According to #SAFIN, #AgriSMEs are the linchpin🔑 of agri-food systems, driving 90% of the sector's activity🚀, generating half of its economic value💹, and playing a significant role in food processing🍲 and innovation💡. Despite their critical importance, many #AgriSMEs face significant financing challenges🚧, hindering their ability to scale📊. A staggering US$100 billion finance gap 💸 exists for #AgriSMEs in #SubSaharan Africa alone🌍. The pressing question remains: Who will bridge this gap 🌉 and fund the #AgriSMEs journey from farm to table?🏞️🍽️ Can the Africa Food Systems Forum (#AFSF) serve as a catalyst⚡ for unlocking financing for Africa's #AgriSMEs, thereby accelerating progress towards its strategic vision🌱 of transforming the continent's food systems to be inclusive🤲, sustainable🌿, resilient🌍, and capable of providing affordable💵, nutritious🥗, and safe food🛡️ for all Africans? 𝐀 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, #FoodSecurity and 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞🌍🚀 The Africa Food Systems Forum (#AFSF) Strategic Plan 2023-2027 outlines a five-year roadmap for the #AFSF Secretariat to drive the Food System Transformation Agenda in #Africa🚜🥗. The ultimate goal is to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs) by 2030 📈, by scaling up efforts to create healthier, more inclusive, sustainable, resilient, and equitable food systems across the continent🍽️ The #AFSF brings together key stakeholders🤝 around a shared vision: empowering #Africa's millions of smallholder farmers👩🏾🌾 and their families 👨👩👦, who produce 80% of the continent's food, to reach their full potential. To achieve this, the #AFSF analyzes the food value chain through the lens of food security and wealth/job creation👷🏾♂️, focusing on five key pillars: “production systems” 🌾, “storage and distribution”🚛 , “processing and packaging” 🏭📦, “market and trade”🛒, and “food waste and nutrition”🥦🚯. Additionally, the #AFSF recognizes the critical role of five support pillars: “policy and capacity” 🏛️, “financing” 💰, “climate change”🔥, “youth and women” 👩🏾💼, and “digital technology and infrastructure”📡💻. A closer examination of the #AFSF reveals its critical role in advancing the implementation of the Malabo Declaration📜🌾 and the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP)🌍🍛. Furthermore, the AFSF serves as a strategic platform to ensure the African Continental Free Trade Area (#AfCFTA)📦 prioritizes nutritional outcomes during its implementation. As the Malabo Declaration, #CAADP, and #AfCFTA are flagship African Union (#AU) 🇪🇺🌱 programs aimed at driving agricultural transformation, economic integration, and food security 🌽, the #AFSF plays a vital role in facilitating the successful implementation of the #AU #Agenda2063📅. Establishing a private sector-led #AFSF unit 🏢 at country level could significantly enhance the implementation of #AFSF objectives🎯, particularly in relation to the #Malabo #Declaration📜, #CAADP🌾, and #AfCFTA📊🚛. This unit could serve as a coordination hub🏢, bringing together non-state actors such as development partners🤝, #NGOs🏟️, #academia🎓, and #media📰 to oversee the implementation of programs focused on: ✅Sustainable food systems🌾 ✅Food security🍽️ ✅Food trade🚢 ✅Investment in the agricultural sector💰 🤔What are your thoughts? 💡💬 John Nyekanyeka Naeem A. MAKING OF A NUTRITION-SENSITIVE🍲 AFCFTA🌍 According to the The Global Nutrition Report, which aggregates data from credible sources like the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the The World Bank Bank, Africa's overall nutrition status is alarming, with the continent grappling with a triple burden🛡️of malnutrition: undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and rising overweight/obesity🚫 rates. The African Continental Free Trade Area (#AfCFTA) is poised to transform💡 Africa's nutrition landscape by fostering intra-African trade📉, reducing reliance on foreign imports📊, and enhancing domestic processing capacity🌟, which can lead to improved food security📦, economic growth, and inclusivity. However, its success hinges on effective implementation and coordination among African countries. To maximize #AfCFTA's impact on nutrition, African Union member states should prioritize the following nutrition-sensitive strategies: ✅Incorporate nutrition objectives in national implementation plans ✅Promote nutritious food trade ✅Support smallholder farmers ✅Foster public-private partnerships to promote nutrition-sensitive agriculture, food processing, and distribution practices. ✅Strengthen food safety and standards ✅Monitor and evaluate nutrition outcomes ✅Engage civil society and communities to ensure that nutrition needs and concerns are addressed. African governments must invest in systems to implement full-scale🚀food balance sheets and agro-economic surveys, which provide vital data to inform nutrition-sensitive policies, pinpoint nutrition gaps, and drive targeted interventions to curb malnutrition and promote healthy diets. AGRA works in 15 African countries, including #Ethiopia, #Ghana, #Mali, #Niger, #Nigeria, #Rwanda, #Senegal, #Tanzania, #Uganda, #Zambia, #BurkinaFaso, #Kenya, #Mozambique, and #Malawi, to drive inclusive agricultural transformation and sustainable food systems. Notably, AGRA is one of the few organizations in Africa promoting food balance sheets and agro-economic surveys, making it an ideal partner🎯 for ensuring a nutrition-sensitive implementation of the #AfCFTA. AGRO-ECONOMIC SURVEY📊🤝 On 8th April, 2024, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture suspend exportation of raw soya beans. #Malawi's recurring struggles with crop export bans have devastatingly impacted businesspeople and smallholder farmers, necessitating collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture to develop and implement strategies that promote agricultural commercialization 🚜🌱, enhance market access📊 and provide robust support systems for farmers🌍🥗. Are agro-economic survey a solution? An agro-economic survey is a powerful research tool that gathers data on the economic and social aspects of agricultural production🌾, farming systems, and rural livelihoods. By utilizing this tool, #Malawi can gain a deeper understanding of the economic viability of farming, identify challenges and opportunities, and inform policy and development interventions. Specifically, agro-economic surveys can provide critical data on crop production, yields, market trends📊, and consumption patterns, enabling policymakers to strike a balance between export-oriented production🌾 and domestic food security needs, and ultimately optimize crop production🌾 to drive sustainable growth🌍🥗 and development. Malawi, an agrarian society heavily reliant on agriculture, views the African Continental Free Trade Area (#AfCFTA) as a promising opportunity, given that agriculture accounts for 45% of the country's export revenues, although the lack of a comprehensive agro-economic survey may lead to market unpredictability. To ensure stability and predictability for smallholder farmers seeking to capitalize on the #AfCFTA, the Ministries of Trade and Industry, Agriculture, and Finance and Economic Planning must collaborate through the National Statistical Office (#NSO) to conduct regular and comprehensive agro-economic surveys. WHY THE FOOD BALANCE SHEET (FBS)?🌾📊 A food balance sheet is a statistical tool that measures a country's food supply and demand, providing a comprehensive picture of its food situation. In Africa, this tool is particularly crucial, as it informs strategies to achieve the goals of the Malabo Declaration, Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (#CAADP), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (#AfCFTA), ultimately enhancing food security and economic growth🌍🍎. The Malabo Declaration, #CAADP, and #AfCFTA collectively aim to improve Africa's #FBS by boosting agricultural productivity🌍🥗, enhancing market access, and promoting intra-African trade🚛🌐, ultimately increasing food availability, improving access, and reducing reliance on imports. African Union's landmark agreements The Malabo Declaration, #CAADP, and #AfCFTA converge to drive Africa's agricultural and trade transformation by 2025🌱📈, prioritizing productivity, market access, climate resilience🌾🌦️, and economic growth. A desk research conducted by the Planetarium Institute revealed that AGRA is a standout organization in Africa, uniquely positioned to comprehensively address the goals of the Malabo Declaration and the #CAADP. Notably, AGRA portfolio includes a range of initiatives aligned with these frameworks, including: Africa food prize; Africa seeds access index (#TASAI); agribusiness development program; agricultural finance and risk management; agricultural policy strengthening; capacity building and institutional strengthening; conservation agriculture; crop improvement program; integrated soil fertility management (#ISFM); knowledge sharing and partnerships; market access and trade program🚜📦; policy and advocacy program; seed systems development🌱; soil health improvement program🌾🌱. #AGRA has a significant presence in Africa, operating in 15 focus countries, including #Ghana, #Ethiopia, #Mali, #Niger, #Nigeria, #Rwanda, #Senegal, #Tanzania, #Uganda, #Zambia, #BurkinaFaso, #Kenya, #Mozambique, and #Malawi. Given its extensive expertise in implementing the Malabo Declaration, #CAADP and its existing continental footprint, the Planetarium Institute believes that #AGRA is uniquely positioned to expand its reach and become a pan-African organization, playing a pivotal role in advancing the #AfCFTA. Strengthening the interconnection To ensure the successful implementation of the AfCFTA in Malawi, the National Planning Commission of Malawi, as the custodian of Malawi Vision 2063, should collaborate closely with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (#MOTI), the Ministry of Agriculture and Malawi National Statistics Office (#NSO). This collaboration is crucial for aligning key policies and strategies, including the "Control of Goods Act", the National Exports Strategy (#NES) 2021-2026, the #AfCFTA National Implementation Strategy 2021-2026, and the National Agricultural Policy, to achieve #AfCFTA's objectives in #Malawi📊🌱

𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐢 🌍🚀 Malawi is transforming its cross-border trade by upskilling customs agents, boosting efficiency and competitiveness💼📈 Led by the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation (GATF), a new licensing framework with training and exams is being introduced📝🎓. This modernization effort is crucial for Malawi's #AfCFTA implementation, streamlining the clearing process, increasing transparency, and empowering #SMEs🚀 The program is a joint effort by #GATF and key stakeholders, including customs brokers associations, Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI), the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), and the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences- MUBAS🏢🤝. It aims to boost the skills and professionalism of #customsclearingagents, who play a vital role in #internationaltrade, handling #complexdocumentation and ensuring seamless goods movement. By investing in their training📜✍️, the program seeks to unlock their potential and promote efficient, secure trade practice🔓📦 In other significant trade facilitation developments, Malawi launched the Electronic Certificate of Origin program, becoming the second COMESA member state to do so after #Eswatini. Introduced in Blantyre on December 17, 2024, this initiative will simplify trade processes, empowering customs clearing agents to facilitate electronic certificates, verification, and transmission—streamlining trade and reducing bureaucracy💻✔️. At first glance, the Modernization of Clearing Agents Licensing Framework and Electronic Certificate of Origin program may seem duplicative, but they complement each other perfectly. 🔗✨ Together, they enhance efficiency, transparency, and competitiveness while creating a seamless trade facilitation process.
