In the Netherlands (or 'Holland') it's quite warm this week: some 28 oC. In KeyGene's banana breeding station in the village of Bemmel, it's always that warm! Here's a post by the joint Yelloway initiative (together with Chiquita and MusaRadix), in which KeyGene performs the breeding. In Yelloway, we develop banana varieties with resistance against TR4 Fusarium wilt (Panama disease) and Black Sigatoka.
It's often said that you can't pick your parents. In plant breeding, that's actually what it's all about. Our breeding program @Yelloway is unique in several ways; one of which is the population we select from. Another is the selection procedure. Learn from our Yelloway head of breeding, Fernando A. García-Bastidas why this is important and how it's done. Stay tuned for the next update, where we'll continue with more information about the pollination process Video courtesy of 🎥 Fernando A. This year, KeyGene celebrated its 35th anniversary by inviting long-standing partners to share their collaboration experiences with us. In his interview, Dr. Ponnusamy Umashankar, head of R&D in Seeds Business at Mahindra Agri Solutions Limited, highlights our 8-year partnership, from combating bacterial leaf blight to developing brown planthopper-resistant rice. We'd like to thank Dr. Umashankar for providing his insights and his kind words. Find the full article below 👇 #innovation #collaboration #KeyGene35 #cropimprovement

Thank you Enza Zaden! 💚
KeyGene is celebrating 35 incredible years! 🎉 As one of the founding fathers and shareholders, we are proud to have been working together on cutting-edge technologies in the field of biotechnology for three and half decades. Congrats! Jaap Mazereeuw (CEO): "35 years ago, we envisioned it was a good idea to share the facilities that were necessary to keep the pace of the upcoming technologies. This started with basic biotechnological techniques and will evolve around system biology in the future.” Andreas Sewing (CSO) added, “Keygene has played a vital part at the start of Enza Zaden's journey to transform variety development through advanced molecular technologies, tools, and innovative ideas. 35 years later, Keygene is for us a trusted partner, expanding our internal 'lab bench' and blue ocean thinking.” 📰 Read the full interview: https://bit.ly/45Q1yU0 #KeyGene #EnzaZaden #Biotechnology #BreedingToFeedTheWorld #Innovation #FreedomToInnovate

Just another Monday at the Yelloway Greenhouse. Take a closer look at some of the beautiful variety of banana blossoms, including the well known and beloved Cavendish, and some wild relatives. A banana has both male and female flowers; the male flower at the bottom center, surrounded by the smaller female flowers, which can later turn into bananas. #Bananaflowers are arranged in clusters of a complex structure, an inflorescence botanically known as #thyrse #Yelloway #diversity #bananaflowers

This week, we celebrate KeyGene's 35th anniversary! On this occasion we have interviewed several stakeholders: our shareholders (Enza Zaden, Rijk Zwaan, LIMAGRAIN Vegetable Seeds and Takii Seed | Vegetables (EMEA)), two partners from other international seed businesses (Ingredion Incorporated from the US and Mahindra Group Agricultural Solutions from India), an academic partner (Lincoln University (NZ) ), one of our technology providing partners (Oxford Nanopore Technologies), and one of KeyGene’s own inventors. Of course the set of interviews was completed with an interview with KeyGene’s CEO. We have shared summaries of these interviews via a special edition of the KeyGene newsletter, accompanied by links to the full interviews. We would like to share this special edition of the KeyGene newsletter via this post too. We hope you will enjoy reading one or more of the interviews. https://lnkd.in/edKb_93n
