As India amasses its variable renewable energy base and moves towards green energy to adopt to climate change, the need for grid stability and inertia management will become an important aspect to consider. ANDRITZ is prepared to contribute to this important development with its standardized cylindrical rotor design solution as well as tailor-made salient pole synchronous condensers for the Indian National Grid. Recently, ANDRITZ was a sponsor at the first TransTech India 2024 to showcase its technological prowess and capability for Synchronous Condensers through its two state-of-the-art manufacturing bases in India, thereby aligning with “Make in India”. It was wonderful to attend the event, engage in meaningful conversations about synchronous condensers, and discuss the importance of grid stabilization. #andritz #SynchronousCondensers #renewableenergy #ForTheChange #energy #india

⚡Boosting renewable energy 🔋: ANDRITZ to upgrade Vamma hydropower plant in Norway GRAZ/VIENNA, OCTOBER 9, 2024. Norway’s largest run-of-river hydropower plant, Vamma, will undergo a major modernization: Norwegian utility Hafslund has selected international technology group ANDRITZ to upgrade one of the plant’s turbine-generator units. This will improve the performance and efficiency of Vamma’s unit 11, reinforcing the plant’s role as a key contributor to Norway’s renewable energy sector. The project will increase the unit’s capacity by 22%, from 100 MW to 122 MW. It includes dismantling, reassembly, testing and commissioning, as well as model testing and supply of new components. The scope of supply includes a new oil-free Kaplan runner with a water-filled hub, which will not only improve efficiency but also contribute to the environmental sustainability of the plant. With a diameter of 7,300 mm, it will be one of the largest runners installed in Norway. ANDRITZ will also supply a new turbine governor and stator, which will be assembled on site. On-site assembly of the new stator is scheduled for the first half of 2026. Commissioning of the fully upgraded Vamma 11 unit is expected in early 2028. Owned by Hafslund, one of Norway’s leading power producers, Vamma is equipped with 12 turbine-generator units, including 10 Francis and two large Kaplan turbines. It has a total installed capacity of 343 MW and supplies an average of 1,580 GWh of electricity per year. “This project is a milestone in our close partnership with Hafslund. By upgrading the Vamma 11 unit, we’re not only boosting its efficiency and capacity, but also extending its operating life to ensure that it continues to support the country's ambitious renewable energy targets,” said Kjetil Toverud, Managing Director of ANDRITZ Hydropower in Norway. #ANDRITZ #Hydropower #RenewableEnergy #GrowthThatMatters #Norway #Vamma #PressRelease

⚡Volatile renewables: ANDRITZ enhances Brazilian grid stability with synchronous condensers⚡ GRAZ, SEPTEMBER 25, 2024. New regulatory requirements and a cleaner, more diversified energy mix pose new challenges for grid operators tasked with maintaining a stable power supply. Synchronous condensers have positioned themselves as a reliable, proven, cost-effective and smart solution for these issues, and are bolstering the grid resilience which is negatively impacted by wind and solar power plants worldwide. International technology group ANDRITZ has signed two contracts to supply new synchronous condenser systems to Brazil. Both projects include the supply of a 330 MVAr synchronous condenser. The installation of these systems is an important step towards balancing and stabilizing the Brazilian power system, improving its efficiency, and ensuring a more reliable power supply for the future. One will support the transmission lines between Bahia and Minas Gerais, and the other will support the Ceará Crateús region. “We are immensely proud of the trust our clients have placed in us,” said Sérgio Gomes, Sales Director of ANDRITZ Hydropower in Brazil. “These contracts underscore our strong presence in the market and our ability to deliver cutting-edge, sustainable solutions. Our manufacturing hub in Araraquara, São Paulo, plays a central role in this success, producing high-quality synchronous condensers that meet the demanding requirements of modern power grids.” ANDRITZ’s scope of supply includes one 330 MVAr synchronous condenser for each project, complete with mechanical and electrical auxiliaries, automation, protection, a step-up transformer, field assembly services, and commissioning for both systems. As Brazil navigates its energy transition, ANDRITZ is committed to delivering innovative solutions that contribute to the development of a cleaner, more resilient power grid. #Andritz #SynCon #SynchronousCondenser #Brazil #RenewableEnergy
