[Space Farming] 🚀 As we enter a new age of space exploration, having a permanent settlement on Mars is now a reality in the not-so-distant future. Conquering the red planet is an exciting endeavour, but also one that brings several scientific, economic, and strategic benefits to our own planet and species. In our upcoming ReThink Food Challenge we challenge students to develop a business idea that offers an innovative, circular and sustainable approach to growing food on Earth by learning from research on space farming. So what can you take away from the pioneering study by WUR’s Rebeca Gonçalves, Jochem Evers, Wieger Wamelink? Well, for one, Wageningen Plant Research shared that intercropping can be a game-changing method for farming on Mars. Their study shows that intercropping can significantly boost plant growth on Martian soil under certain conditions. #Intercropping involves cultivating #crops with complementary properties closely together, so they can aid each other in growth, resulting in higher yields and the optimization of resources such as water and nutrients. The researchers grew peas, carrots, and tomatoes in a type of Mars regolith simulant. Want to learn more? Check out this post https://lnkd.in/gmb6FYVp or the full paper https://lnkd.in/gUEqeSzq For future changemakers: the registration for the ReThink Food Challenge opens 21 August! #intercropping #climatechange #farmingtechniques #agriculture #studentchallenge
#spacefarming 🚀 Farming on Mars takes a 'Giant Leap': intercropping can be a game-changing method ✨ 👩🚀 Hold on a second... farming on Mars? Yup! Scientists at Wageningen University & research are researching the local production of fresh food in exploration missions, in order to increase the colony’s food security and self-sustainability. But that's not all: all the technology developed for a self-sustainable colony on Mars, can be directly applied for the benefit of agricultural systems here on Earth, says lead researcher Rebeca Gonçalves. So what did researchers find out? Well, a pioneering study shows that intercropping can significantly boost plant growth on Martian soil under certain conditions. Intercropping involves cultivating crops with complementary properties closely together, so they can aid each other in growth, resulting in higher yields and the optimization of resources such as water and nutrients. Since the first Martian colonies will be extremely limited on such precious resources, this ancient approach may hold the key to our future on Mars 👽 🥕 The researchers grew peas, carrots, and tomatoes in a type of Mars regolith simulant (“regolith” being the technical term for a soil that has no organic matter or life present). This Martian regolith simulant, produced by a team of researchers at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is a near perfect physical and chemical match to the real Martian regolith, used by NASA itself to test the rovers that go on Martian missions. All three species grew well in the Martian regolith, yielding over half a kilo of fresh produce with only a minimum addition of nutrients. However, the research breakthrough came through the fact that one of the species, tomato, performed remarkably better when grown using the intercropping technique compared to the traditional monocropping method, with significant increases in both size and overall yield 🍅 🌱 Space agriculture research can provide critical insights into resilient Earth agricultural practices that can benefit arid and degraded soils. In fact, the study carried out a control treatment utilizing sandy soil, which has similar properties to degrading soils on Earth. Results were even more promising than with the Martian regolith, where intercropping led to a significant increase in yield for 2 out of the 3 species present, and gave an overall significant advantageous performance compared to the species monocropping counterparts. Gonçalves emphasized: "Whatever we learn from farming on Mars can be practically and directly translated to farming on Earth. If we can unlock the secret to regenerating poor soils while developing a high-yielding, self-sustainable food production system—exactly the goal of Martian agriculture research—we will have found a solution for two problems with a single strike.” Jochem Evers | Wieger Wamelink | #intercropping #climatechange #farmingtechniques #agriculture
