Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Nairobi Climate Network Gender x Climate Networking Event. The event provided a valuable platform for networking, exchanging ideas, and reflecting on how we can drive meaningful change in climate action through a gender-responsive approach. The Power of Networking and Collaboration Engaging with professionals in the climate space reinforced the importance of collective action. Meaningful change happens when we share knowledge, resources, and best practices. 2. The Need for Gender-Disaggregated Data A recurring theme was the lack of gender-specific data in climate research. Without accurate information, the experiences of women—especially those in agriculture and clean energy—remain underrepresented in policy and funding decisions. 3. Women as Key Drivers of Climate Solutions Women are at the forefront of climate innovation, from clean energy initiatives to sustainable agriculture. However, they still face limited access to finance and resources. Addressing these barriers is crucial to scaling climate solutions that work for everyone. 4. The Urgency of Gender-Inclusive Climate Finance Women produce between 60-80% of food in developing countries, yet they receive less than 10% of agricultural assistance. More inclusive financial systems are needed to ensure that climate investments reach those who are most affected by environmental changes. 5. Policy Must Integrate Gender Considerations Climate policies that overlook gender risk deepening inequalities. A gender-inclusive approach ensures that women are not just seen as beneficiaries but as essential leadersin climate-resilience efforts. Moving Forward ✅ Creating spaces for collaboration—whether through events like this or digital platforms for ongoing knowledge exchange. ✅ Advocating for gender-specific climate data to ensure that decision-making is informed by real experiences. ✅ Strengthening financial and policy frameworks that recognize and support women’s roles in climate action. If we are serious about sustainability, we must ensure that women’s voices, expertise, and leadership are at the center of decision-making. Yesterday, I attended the Nairobi Climate Network event exploring Gender x Climate. As we continue celebrating Women's Month, the discussions revealed critical priorities for those of us in the climate, agriculture, and gender sectors. Expert Voices Shaping the Conversation 1️⃣ Charlot Magayi (Mukuru Clean Stoves | Earthshot Prize Winner 2022) showcased how women-led enterprises can create scalable climate solutions while addressing energy poverty. Such an inspiring story. 2️⃣ Silvia Baur-Yazbec (CGAP | World Bank Group) highlighted the financial barriers women face in accessing climate finance, noting that 198 million women are expected to suffer the most severe climate impacts. 3️⃣ Wanjiku Wanjohi (Oxfam) delivered compelling insights on the women-climate-agriculture nexus, emphasizing the severe lack of gender-disaggregated data in climate scenarios in Africa. Without this evidence, women's experiences remain invisible in policy and funding decisions. Why This Matters 👑 Agricultural resilience requires women's empowerment. Women produce 60-80% of food in many developing countries but receive less than 10% of agricultural assistance 🔥 Energy transitions need women's leadership. As household energy managers, women are essential to clean energy adoption 💰 Financial systems must evolve. Current climate finance architecture undervalues women's economic activities 📋 Gender integration is crucial for effective policy. Climate policies without gender dimensions risk worsening inequalities. Moving Forward The path forward requires persistence, negotiation skills, and entrepreneurial courage from women in agriculture and climate. However, individual effort isn't enough. We need a systematic change in how we: - Collect gender-specific climate vulnerability data - Design financial products recognizing women's unique situations -Integrate gender analysis into all climate policy - Value women's traditional knowledge alongside technical solutions I left committed to centering women in climate work—not as mere beneficiaries but as essential leaders and innovators. The climate crisis cannot be solved without addressing gender, particularly at the nexus of women, agriculture, and climate. Last month, C40 Cities and UNEP hosted the UrbanShift Africa Forum in Nairobi, bringing together 250+ mayors, city officials, policymakers, investors, and climate leaders to accelerate urban climate action across the continent. The forum highlighted how African cities are tackling the twin challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate resilience — advocating for green investments, sustainable urban planning, and inclusive climate solutions. We co-hosted a networking reception with C40 Cities at River Cafe in Karura Forest on 19 February, fostering connections among city mayors from across Africa, climate leaders, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. This event provided a platform for seven NCN organisation members advancing sustainable urban solutions — TakaTaka Solutions, InsectiPro, Regen Organics, Revivo, eBee.africa, BioLite, and Takazuri Limited — to showcase their innovations. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting the Nairobi Climate Network at one of our distribution hubs in Nairobi as part of pre-summit event for the Africa Tech Summit. During the tour, we highlighted how Keep IT Cool is improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and fisherfolks leveraging our Markiti platform which connects supply with demand, and showcased our hybrid logistics operations, which are cutting carbon emissions by up to 51%. We also shared our vision for the future, including the launch of a solar-powered cold chain distribution facility, set to impact millions by 2030. Alongside this, we are honoured to be selected as a finalist in the 2025 Africa Tech Summit Awards under the Agri-Tech category, with winners set to be announced on February 13th. As a pre-summit event for the Africa Tech Summit , we hosted a group of global investors and tech enthusiasts yesterday on an immersive ecosystem tour showcasing Kenya’s cutting-edge climate-tech solutions. We visited: Keep IT Cool | Earthshot Prize Winner 24 – learning about their digital proximity-based marketplace, Markiti, and their state-of-the-art hybrid cold chain storage and logistics operations. Their innovation has led to a 98% reduction in post-harvest losses while increasing fisherfolk incomes by 15%. As the 2024 winner of The Earthshot Prize in the "Reducing Our Waste" category, Keep IT Cool is set to launch Kenya’s largest solar-powered cold chain distribution facility for smallholder farmers. Verst Carbon – exploring how they are unlocking Africa’s carbon potential through data-driven monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV) of carbon projects. Guests experienced a demo of their dMRV platform for cookstove projects, highlighting its critical role in securing investments and enhancing transparency in global carbon markets. By partnering with e-mobility manufacturers, M-Kopa is boosting the adoption of electric motorcycles and reducing carbon emissions. Guests also learned about their second-life mobile phone manufacturing, contributing to a circular economy and e-waste reduction. Roam – experiencing their groundbreaking advancements in electric mobility. Guests toured their facility, learning about ROAM’s locally designed and manufactured electric motorcycles and buses, which cut carbon emissions by over 90% for motorcycles and 80% for buses. Their focus on affordable and efficient e-mobility solutions is helping reshape public transportation in Africa. Yesterday, the Verst Carbon team had the opportunity to showcase how technology is transforming climate action across Africa during the Africa Tech Summit Climate Tech Ecosystem Tour. 🔹 Michael Thuita showcased the Verst Carbon Project Development Support Platform, designed to simplify and scale carbon project development. By providing end-to-end guidance, this toolkit makes it easier for project developers to navigate the complexities of climate finance and project certification. 🔹 Antony Sure explored how we are leveraging AI for climate policy assessment and GIS/satellite imagery for carbon opportunity identification. These tools help governments, investors, and businesses make data-driven decisions—ensuring climate interventions are both effective and scalable. 🔹 Jaffer Hassan walked attendees through our digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (#dMRV) platform, which is revolutionizing how clean cooking projects are tracked. By providing transparency and automating data collection, our dMRV platform ensures measurable and verifiable climate impact for e-cooking initiatives such as Nyalore Impact Limited. The discussions throughout the event reinforced the critical role of technology in addressing climate challenges. As we continue to scale our solutions, collaboration remains key. Roam are an electric mobility company that design and develop electric motorcycles and electric buses, these two products can offset the most amount of carbon emissions globally (more than 90% reduction for motorcycles and 80% for electric buses).
