The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy
Chi siamo
The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy. The CMCC: - Integrates all studies on climate change and adaptation/mitigation policies - Promotes collaboration and synergy with international organisations, policy makers, and industry - Provides technical-scientific support to the institutions involved in the negotiation and international cooperation activities. CMCC produces thorough studies regarding climate variability, causes, and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations based on global models of Earth systems and regional models, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. CMCC's research assures the maintenance of highly reliable products and instruments, which are made available to the scientific community and to further studies on climate science and climate change impacts. CMCC maintains, checks, and develops numeric model simulations, which are used to study the effects of climate change on the following areas: economy, agriculture, coastal areas, marine and land environment, hydrogeological cycle, carbon cycle and human health.

In the absence of climate policy, the Italian #tourism sector will face dire consequences, with cities such as Rome facing a potential loss of hundreds of millions of euros per year in 2050. A new CMCC study looks at how tourism in italian cities will be impacted under different climate change scenarios by looking at the relationship between tourism supply at the Italian Municipal level and climate quality, proxied by the “Holiday Climate Index” from Copernicus, which is an indicator of climate quality for tourism activities. “Since the early 1980s, the Mediterranean Sea has been warming at approximately 0.4°C per decade, which is faster than the global ocean average. This warming is leading to more frequent and severe marine heatwaves, especially in the last 20 years.” "Each degree Celsius increase in atmospheric temperature leads to an extra 7% more water vapor contained in the atmosphere, which is then released in the form of precipitation" CCMC researchers Giulia Bonino and Leone Cavicchia shared their research on temperature rising in the Mediterranean area and the challenges posed by extreme events on a recent #ClimateForesight piece ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/e2SVWj-E Their comments are also featured in a Corriere della Sera article about extreme events in the Mediterranean, in the aftermath of the Valencia flooding.
