This effort is part of our goal to plant 6,000 trees this month, with additional planting activities planned in Magarini. The orchard initiative aims to not only combat climate change but also enhance food security and nutrition for the students. By planting fruit trees, we are providing a sustainable source of food while fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among the youth. A big thank you to everyone involved in making this day a success. Together, we are calling back the rains and sowing seeds of change for future generations. As the 16th UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) continues in Cali, Colombia, the spotlight is on achieving the ambitious targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including conserving 30% of land and water by 2030. At OneMillionTrees4Kilifi, we see this as a powerful reminder of why our work matters—and how it contributes to the global movement for biodiversity and climate resilience. Our organization’s pillars—Green City Initiative, Fruit Orchards, and Community Stories—align with COP16's goals of ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions. By creating urban green spaces and building fruit orchards in schools, we are revitalizing degraded lands, combating malnutrition, and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. These efforts are a testament to the power of community-led solutions that echo COP16’s call for urgent action and inclusivity. Moreover, our storytelling projects amplify grassroots voices, sharing local experiences of climate challenges and sustainable practices. These stories not only raise awareness but also advocate for the involvement of indigenous and local knowledge in shaping biodiversity policies, which is a key theme at COP16. The discussions at COP16 emphasize the need for increased financial support for biodiversity efforts, especially in regions like ours. With adequate resources, we can expand our initiatives and continue making a meaningful impact. Together, we can transform local actions into global outcomes. We're excited to see our efforts influencing change across Kenya! At Onemilliontrees4Kilifi we've been working tirelessly to establish fruit orchards in schools, aiming to enhance food security and combat malnutrition among school-going children. Today, we are thrilled to learn that the First Lady, Her Excellency H.E Mama Rachael Ruto is championing the creation of fruit gardens in schools—a cause dear to our hearts. We warmly welcome Her Excellency to join this transformative movement and extend a special invitation for her to visit Kilifi County. The need for fruit orchards here is greater than ever, and it would be a true honor to establish a fruit orchard named in her recognition. Together, we can nurture a healthier, greener future and work towards our shared vision of Calling Back the Rains. With OneMillionTrees4Kilifi leading the way in promoting fruit gardens in Schools in Kilifi, we are committed to making a lasting impact across the nation. #OneMillionTrees4Kilifi #FruitGardensInSchools #FoodSecurity #Kilifi #RachelRuto #Kenya #ClimateAction #Nutrition Habitat for Humanity International Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) Jacob's Ladder Africa Africa Climate Ambassadors Programme Mtoto News Betty Kibaara Philanthropy Children's Health Education Empowerment Initiative-Kenya Sylvia Mwichuli, MPRSK African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya - Giraffe Centre One Acre Fund

We were delighted to participate in the International Day for Disaster Reduction held in Kilifi. The connection between climate change and disaster reduction is undeniable and crucial. By empowering the younger generation to understand the importance of caring for our environment, we can significantly reduce the occurrence and impact of natural disasters. At OneMillionTrees4Kilifi, we have actively engaged with 24 schools across Kilifi county, spreading the message of sustainable resource use and environmental stewardship. Our work emphasizes that young people are uniquely positioned to lead efforts in disaster risk reduction and environmental protection. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills, we can build resilient communities that are better prepared to face climate-related challenges. The keynote address by Prof. Simon highlighted the importance of empowering youth to be at the forefront of climate action and disaster management. His insights underscored the role of young people in driving sustainable development, aligning with global efforts such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, SDG 13 (Climate Action) calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, while SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) emphasizes the need for resilience to natural disasters. Our initiative not only focuses on Creating fruit orchard in Schools but also aims to integrate global climate action knowledge into local communities, creating awareness about how individual actions contribute to a larger impact. By fostering environmental responsibility in schools, we aim to cultivate a culture of sustainability that can be carried forward for generations. This approach contributes to achieving the SDGs by promoting sustainable land use (SDG 15: Life on Land), enhancing climate resilience, and reducing the risks associated with environmental degradation. The International Day for Disaster Reduction reminds us that proactive measures are essential to mitigating risks and building safer, more resilient societies. We look forward to expanding our collaboration with schools and communities to continue this vital work, empowering the young generation to be champions of climate justice and disaster reduction.
