At Cairo Water Week, UNDP Egypt Resident Representative, Alessandro Fracassetti, spoke on the panel "Innovation & Financing Resilient Solutions for Water Security". The discussion focused on the urgent water challenges exacerbated by #climatechange. Key insights included: 🌍 Climate Impact: With 80% of climate impacts tied to water, this issue needs immediate attention. By 2050, water scarcity could cost the region 14% of its GDP. 💧Financing gap: Despite the urgent need for sustainable water solutions, only a small proportion of global infrastructure funding goes towards water. 🔧 Technology and innovation: Current water technologies often have their limitations, but new solutions are essential for resilience. Scaling these innovations requires strong partnerships and significant investment. 🌱 UNDP's AWARE initiative: Launched at COP27, the AWARE initiative promotes cooperation on water as a key climate change adaptation strategy, focusing on accessible, cost-effective water solutions and addressing the water-food crisis. Looking to the future, UNDP Egypt is committed to strengthening cross-sector partnerships to advance innovative technologies for water management. By focusing on the water- food- energy nexus, we can advance a transformative climate agenda and secure a sustainable future. At Cairo Water Week , RR Alessandro Fracassetti discussed innovative water solutions amid climate challenges, highlighting UNDP Egypt's AWARE initiative and the need for new technologies, partnerships and investments to tackle water scarcity and promote sustainable management.

وقع برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي وألمانيا اتفاقية لتخصيص 5 ملايين يورو لتوسيع جهود الاستجابة الطارئة بشكل عاجل لمعالجة أزمة إدارة النفايات الصلبة في قطاع #غزة يهدف المشروع إلى التخفيف من التأثيرات المباشرة لأزمة النفايات من خلال إعطاء الأولوية لجمع النفايات الأساسية والتخلص الآمن من المواد الخطرة واستئناف خدمات إدارة النفايات لمنع المزيد من العواقب الكارثية لقد أدى الصراع المستمر إلى انهيار كامل لنظام إدارة النفايات الصلبة في غزة. وفي ظل عدم القدرة على الوصول إلى مكبات النفايات الصحية الرئيسية، تتراكم النفايات في أكثر من 141 موقعًا مؤقتًا لإلقاء النفايات حيث يتنقل النازحون داخليًا من مكان إلى آخر بحثًا عن ملجأ. ويشكل هذا الوضع مخاطر جسيمة على الصحة العامة والبيئة وكرامة المجتمعات المتضررة تفاقم هذه الأزمة بشكل خاص بسبب الاحتياجات الإنسانية الوشيكة لموسم الشتاء حيث يوجد 21 موقعًا لإلقاء النفايات في مناطق معرضة للفيضانات UNDP Palestinian and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) have signed an agreement to allocate EUR 5 million to urgently expand emergency response efforts addressing the solid waste management crisis in the #Gaza Strip The project aims to alleviate immediate impacts of the waste crisis by prioritizing essential waste collection, the safe disposal of hazardous materials, and the resumption of waste management services to prevent further catastrophic consequences The ongoing conflict has led to the complete collapse of Gaza’s solid waste management system. With no access to the two primary sanitary landfills, waste is accumulating at over 141 temporary dumping sites as internally displaced persons (IDPs) move from place to place seeking refuge. 📢 This Sunday, as part of #Tax4SDGs, we launched a Capacity Building Training on the Tax Auditing of State-Owned Entities (SOEs) (the “Training”) with UNDP Egypt Deputy Resident Representative Ghimar Deeb, Head of the Egyptian Tax Authority Dr. Rasha Abdelaal, Head of Policy and Partnerships Reham Youssef, and, the National Tax for SDGs Coordinator Aya Fasih. As part of the capacity-building support offered to the Egyptian Tax Authority under the #Tax4SDGs initiative, this Training has been devised in response to recent legislative amendments that have cancelled tax exemptions previously enjoyed by SOEs. UNDP’s #Tax4SDGs initiative was launched under the Sustainable Finance Hub in 2022 with the objective of strengthening capacities within tax administrations and assisting governments in better aligning tax policies with the #SDGs.This stems from the vision that taxes can play a critical role in addressing economic challenges and promoting sustainable development while serving as a sustainable source of revenue for developing countries.
