 #indiana #ireland #trade #shipping
