About us

We are optimists, aiding in removing the barriers that limit people from reaching their full potential. In developing countries, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation focuses on improving people’s health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life.

When women and girls have the tools to lead healthy lives, gain an education, and reach their full economic potential, everyone benefits.   The foundation's leaders and staff understand this deeply—thanks to the support they received from their teachers, families, and communities during their own girlhood, they were able to learn and grow. Every girl deserves the same opportunity to realize her dreams.   On International #DayOfTheGirl, swipe through to see some of our staff as their younger selves.♀🫶

  • At the turn of the century, more than ten million children died before their fifth birthday. Two decades later, that number was cut in half. That’s in large part thanks to the scientists and health workers who invented and delivered new solutions to some of the world’s deadliest diseases. Ahead of the World Health Summit, we asked five innovators working to cut that number in half again about their work and what keeps them inspired: https://gates.ly/3BHs5I3 #WHS2024

Ratan Tata was a visionary leader whose dedication to improving lives left an indelible mark on India—and the world. I had the privilege of meeting him on several occasions, and I was always moved by his strong sense of purpose and service to humanity. Together, we partnered on numerous initiatives to help people lead healthier, more prosperous lives. His loss will be felt around the world for years to come, but I know the legacy he left and example he set will continue to inspire generations: https://b-gat.es/3U4byEm

  • What’s with all the milk? This summer, we brought Partners of Human Potential to life in London to share the story of how better cows 🐄 lead to better grades 📕. Featuring Professors Mike Coffey and Raphael Mrode from SRUC, a giant milk carton, and ice cream, visitors learned how when you remove the barriers to someone’s potential, the possibilities are endless.

  • Gates Philanthropy Partners (GPP) is a uniquely flexible and collaborative giving model that directs support to global health and development organizations with the most need—and potential. • When life-saving drugs are priced out of reach in the world’s poorest areas, drug-resistant bacteria called superbugs thrive. You’re probably familiar with the world’s deadliest infectious disease: tuberculosis (TB). A new model for global partnerships—the TB Drug Accelerator (TBDA)—is taking a collaborative approach to fighting superbugs like drug-resistant TB. The TBDA’s 26 members are driving rapid drug discovery and development and prioritizing the viewpoints of local experts and communities to ensure treatments are accessible to those who need them most. Learn more from Trevor Mundel about how this new approach is paving the way for lasting global health solutions: https://bit.ly/47XiwRc

  • Around the world, millions of women in low- and middle-income countries lack access to a bank account and other digital financial tools. This perpetuates cycles of poverty by limiting women’s ability to invest in healthcare, education, or entrepreneurship. Bangladeshi entrepreneur Jhuma saw this firsthand and decided to make a change. After receiving training to access and use digital financial tools and government services, she started a campaign to explain the benefits of digital financial tools to women in her community. Eventually, these women began opening bank accounts and growing their businesses, helping to revitalize their communities and boost their nation’s economy. https://gates.ly/3TUCma8

  • Well-supported teachers lead to well-supported kids. But too often, our teachers don’t get the support they need. Globally, we are feeling the effects: UNESCO’s Global Report on Teachers found that attrition rates among primary school teachers have nearly doubled between 2015 and 2022, with many teachers leaving the profession after five years. Today’s teachers continue to lack access to the high-quality teaching materials, learning resources, training and coaching needed to build healthy and thriving communities. Finding solutions to this problem will require centering the voices of teachers, ensuring they have a seat at the table in driving education policy, and getting them the training, coaching, and support they need to do their jobs effectively. This #WorldTeachersDay, we're showing our love for the educators globally who work tirelessly to help their students learn and thrive! • Too often, teachers' viewpoints are not considered when designing and implementing new education programming. Today for #WorldTeachersDay, Benjamin Piper, director of our Global Education Program, and Luis Benveniste of The World Bank discuss a new theory of pedagogical change that can change this process for the better. By centering teachers’ beliefs within the design process, we can develop more impactful, longer lasting programs that help young students learn and thrive. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gGfpCFfi

  • 2023 was a crucial year of progress for child health, thanks to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. With the dedicated work of the Alliance, 69 million children received life-saving vaccines in 2023 and 1.3 million future deaths were averted—which translates to 2 lives saved every minute. Also, 14 million girls were protected with #HPV vaccines – more than the last ten years combined. These 2023 numbers add up to phenomenal figures since the Alliance’s inception—more than 1.1 billion children immunized and 18.8 million lives saved. Sustaining this great progress requires greater support for Gavi and partners to ensure more children have the vaccines they need to thrive. By working together, we can safeguard all children from vaccine-preventable diseases and build a healthier, more equitable world #ForOurFuture. https://bit.ly/3YeOd5u
