Earlier this week our CE Dr Marcos Pelenur led a panel on the future of industrial decarbonation at the Climate Change and Business Conference. Key takeaways: ➡️Businesses should always be moving forward to keep the momentum going ➡️We have the tech to act now but need to work on what is supporting and hindering decarbonisation ➡️There needs to be a coordinated approach across sectors, political parties, supply side and demand side to support New Zealand Inc. ➡️It's in our control if everyone works together – progress doesn't happen in isolation! 📷 Marcos Pelenur, EECA; Nicola Payne, New Zealand Steel; Vicky Webb, Aurecon; and Jonathan Pooch (he/him), DETA Environmental Defence Society (EDS), Sustainable Business Council NZ and Climate Leaders Coalition #CCBC24 #LeadingClimateAction #climateandbusiness #sustainablebusiness

How can your business boost efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint with electric vehicles? Leach & Co, a leading waste management company, has taken a bold step in aligning with Wellington City Council's sustainability goals by introducing their first electric off-road vehicle – a 20-tonne loader. This move has not only slashed their diesel use by 25,000 litres per year but also delivered surprising performance and cost benefits. Here’s what Leach & Co. learned from their low-emissions journey: ➡️ Explore unexpected savings – Transitioning to electric saved Leach & Co. 40% on fuel costs compared to a smaller diesel model. ➡️ Prioritise performance – The new electric loader exceeded power, speed, and responsiveness expectations, outpacing its diesel predecessor. ➡️ Enhance worker comfort – Reduced noise and vibrations mean more productive shifts and less driver fatigue. ➡️ Overcome infrastructure challenges – Careful planning ensured the right charging setup for the site. ➡️ Optimise maintenance – The electric loader has proved easier and quicker to maintain, saving time and reducing costs. "We are thrilled with the performance of our new electric loader, which not only supports our sustainability goals but also enhances our operational efficiency," says @Eric Souchon, CEO of Leach & Co. Want to learn how your business can achieve similar success? Dive into the full case study to see how Leach & Co. made the switch and what they’ve learned along the way. 🌍 EECA is proud to be a sponsor of the upcoming Climate Change and Business Conference next week 🌱 This year's theme – Leading Climate Action – reflects the urgent need for businesses and governments to play a pivotal role in driving emissions reductions and enhancing resilience in the face of a rapidly warming world. At EECA, we are committed to New Zealand's transition to a low-carbon economy. Our CEO Marcos Pelenur will be participating in a panel discussion on the future of industrial decarbonisation with Jonathan Pooch (he/him), DETA; Nicola Payne, New Zealand Steel; and Vicky Webb, Aurecon. This is a critical topic as we work towards reducing emissions and achieving our country's emissions reduction goals. We look forward to sharing insights, learning from others, and collaborating on effective strategies for decarbonising our economy. Tairāwhiti region is working toward a low carbon economy with the new Regional Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) report we've published today. It shows how the forestry sector could play a key role in pushing more fossil fuels out of the energy system. Up to 90% of the region’s energy needed for heat used in manufacturing has the potential to be met by biomass, a low-carbon fuel source. The report provides insights and recommendations to improve efficiency, future-proof energy investments, and make the move to renewable energy easier for local businesses. It highlights the dominance of biomass in the region and how Tairāwhiti’s unused wood residue could be transformed into commercial biofuel with demand set to grow as the region switches to clean energy. A big thanks to the organisations involved, including Trust Tairāwhiti, FirstLight, Transpower New Zealand, ElectroNet Group, large process heat users in the region, as well as forest owners and gentailers for their collaboration. Our Regional Heat Demand Database (RHDD) now includes data for the whole country for the first time. Process heat (for example boilers used in manufacturing and industry) is responsible for around 20% of New Zealand's energy-related emissions. The RHDD can be used to visualise process heat demand by region or sector, aiding decision-making for the transition to cleaner fuels. The database highlights: ➡ 713 sites with a total process heat energy consumption of 28,141 GWh per year. ➡ Auckland has the highest site count, primarily in the food and beverage sector. ➡ Waikato has the largest process heat energy consumption - mainly in the wood product manufacturing industry.
