The climate crisis needs urgent, innovative and collaborative action more than ever before. Over the last three years, Rainmatter Foundation’s work has been around supporting positive climate action, a healthier environment, and the livelihoods associated with them. Our approach at the foundation has evolved to build deeper, collaborative, intersectional, immediate and landscape-rooted solutions to the climate problem. 🌿 We work on building lasting, meaningful partnerships in the climate ecosystem and supporting and collaborating with organisations, individuals and causes working in different areas of an entire spectrum through grants, fellowships and investments. If you are an individual or organisation who is working towards solving for the climate crisis, write to us at info@rainmatter.org. About us
Rainmatter Climate Foundation is a Zerodha-sponsored initiative focused on fostering and assisting ideas that help preserve and regenerate ecosystems. We believe that this needs both direct interventions as well as the enablement of larger platforms that involve a mainstream understanding of the need and benefits of these efforts while also scaling participation in them beyond the philanthropic efforts of a few. Indeed we do not see this as charity; it is an investment into our own future and wellbeing. Amongst our core beliefs is that moving to a green economy and creating green jobs is an essential part of the changes needed for a better ecology. We also think that this needs to happen in a distributed fashion across geographies, with value and job creation everywhere and not being limited to a few urban centres. Reversing both migration and concentration of value, wealth and resources are a major need towards this and will also need a strengthening of public goods and services across India. Rainmatter Climate Foundation is uniquely positioned to influence these efforts in terms of the market and technology skills and partnerships we bring to the table. Additionally, we are committing a $100mn fund towards this over the coming few years. This will be disbursed as grants and funding for projects in the above directions that become replicable models. It will also be used for the creation of open, collaborative platforms that cross-pollinate and scale many good ideas and successful experiments and help create a green economy everywhere. This includes our commitments to funding open-source efforts that help create projects and platforms for climate change and related efforts. Rainmatter Foundation is also incubating and investing in entrepreneurship that helps with these directions and helps move towards a greener, more equitable, and lower footprint economy.

The planet’s resources are finite. To make sure that we don’t run out of these resources, we have to be better planners of how we produce, consume and dispose of things. This effort needs to be driven by the society at large - people, governments as well as companies/corporations. 🤝 India is going through a shift from being a linear economy to a circular one owing to factors like policy measures, corporate initiatives, technological advancements and public participation. ✅ Developing a strong ecosystem will require conscious calls to be taken by the producers in adopting extended producer responsibility (EPR) which will be instrumental in holding them accountable for the environmental impact of what they produce. Producing durable products, practising closed-loop recycling, introducing buyback programmes and incentivizing them, and minimising waste generation during the production process are a few other things that will contribute to strengthening the circular economy. ♻️ While there are challenges like developing a strong ecosystem to support a circular economy and the change in mindset of the larger population, this shift can bring significant economic and environmental benefits. As a country that is rapidly developing, our steps towards developing a circular economy will make room for growth with long-term prosperity. 🤎💚 #circulareconomy #recyle #3Rs #reuse #reduce #mindfulproduction #environmentalresponsibility

Being mindful of what we consume and where our products come from, is an important step that all of us could take to ensure reduced stress on the natural resources and the environment around us. 🌏 At the Rainmatter Foundation, one of the key focus areas of the Materials thesis is to work along with partners who are enabling the transition from a linear to a circular economy. This transition has multiple factors associated with it like - rethinking the production process and how it can be more sustainable, encouraging mindful consumption and popularising the idea of ‘reuse’ and ‘repair’. The focus is on strengthening and expanding all the elements that will allow for this transition at scale. 📈 If you are an individual/organisation/collective working on solving the climate crisis from a materials lens, write to us at info@rainmatter.org. Our team will review your email and connect with you if your work aligns with our current goals. 📩 Mandeep Pasricha #energyandmaterials #mindfulconsumption #ecosystemthinking #rainmatterfoundation

Most products/consumables today have a resource and energy-intensive value chain. ⛓️💥 Let’s take the example of textiles. 👔 They go through an extremely energy-intensive process starting from crop production, processing, weaving, transportation, and finally being sold to us. This entire process and supply chain that the fashion industry follows accounts for close to 1.2 billion tonnes of GHG emissions globally which is equivalent to 10% of total GHG emissions (The Price of Fast Fashion Report, Nature Climate Change). Several other industries that produce many of our everyday consumption products derive a big part of their energy needs from thermal power sources as well. ⚡ While we must each define for ourselves our idea of “enough”, we can ask ourselves a few questions before every purchase- do we actually need it? Is there a sustainable alternative that can be purchased? Can the purpose of this purchase be swapped with a close alternative that we already have in our homes? ♻️ Before disposing of something, asking ourselves if the product has been used to its full potential or can be recycled/ repaired, should become a practice. 🤝 #mindfulconsumption #festivebuying #rainmatterfoundation #climateaction #energyandmaterials #materialconsumption

Did you know that India generates over 62 million tonnes of waste each year, but only 75-80% gets collected? Or that India produces 7,793 kilotonnes of textile waste annually, which is 8.5% of the world’s total. Imagine the potential impact if every city adopted innovative and sustainable waste management practices! Socratus Foundation for Collective Wisdom along with ClimateRISE Alliance are putting together a Compendium of Good Practices in Solid Waste Management to showcase inspiring examples of how municipalities, ULBs, enterprises, and communities are transforming waste management across India, and we’d like you to contribute! From landfill remediation to resource recovery initiatives, community mobilization and inventive reuse measures, the compendium will highlight solutions that have made a measurable difference. If you’ve helped implement or know of a breakthrough project under the following topics we invite you to share your success story with us: 1. Citizenship and Public Problem Solving 2. Building Enabling Ecosystems 3. Flourishing and Equitable Cities 4. Adopting a Climate Lens Help us spread the word about what works, and contribute to building a cleaner, more sustainable India! Please submit your case study through this link: https://lnkd.in/d9vbF2tc Our concept note carries more information on the submissions we are looking to receive, and you can write to ansila@socratus.org for any further queries. Submit your practices and stories by 10 November. Let’s make an impact, together. Every festive season, there are millions of gifts being exchanged not only by individuals but also by businesses as a mark of goodwill. While our intentions are good, the ecological footprint of a gift box can be quite high. The gift box is most likely manufactured in one location and then shipped to faraway places, going through different logistic hubs. Every step in this leaves a carbon footprint, coupled with the waste generated from the gift packaging. 🎁 This festive season, instead of stressing our limited resources further, can we try and give back to the earth? 🌍 If you are the leader of an organisation, this is a great time to showcase your thought leadership and influence the decisions made around corporate gifting. Let’s encourage each other to choose better. 🤝 #rainmatterfoundation #nocorporategifting #festiveseason #wastemanagement #mindfulconsumption

How did you score? We are rooting for a 4/4. 💯 A big part of the energy that we consume today is derived from burning coal in thermal power plants, and thermal power accounts for close to 75% of total power generation. This contributes to environmental pollution and needless to say, mining coal indiscriminately contributes to more ecological damage. While the entire society is looking forward to transitioning to renewable sources of energy, it is equally important for us to make conscious choices to ensure that the demand side is informed by better consumption habits. ⚡ These are just a few of the things that we can practise at home. Let us know in the comments what you do in your daily life to use energy mindfully. 💬 #rainmatterfoundation #energysavingathome #energysaving #renewable
