Catalysing achievement of Sustainable Development Goals through co-creation of Digital Public Infrastructure

About us

Established in 2003 by Nandan Nilekani and Srikanth Nadhamuni , eGov Foundation is a philanthropic mission that exists to improve the ease of living for citizens. Our focus areas are urban, health, sanitation and public finance management. Our mission is to make sure that everyone can access services from their local governments with ease and transparency. We do this through our core offering DIGIT (Digital Infrastructure for Governance, Impact and Transformation), which is a digital public good. In other words, it is an open, interoperable free-to-use platform that offers solutions for citizens, first mile employees, administrators, commercial players and policy makers. It is made available to the federal government, states & cities for them to create programs and solutions for their contexts, in keeping with the federal structure of urban governance in India. DIGIT is also offered to commercial players, so that they can leverage it to build solutions and deliver programs working with governments. In run-time this translates into states, cities and commercials players using the building blocks from DIGIT to tailor solutions and programs that meet their needs and innovating on top of it to solve emerging problems. Over the last 20 years, eGov has partnered with more than over 3 countries, 2600 towns and cities in 16 states across India, and more than 16 crore citizens have benefited from its platform.

Conducted a three-day training and workshop (from 24 Oct 2024) for the NIUA team, focusing on the techno-functional understanding required for implementing finance and accounts reforms in #urbangovernance as part of a digital transformation initiative. The workshop included in-depth discussions and recommendations on solution approaches for various queries and use cases presented by states during NIUAs proposals for UPYOG adoption. Key use cases examined included integration with Public Financial Management (PFM) systems, State #Treasury systems, and specific scheme systems, such as #MUKTA, to streamline financial system connectivity. The training involved intensive discussions and whiteboard sessions, covering everything from foundational ledger entry concepts to strategic solution approaches. The three-day workshop went beyond foundational accounting concepts, delving into strategies for migrating from cash-based to accrual-based accounting, including Budget definition in the new approach. It covered practical approaches for phased implementation, ensuring a smooth transition that aligns with ongoing digital transformation efforts. Through a combination of interactive sessions and tailored guidance, participants explored best practices to synchronize accounting reforms with digital advancements, promoting a sustainable, future-ready financial system. The NIUA team’s hospitality was truly heartwarming, making the experience special. Thank you NIUA. Forum, I’d be glad to discuss any use cases or solution approaches you might have to address in Municipal Finance. Please feel free to write back or message anytime. #FinanceTransformation #UrbanDevelopment #DigitalGovernance #NUDM #NIUA #UrbanTransformation Smart Cities Mission | eGov Foundation | Viraj Tyagi | Chandar Muthukrishnan | Venu Lakshman | Manpreet Singh | Pankaj Sharma | Jyotish Jagannivasan |Dr. Bimal Kumar (Ph.D) | Kunal Gaurav | Kirti Saxena | Janaagraha | Elzan Mathew | Aveek De | Pradeep Kumar C M | Sathish P | Prashanth Chandramouleeswaran | Manish Srivastava | Prabhat Kumar | Nirbhay Singh | Sankar panchaksharam | Allvy | SELCO Foundation | Tekdi Technologies |

There is growing evidence that people with disabilities comprise between 5-8% of the Indian population (around 55 – 90 million individuals). Source: Minsitry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, India   Despite existing legal frameworks, many still face significant challenges in accessing safe and inclusive sanitation facilities. This was a core focus of the recent National Consultation on Disability Inclusive Sanitation in India by CREA, which brought together over 70 stakeholders from diverse sectors to address these gaps. eGov had the privilege of joining this conversation to share our insights and explore opportunities to make #WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) systems more inclusive. The discussions shed light on critical areas such as the need for data disaggregation, interoperability across ministries, and accessible infrastructure that aligns with India’s Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. How can eGov bridge the digital divide and build a more inclusive space? • The importance of universal design principles to make public sanitation spaces accessible. • Creating platforms for grievances and feedback that connect PwDs directly to local authorities. • Leveraging digital tools to empower PwDs and amplify their voices. What’s next for eGov: We’re eager to expand into this new domain, using DIGIT DPG to fortify the #TechforGood space. By designing accessible platforms, enhancing data collection capabilities, and partnering with disability rights organizations, we aim to ensure our solutions drive real change. Together, we would be eager to contribute to systems that aim to reimagine systems that serve everyone with dignity and respect. #SafeSanitationForAll #DigitalInclusion #sdg10 Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) | Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GOI | NFSSM Alliance Soumya Tiwari | Padma Bhate-Deosthali | Seema Jain | Shrija S Rao | Aanchal Dahima | Abhisek Rout

Digital Public Infrastructure promises to transform essential public services, making them more accessible, inclusive, and fostering smoother operations between government departments and stakeholders. An e-governance model exemplifying this success is Odisha's SUJOG platform (Sustainable Urban Services in a Jiffy by Odisha Government). Through SUJOG-FSSM, the platform is including every stakeholder of the sanitation value chain, right from citizens to FSTP operators, to avail and track sanitation services in a timely and efficient manner. India's pioneering advancements in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) are not only transforming its own economy but are also shaping a global blueprint for progress that other countries can follow. Defined by the government as a set of open, standardized, and interoperable digital tools, DPI facilitates access to economic opportunities and services through its three key pillars - secure digital identity, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and data exchange.   India's successful implementation of this robust and inclusive digital ecosystem is empowering individuals around the world through interoperability and inclusivity.   Our co-chair, Bill Gates, shares his thoughts on how DPI is transforming lives.   Visit https://lnkd.in/gzrEhG6E to learn more.   #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #Progress #DPI

"What works at scale is not the same as scaling what works." This insight stood out during a recent closed-door event where we deep-dived into the future of DPIs. The workshop brought together diverse stakeholders, ranging from government officials and private sector leaders to multilateral organisations and academia. The goal? To break down silos and create honest, forward-looking conversations on how we can ensure that DPIs are sustainable, accessible, and equitable for everyone. Key themes discussed: Day 1: Focused on educating stakeholders new to the #DPI space, highlighting its potential and the role of public service delivery. Day 2: A more targeted discussion on the future of DPI, bringing in voices from those already within the ecosystem to explore funding models, sustainability, and innovation pathways. The event underscored the need to bring together various perspectives—from policy to market players—to chart a path forward for inclusive DPI. As a team, we had the opportunity to share how eGov’s work in public service delivery aligns with these goals, emphasising our commitment to building solutions that can scale equitably. This workshop marked a step forward for us as we continue to expand into new domains, using our digital solutions to empower communities and support public service initiatives across health, governance, and water management. Such collaborative dialogues inspire us to continually innovate, ensuring that the future of DPI is driven by meaningful impact and tangible benefits for communities. #techforgood #sustainability #inclusivity EkStep Foundation | Carnegie India | Pramod Varma | Rudra Chaudhuri | Shankar Maruwada | Gautham Ravichander | Nita Tyagi Vibhor Bansal | Anumita Raj

On World Habitat Day, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) module developed on the Urban Platform for deliverY of Online Governance (#UPYOG) by the National Urban Digital Mission NUDM-NIUA. UPYOG, an open-source platform, enhances collaboration among stakeholders to deliver reliable citizen services. The FSM module is designed as a digital public infrastructure (DPI) to tackle issues like the broken chain of waste management and the lack of verifiable data, and resulting in improved sanitation systems. By generating real-time data, FSM will provide visibility into the sanitation value chain, empowering individuals, communities, businesses, and government bodies to co-create innovative FSM solutions. #NationalUrbanDigitalMission #NUDM #FaecalSludgeManagement #FSM #EffectiveMonitoring #OpenSource #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #Desludging #Sanitation #SwachhBharatMission Smart Cities Mission | eGov Foundation | Manpreet Singh | Manish Sharma | Pankaj Sharma | Jyotish Jagannivasan | Aparajita Dubey | Shelika Arora | Rahul Sharma | Jiteshwar Pandey | Avi Chhabra | Keshav Kumar | Abhijeet Verma | Vardan Mehrotra | Nukul Sodhi | Pulkit Acharya | Gautami Ghumatkar | Shafeeq Ahmed | Dr. Bimal Kumar (Ph.D) | Sushant Anand | Mitali Singh | Atul Sharma | Madhavi Nikose | Vijyendra Singh Niranjan | Shivank Shukla | Sriranjan Srivastava | Manvi Raheja | Mallika Nambiar | Deepika Sharma | khalid rashid | Nikhil Singh | Kunal Gaurav | Sourabh Yadav | Devanshu Jain | Manya Jain | Siddharth Kashyap

Elevating public services requires both innovation and collaboration—bringing together diverse minds and leveraging reusable, modular, adaptable building blocks to create solutions that leave no one behind. The DPG Dialogues, hosted by Code for GovTech (C4GT) Samagra | Transforming Governance last week, brought together people focused on how Digital Public Goods (#DPGs) can address real-world challenges. Young technologists and enthusiasts showcased their contributions to live projects, using DPGs to drive innovation in open-source solutions, while being guided by mentorship from industry leaders. One of the key insights from the event was the integration of #AI with #DPI, which can democratize access to advanced technologies, offering tangible solutions in health, public safety, and beyond. As part of the panel on "Leveraging E-governance for Effective Service Delivery", I had the opportunity to hear from experts Viswanathan RavichandranAniket Doegar Ujjwal Relan, and Nitin Kashyap while also share insights into eGov Foundation’s journey and our trust in DPGs like DIGIT DPG to drive citizen-centric public service delivery. How governments are harnessing the modular, reusable, and scalable building blocks of DIGIT to transform social benefit delivery, empowering communities to better meet their needs. The strength of DPGs lies in the grounding principles of modularity, reusability, and adaptability, enabling to scale solutions—not just from one city to another—but across entirely different contexts, whether local governance, health, water, sanitation, social benefits, education, or justice. As we reflect on the dialogue and the road ahead it's clear that real change doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens when governments, communities, and innovators come together. As individuals, we all access public services almost daily, and many of us have experienced the challenges of fragmented systems. DPGs hold the potential to change this. It's about putting the building blocks together —both in terms of technology and expertise—to create solutions that evolve with citizens' needs. And, as we look to the future, the possibilities are endless. It’s the youth of today, with their fresh perspectives and fearless drive, who will weave innovation and collaboration into the fabric of tomorrow! Hearing Dr. R.S. Sharma share his journey with Aadhaar and his vision for DPGs given his pivotal role in India’s digital revolution seemed to be the perfect way to wrap up the day :) #DPGDialogues #C4GT2024

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at eGov Foundation where I gained hands-on experience in two key areas: Database Optimization: I worked on making databases more efficient, focusing on improving performance and scalability to handle large data volumes with ease. Spring WebFlux vs. Spring Boot: I explored the advantages and disadvantages of Spring WebFlux and Spring Boot for reactive and traditional application development. This deep dive helped me understand how each framework excels in different use cases, giving me a broader perspective on building scalable web applications. This internship was a fantastic learning experience, and I'm grateful for the support from my mentors Manish Srivastava and Rishabh Jain at eGov Foundation. Looking forward to applying these skills in future projects!
