About us
ISAAA AfriCenter is committed to achieving agricultural transformation and fostering a healthier planet for future generations in Africa. Our vision and mission statements form the foundation of our strategy to contribute to the achievement of select Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union Agenda 2063. We capitalize on our strengths and leverage on our existing partnerships and collaborations to achieve these goals. Specifically, our focus is on SDG 2, 3, 7 and 18 on Zero Hunger, Health and Well being, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Partnerships respectively. These SDGs align with the Agenda 2063’s goals to promote sustainable agriculture and food security, and to address environment sustainability and climate change. We contribute to the realization of these goals by creating an enabling environment for bio-innovations and One Health practice through effective science communication, convening multidisciplinary actors and forming strategic alliances with like-minded partners.

So, then, what is One Health❔ What is the One Health situation in Africa? What are the opportunities in One Health in the continent? What are the gaps? What do our scientists need to do? What does everyone else need to do? What... Dr Maurice Karani, a PhD student at the University of Liverpool and fellow at ILRI- supported by OHRECA- and Ms Hannah Wanjiku, a Research Management Officer at Gertrude's Hospital and Gertrude's Hospital Foundation discuss, on The Africa Science Dialogue podcast 🎙️, the gap between research output and policy and practice in One Health. They also highlight specific practical One Health interventions and success stories including plans for One Health Day and World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week. The 76th Edition of The DrumBeat 📰 is out, with a collection of stories you will certainly love to read. It focuses on the power of learning—how cross-continental insights shape our approaches to the future of agriculture, biodiversity, and policy-making. Our featured video takes us to Argentina, where the Feed the Future Striga Smart Sorghum for Africa (SSSfA) project team embarked on an educational journey to explore genome editing innovation up close. Our story of the month highlights the transformative experience of Edna Macharia, a Program officer at ISAAA Africenter, who navigated global negotiations in Cali, Colombia. "As I embarked on the 24-hour journey from Kenya to Cali, Colombia, for the UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP16), I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety," writes Edna Macharia, Program Officer at ISAAA Africenter. "It was my first experience at such a massive global event, and I worried I might get lost in the whirlwind of activity and importance surrounding the conference." https://lnkd.in/d58CycKM

In our latest podcast, we hosted two amazing young scientists, Fatma Mohamed Omar, a researcher in biotechnology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics who is also a a Research and Teaching Assistant at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Daniel Omote, a biotechnology student who is working with International Potato Center (CIP) as a biotech consultant. The discussion, titled Youth and Science: Living the Dream to Transform Africa, centered around the place of youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa. We explored what needs to be done to encourage the next generation of scientists, especially at a time when this is greatly necessary for the continent. https://lnkd.in/dFKa3aUP.

I the lead up to #COP16 and #COP-MOP11, my thoughts are on biodiversity conservation with science. The world, especially the scientific world should ensure that facts prevail. We at ISAAA Africenter are doing the best we can.
Are you being part of the plan? Be #partoftheplan this #IDB2024. The Biotechnology sector with #GMOs and #NBTs is delivering the plan. @afri_isaaa @OFABKenya @kalromkulima @aatfafrica @EmbuUniversity @BiosafetyKenya

Our Senior Program Officer Bibiana Iraki is the consummate science communication specialist, a professional par excellence, who is always leading the fight against mis/disinformation in science and, quite honestly, no one works harder to achieve this goal. She leads a vibrant team of communication experts who are foremost scientists and who thrive on directing mis/disinformation where it belongs: to the bins. The biggest weapon against a lie is THE TRUTH, which ISAAA Africenter seeks to make known far and wide. Bibiana Iraki and team will be upping the tempo to kick 🦵 mis/disinformation even harder. The Africa Science Dialogue podcast https://lnkd.in/e9WdpMSk is here with us!!
The sheer magnitude of disinformation on key scientific issues is of grave concern to us at ISAAA Africenter. No more lamenting. We will stop at nothing to get ahead of it. So something cool is loading! Because we can't let emotion prevail over credible scientific evidence. Yes, we are entitled to our own opinions. But, we can never be entitled to our own facts. #AfricaScienceDialogue, where science meets society.
