Sustainability has become a cornerstone of the modern perfumery industry, reflecting a growing awareness of the environmental and social impacts of ingredient sourcing. At the World Perfumery Congress, sustainability was a recurring theme, with numerous discussions and presentations highlighting the importance of ethical and sustainable practices in creating high-quality fragrances. One of the key aspects of sustainability in perfumery is ensuring fair pricing for farmers and producers of natural ingredients. I had a detailed discussion with Filip Lissicharov from Enio Bonchev, Bulgaria where we talked about the steps we can take towards fair pricing & sustainability in perfumery. The cultivation and harvesting of essential oils, resins, and other raw materials often occur in regions where the produce happens and often is the primary livelihood. By providing fair compensation, the industry can support these communities and ensure the sustainability of their practices. This not only helps in maintaining a stable supply of high-quality ingredients but also promotes social equity and economic development. I was particularly pleased to see a strong presence of natural ingredient providers from India, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Australia and Bulgaria. These regions are known for their rich biodiversity and traditional expertise in cultivating aromatic plants. Their participation in the congress underscored the global effort to promote sustainable and ethical sourcing practices. In addition to fair pricing, sustainability in perfumery also involves the careful management of natural resources. Ingredients such as sandalwood, which could be harvested to the point of endangerment, are protected extensively, especially in India. Sustainable cultivation practices, including reforestation projects and controlled harvesting methods, are essential to protect these precious resources. Working with synthetic molecules is also important for ingredients derived from animals, such as musk, ambergris, and civet, or those that are protected, like sandalwood. The ethical and environmental concerns associated with these materials have led to the creation of synthetic alternatives that mimic their scent profiles without the need for animal exploitation or further depletion of natural resources. This approach not only addresses ethical concerns but also ensures a consistent and reliable supply of these valuable scent components. What according to you could be some of the important concerns that perfumers should address for a sweeter future? Embracing Honesty: The Key to Authentic Customer Connections Have you ever wondered if addressing the elephant in the room could actually boost your brand? At ISAK Fragrances, we decided to find out. Our best-seller, First Rain, often flies off the shelves, but some of you have noted that it doesn’t last as long as our other products. Instead of hiding behind marketing jargon, we chose transparency. Our team was initially hesitant, worrying it might diminish the product’s appeal. But we went ahead with the authentic answer, and it paid off. In our recent video, we talked openly about why First Rain, crafted with natural ingredients, may not last as long as other synthetic-heavy perfumes and why is it often sold out. The response was incredible! Our audience loved the honesty, and it boosted the trust in the brand. This reminded me of Patagonia's "Don't Buy This Jacket" campaign, where they highlighted the environmental impact of their products, urging customers to think twice before purchasing. It seemed counterintuitive, but it built massive trust and loyalty. 💬 What do you think about transparent marketing? Have you had similar experiences where honesty led to unexpected positive results? Share your stories and let’s chat!
