Last week marked an important milestone for our global network, as we hosted our first major event in #NorthAmerica. We were thrilled to welcome #industryleaders to #SanAntonio, Texas - to reflect on our collective move from #strategy to #action, and continue growing our shared commitment to building a better future for all. Our three-day Summit spotlighted the Alliance’s top priorities for #sustainable transformation: 1️⃣ Developing #unifiedstandards to #harmonise #sustainablepractices across the industry 2️⃣ Launching the World #Academy for #SustainableHospitality to equip the #hospitalityworkforce with the skills and knowledge to translate our vision into action 3️⃣ Building the #NetPositiveHospitality impact fund to fuel #innovative, measurable projects worldwide Throughout the Summit, sessions on ‘2025 and Beyond’ brought new insights into #decarbonisation, #compliance and #certifications, with experts exploring the complexities of #sustainabilityregulations, #sustainabilitylanguage and the links between #community, #DEI and #sustainability. 💡 The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has been in the spotlight for most of 2024. Some call it a bureaucratic monster, others a champion of strong environmental regulation. Despite such contrasting viewpoints, one thing is clear — EUDR will impact thousands of companies, and compliance preparation cannot be delayed. This is true, even if the EUDR implementation is delayed for 12 months, as was recently proposed by the European Commission and supported by the Council. While awaiting the decision of the EU Parliament regarding the extension of EUDR’s timeline, 2B Policy would like to share insights in its new blog post on the current challenges of EUDR implementation and how businesses should use the extended implementation time to prepare. 2B Policy spoke at the last of three webinars hosted by Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute as a key milestone of our collaboration in mapping the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard against the upcoming EU sustainability legislation. Our collaboration with Lucie Ladigue, Nienke Steen, Monica Becker and Elwyn Grainger-Jones started by taking stock of the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard to determine if it is positioned to comply with the upcoming EU Green Claims Directive. This legislation will be crucial for certification schemes to monitor in the future, as it includes mandatory requirements certification bodies must meet to be allowed on the EU market. This initial phase of the project took us on a longer journey to understand where C2C Certified® can provide added value for its certification holders beyond compliance. From sustainability reporting and ecodesign requirements to due diligence obligations - our takeaway is that certification bodies can be very valuable tools for compliance in the industry. We see that certification schemes are facing many complex challenges in the changing legislative environment of the EU, but also, that they are uniquely positioned to spearhead sustainability excellence beyond compliance. Congratulations to Worldly on hosting its first Customer Forum. It was exciting and reassuring to see them put their customer’s needs at the centre of their program. 2BPolicy joined the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive panel to help unpick the complexity of the Double Materiality Assessments. Here are the key themes: Businesses only have to report on what is material to their organisation: “While it sounds progressive and fair to standardised ESG reporting sounds, it doesn’t make sense for a Fashion Brand and Nuclear Power Facility to report on the same topics.” We discussed why there is a “double” in a Double Materiality Assessment. To work out which topics a business must report on, they must assess their impacts through two lenses: 💸 Financial Materiality refers to the financial opportunities and risks that a changing environmental and social landscape has on a business. For example, would an increased likelihood of flooding impact insurance costs on certain facilities? 🌍 Impact materiality is the impact an evolving business has on society and the environment. For example, how is a business adopting practices that reduce the risk of human rights abuses? 2B Policy is here to help you understand your CSRD obligations, design a compliance approach or understand how to access the data you need. While the textile industry overwhelmingly agrees that collective action and impact reduction can only proceed if we agree on how to measure our impact, one of the challenges is creating a valid and robust method which works for all actors involved. While representing only around 2% of total fiber consumption according to Textile Exchange’s Materials Market Report of 2023, the perspective of the sector of animal fibers is critical for the success of the EU PEF. Baptiste Carriere-Pradal recently spoke at Natural Fiber Connect, where he had the opportunity to unpack the PEF for apparel and footwear. 2BPolicy Policy facilitates the development of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) Category rule for Apparel and Footwear on behalf of the European Commission and the members of the project’s Technical Secretariat. Within this responsibility, it is necessary to exchange and welcome feedback from all parts of the value chain. At Natural Fibre Connect, Baptiste engaged with and listened to the concerns of stakeholders in the animal fiber sector. Future developments of the PEF will clearly have to be more holistic and target the improvement of the methodology’s database in particular. The quality of this database is crucial to ensuring that different materials’ environmental footprints can be accurately represented by a PEF study. In the EU context, Environmental Footprinting and the PEF will likely play a critical role in the implementation of several pieces of sustainability legislation. 2B Policy is committed to charting the intersections between science, business realities and policy to ensure that the footprinting solutions are material and fair. 2B Policy’s experience working with consumer goods businesses has taught us that a solid understanding of the policy landscape is the foundation of good #waste and #overstock strategies. Many organisations face the challenge of a fragmented and, in many cases, not yet clearly defined global policy outlook regarding all things: packaging waste, textile waste, chemical disposal, and the destruction of unsold goods. To help stay at the forefront of this conversation, Annica Edl from 2BPolicy attended the Textile - The Circular Challenge event organised by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) in Brussels. This event helped clarify the discussions regarding circularity in the textile sector and the industry’s responses to succeeding in this space. The insights shared by The European Commission’s Vincente Gente (DG Environment) on the key policies surrounding textile waste and insights from experts like Julia Ettinger (Blees) (EuRIC - The European Recycling Industries), Mauro Scalia (EURATEX - European Apparel and Textile Confederation), Maud HARDY (Refashion) and Teresiah Wairimu (MCAK Mitumba Consortium Association of Kenya) helped unpacked the real-world impacts of current regulations.
