Scientists have described the mountains of the Hindu Kush Himalaya as a biosphere on the brink. We are also a region teeming with stewards of nature: Indigenous and local-knowledge holders, individuals, communities, heads of municipalities, policymakers, NGOs or pioneers of nature-positive businesses that are protecting landscapes and bringing back water sources. ICIMOD is seeking to find these champions of nature in our region, reward their work, and accelerate their impact by raising their profile, through our annual Dr Andreas Schild Memorial Mountain Prize. Two prizes each worth USD 2500 will highlight key contributions in 🔹The restoration and conservation of Water and Mountain Landscapes 🔹Excellence in Climate Communication, in journalism, film, digital communications or campaigning, or podcasts. If you know a restoration hero working in the HKH nations (Nepal, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, or Afghanistan) Nominate them today: https://lnkd.in/gDMTDcFH Nominations close: 25 Nov 2024 For more information: https://lnkd.in/gMFDPSZg Winners will be announced on 11 Dec 2024, the International Day for Mountains.

“The levels of planet-heating atmospheric carbon have never been so high. Last month the UN described us as being ‘way off track to meet our targets’ to slash these emissions. We are in unchartered waters,” states Pema Gyamtsho, Ph.D, Director General, ICIMOD. Pema will be leading ICIMOD’s delegation during the first week of COP29 and will personally support three bold initiatives led by the heads of state of Norway, Bhutan, and Nepal. In these events, we’ll advocate for the inclusion of Indigenous voices in discussions on severe cryosphere losses, support a new alliance aiming for a ‘race to zero’ in emissions, and push for a focused approach to Loss and Damage in mountain regions. ICIMOD’s global advocacy lead Kunzang K has arrived early in Baku ahead of this year’s global climate change conference, in order to train the next generation of negotiators, most of them women, from the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, small island developing states (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs). The training will help these negotiators to navigate the negotiation process, understand past decisions, and assess the current state of play: crucial to ensure the needs and ground-realities of climate-vulnerable nations are heard. Kunzang, whose long experience of global policy processes includes representing Bhutan and the LDCs at the UNFCCC, guiding Bhutan through the Paris Agreement and the Kigali Amendment, and playing a crucial role in securing recognition of loss and damage in the Paris Agreement rule book at COP24, will be on the ground for the full two weeks of the climate change conference. She’ll be among the ICIMOD delegates carrying party badges and will be inside the negotiation rooms with our regional member countries, supporting the priorities of the Hindu Kush Himalaya. ICIMOD Director General on the postponement of the Second Hindu Kush Himalaya Ministerial Mountain Summit The Second Ministerial Summit was scheduled for 22nd September 2024. While its postponement was a setback, ICIMOD's work to boost transboundary cooperation and partnerships have never been as vigorous, and many of the initiatives and relationships are starting to yield extraordinary results, writes DG Pema Gyamtsho, Ph.D. 'This work is less visible than summitry, it is the long-term, patient work of building relationships, of diplomacy, of organizing, and delivering, work to which ICIMOD remains unswervingly committed, and which, as flood after fire after drought tell us, has never been more urgent.' France’s top radio broadcaster, France Inter, interviews Bertrand BESSAGNET (白禾棠), who leads ICIMOD’s work on air pollution. “10 years ago, China was really the most polluted area. [But] for a few years, we have at least 4 countries, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Nepal, which are the most polluted at the moment,” Bessagnet states. “We have levels, in terms of fine particles, 5 to 10 times higher than what we can have in Europe.” To find out more of how ICIMOD is tackling pollution in the region click on https://lnkd.in/g68Wxt99 #AirPollution #SouthAsia #ActionForCleanAir

In recent years, air pollution has become an existential issue for people in India. In 2021, it is believed to have killed 2.1 million people. In recent years, the country has been exploring an airshed approach to solving for the issue. This requires for collaboration not just between states within India, but adjoining countries. India signed the Kathmandu Roadmap in 2019 agreeing to collective action with Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan.
