In the article 'Tackling Embodied Carbon in Buildings: Three Perspectives from Across the Value Chain' by Aleksandra Smith-Kozlowska, Arjan Dingste, Partner and Senior Architect at UNStudio, highlights the importance of thoughtful design in reducing embodied carbon. By adopting a whole lifecycle approach early in the design process, significant carbon reductions—up to 50%—can be achieved without major cost increases. Arjan also emphasizes the value of modelling whole life carbon to balance trade-offs between upfront embodied carbon and operational emissions, with examples like optimizing insulation or glazing choices. We are proud to be part of the transformative vision for Austin Light Rail, a project that redefines urban mobility through world-class design and people-first infrastructure. Led by Austin Transit Partnership (ATP), and designed in collaboration with HKS, Inc. Gehl - Making Cities for People, this project will connect communities, enhance public spaces, and integrate seamlessly with Austin’s evolving urban fabric. Phase 1 will feature 15 stations across nearly 10 miles, offering a new transit experience that connects major job centers, education hubs, and iconic destinations. With shaded urban corridors, pedestrian and cyclist paths, and a new bridge over Lady Bird Lake, Austin Light Rail is designed to prioritise sustainability, inclusivity, and neighborhood integration. This is more than a transit project—it’s a design-driven approach to mobility and city building, creating vibrant community hubs and fostering Austin’s unique identity.
