Deep Sea Conservation Coalition
Non-profitorganisaties
We want robust action to be taken to protect the ocean depths, their remarkable species and the secrets they hold.
Over ons
The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) comprises over 100 member organizations, from non-government organizations and fishers organizations to law and policy institutes worldwide, working together under the umbrella of the DSCC to protect vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems and safeguard long-term health, integrity and resilience of this crucial part of the ocean. In this time of converging biodiversity and climate crises, protecting the ocean – our planet’s life support system – is more critical than ever. The DSCC works to ensure the continued health and productivity of deep-sea habitats and species. Our top priority is the urgent closure of all vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) of the deep sea to any form of exploitation. #DefendTheDeep / #DeepSea / #BottomTrawling / #SaveOurSeamounts / #DeepSeaMining / #SeabedMining / #Seamounts

In this moment in Kingston, member states of the International Seabed Authority respond to the reckless attempt taken by The Metals Company to bypass and undermine #multilateralism. The international community rejects #TMC actions with great unity: 🇸🇬 ‘Singapore received the news with significant concern and disappointment’ 'We categorically reject the allegation that the ISA is in breach of its obligations' 🇨🇷 'This is the same company that is rushing us to conclude the regulations. It is the same company that talks about being committed to the environment, and whose representatives walk in the hallways of the authority.' 🇺🇬 'If the process is initiated […] then there is a breach of good faith obligation and should be viewed as such' 🇫🇷 'France is very concerned about a threat posed to UNCLOS. This is the constitution for our ocean. This would be a grave affront to multilateralism.' 🇮🇪 'We also disagree with any suggestion that there is a legitimate expectation, at least in the legal meaning of that term, to commence exploitation activities, and certainly not in the short term and in the absence of a mining code.' 🇷🇺 'The Authority is THE only international organization that is mandated to govern activities in the area.' 🇮🇩 'We have the responsibility to ensure that activities in the Area are conducted for the benefit of all state parties, particularly developing nations, and in a manner that safeguards the marine environment for future generations.' 🇬🇧 'We are concerned by the press statement of The Metals Company. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is the global legal framework for all activities in the ocean and seas, and a cornerstone of the multilateral system. UNCLOS has made a significant contribution to global peace, prosperity and security by providing consistency and certainty, concerning the governance of the ocean' 🌍 African Group 'we express our deep concern regarding the evolving developments […] The AG reiterate […] any activity in the Area has to be carried out in strict conformity with the legal regime established by UNCLOS and in a manner that's expected principles of environment have stewardship, equitable beneficiary and the common heritage of humankind.' 🇨🇳 'in this critical moment in history, it is more important for us to be united in continuing to demonstrate the effectiveness and mentality of the regime […] China is ready to work with all parties in the spirit of multilateralism' 🇩🇪 'We firmly reject the allegation that the Authority is in breach with these obligations. We have also stated that DE insists on the strict application of the precautionary approach, and sees the need for precautionary pause in deep sea mining facilitating further scientific research.' and 28 more #TMC has discredited itself from this forum. Disgraceful actions by a single private company. #DEFENDtheDEEP

The Guardian reports on The Metals Company’s intent to bypass a UN treaty and secure the US Government’s authorization to mine in international waters. Having tried and failed to pressure the international community to meet their demands, this reckless announcement is “a slap in the face to international cooperation” and highlights that TMC never really cared about building an effective evidence-based regulatory regime, nor did they care about fuelling the green transition or a more sustainable future. More international media, such as Bloomberg, NPR or The New York Times are reporting on this concerning news. Now more than ever, as our legal adviser Duncan Currie notes “a moratorium is needed to prevent this kind of international conflict, discord and chaos." ⚠️ After years of attempting to pressure the international community into allowing deep-sea mining, The Metals Company has taken the reckless and desperate step of announcing their intent to mine the international seabed through the United States’ Deep Sea Hard Mineral Resources Act by applying for an application in the second quarter of 2025. Read our reaction to their plans here: https://lnkd.in/dUxR7_qc

The deep ocean has remained untouched for millennia. It supports planetary health in ways that science is only beginning to understand. 🌊🌏 But deep-sea mining threatens to turn it into a battlefield for corporate greed. The International Seabed Authority must act as responsible stewards to protect the deep sea and safeguard its common heritage. A moratorium would ensure that any future decision on #DeepSeaMining is grounded in solid, evidence-based scientific research. defendthedeep.org #StopTheMachines #ISA30

We celebrated a decade of deep-sea protections at the North Pacific Fisheries Commission! 🎉 🌊 Our co-led event with The Pew Charitable Trusts provided an in-depth look at seamounts, deep-sea biodiversity, and the urgent need to address destructive fishing activities like bottom trawling. We also looked to the future and what the next decade of deep-sea protections could look like. With mounting scientific evidence supporting the need for better management of bottom-contact fishing and enhanced protections for vulnerable marine ecosystems, it’s time to take action. A huge thank you to all who joined the conversation! #OceanLifelines #BottomTrawling #SustainableFisheries Raiana McKinney, Miyahara Masa, William Gibbons-Fly, Matthew Gianni
