🚢 South Korea Launches Its First U.S. Navy Ship MRO Project, Opening a New Era of Defense Cooperation Between the Two Nations (Korea-U.S.) On September 2nd, a historic moment unfolded at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje Shipyard, marking a new chapter in defense cooperation between South Korea and the United States. A U.S. Navy logistics support ship entered the Hanwha Ocean Geoje Shipyard for MRO(Maintenance, Repair, and Operation) work, a first for any South Korean shipyard. The U.S. Navy logistics support ship, which Hanwha Ocean won a contract to service, arrived at the Geoje Shipyard to undergo comprehensive maintenance. The arrival of the ship, which is expected to be a milestone in the history of Korea-U.S. defense collaboration, was witnessed by over 50 representatives from both nations, including officials from the U.S. Navy Military Sealift Command, South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. The vessel, named the USNS Wally Schirra, plays a crucial role in resupplying ammunition, food, repair parts, and fuel to other naval vessels during operations. It has a displacement of approximately 40,000 tons, with a length of 210 meters and a beam of 32.2 meters. Hanwha Ocean stated, “We are proud to be the first Korean shipyard to undertake the MRO project for a U.S. Navy vessel. 😊 We are delighted to announce that Hanwha Ocean is on schedule for the sail-away of our latest fixed platform project for North Oil Company (NOC) – a joint venture between Qatar Energy and TotalEnergies. The platform, constructed for the Al-Shaheen Oil Field in Qatar, is set to depart from the Geoje Okpo yard at the end of July 2024. Al-Shaheen, located approximately 80km northeast of Qatar, is one of the world's largest offshore oil fields, featuring 40 existing platforms and up to 430 operational wells. Hanwha Ocean has proudly completed a total of 34,800 tons, including a new platform with a 25-year design life, a jacket substructure, and extensive brownfield remodeling and connections along 8.2 million manhours of Safety LTI (Lost Time Injury) Free. The platform is expected to arrive in Qatar within 25 days, with the first oil target set for the end of December 2024, and project hand-over planned for May 2025. This timely sail-away is a testament to Hanwha Ocean's expertise and resilience, especially in the face of increased commodity and labor costs due to COVID-19 and the Ukraine war. Our successful completion of this project, our 31st fixed platform, highlights our ability to deliver large-scale projects on time, even while collaborating with numerous international partners. We look forward to continue this collaboration with our clients - NOC, Qatar Energy, and TotalEnergies - with additional business opportunities in LNG carriers and further oil & gas field development projects. On the 22nd, Hanwha Ocean signed a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) with the US Navy's Naval Supply Systems Command. With this agreement, Hanwha Ocean has secured the official qualification to participate in bids for the US Navy's MRO business for the next five years. The MSRA is an agreement between the US government and general shipbuilding companies for the maintenance and repair of US naval vessels. It is a crucial certification that ensures the quality and reliability of naval vessel maintenance for the US Navy. Companies that obtain the MSRA through a rigorous evaluation process by the US Navy gain the qualification to participate in various US naval vessel maintenance projects. Hanwha Ocean significantly reduced the period required for MSRA certification, which typically takes over a year, to just seven months. In this episode of “Hanwha Spotlight,” we’ll shed light on transformative solutions developed by Hanwha Ocean, a world-class company with a 50-year history that made South Korea into a shipbuilding powerhouse. Hanwha Ocean plans to aid the maritime industry’s energy transition with various decarbonization solutions including high value-added LNG ships that are built using advanced proprietary technologies. One out of five LNG ships sailing on the ocean is made at Hanwha Ocean yard in South Korea, according data provided by Clarksons Research as of June 2024. From June 3 to 7, Hanwha Ocean showcased its green shipping technology at Posidonia 2024, one of the world’s top 3 shipping exhibitions. The company displayed a model of a 93,000㎥ Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) at its booth, marking a significant step towards the era of zero-carbon shipping ― beyond low carbon. In addition, its large liquified carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers received approval in principle (AiP) from ABS. 📍 Hanwha Ocean Celebrates Milestone with Successful Launch of Wind Maker On 3rd June, Hanwha Ocean celebrated a significant milestone with the successful completion of the key event for launching the Wind Maker, the new Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV) ordered by Cadeler Inc. The vessel is an NG-16000X design by Gusto MSC and includes a 2,600 Ton Leg Encircling Crane from Huisman Equipment B.V. of the Netherlands. The Jack-up is designed to efficiently install turbines with capacities of up to 20 megawatts at water depths reaching up to 65 meters, with the flexibility to operate using either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or Ammonia as alternate fuels. This success highlights Hanwha Ocean's ability to take on challenging tasks and reach remarkable milestones in the maritime sector. The successful completion of the key event of launching was made possible by the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of the entire Hanwha Ocean crew. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone whose hard work and dedication contributed to this milestone achievement in the construction of the Wind Maker at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard.
