🌐As the Global Plastic Treaty is being discussed across the globe, here is a little about the basic categories of livelihoods attached to the value chain of recycling. However, the categories are not exhaustive and it varies from particular types of waste to different geographies. We will cover most of them in our upcoming posts. #handsonwaste

Hands on Waste kicked off with #wastetalks to acknowledge the voices and the work of the waste workers and we are back with the series. Meet Vittal and Rekha from Malad East in Mumbai. They are currently processing waste from more than 180 households. Rekha is involved in collecting waste from each household, while Vittal takes care of segregation and composting. Apart from the residential area, they have recently started managing five Aerobins (to make compost out of wet waste) in a park area. The dry waste is mostly sorted and transported by another vehicle. The power of recognition and respect for their valuable work shows up as big, graceful smiles on their faces. The whole initiative is supported by the Indian Pollution Control Association.

The term of the week: Material Recovery Facilities or MRFs A dedicated site for sorting and processing waste, which then becomes a resource for another industry.♻ Some of these facilities are incorporating automated methods to make the process more seamless. It is important to highlight here the crucial role of the waste workers who collect, sort and find value in the waste generated by the citizens.💪 #wasteworkiswork #circulareconomy #ecovocab #termoftheweek

#ecovocab #weeklydigest EPR credits are like an incentive structure that rewards companies for taking accountability for the waste generated by their products. To make this mechanism work, it is necessary to have an infrastructure for collecting, sorting, and recycling the end products. On the brighter side, an industry once viewed as 'unprofessional' now has a chance to be innovative and create jobs. The EPR market is evolving and will only grow from here, so it's time to dive deeper into it. Keep following Hands on Waste for more information.
