Thank you Pramudie Gunaratne and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) NSW Branch for a wonderful evening Saturday 2 November. It was a pleasure to be there to celebrate Associate Professor Loyola McLean and my darling, Professor Philip Hazell as the joint recipients of the 2024 NSW Branch Meritorious Service Award. Both Loy and Phil have made outstanding contributions to the practice of Psychiatry. Loyola McLean’s distinguished career has been both groundbreaking and selfless. As a researcher credited with more than 100 peer reviewed articles, Loyola has pioneered research into perinatal and early infant attachment, consultation-liaison psychiatry, somatic psychotherapy and more. Her expertise as a senior clinician in the disciplines of psychotherapy and perinatal mental health is acknowledged and highly regarded across the profession. As a teacher and administrator, Loyola has dedicated herself to the education, training, and mentoring of junior doctors. Philip Hazell is an internationally recognised child and adolescent psychiatrist who has worked on the frontline of mental health services for over three decades. His long career has brought hope to the many children and families who have been in his care, and he has been an inspirational supervisor and mentor to young clinicians. As a researcher, Philip’s early work on the impact of adolescent suicide and attempted suicide on peers has influenced the way schools respond to the suicide death of a student. His work on the lack of efficacy supporting the benefits of tricyclic anti-depressants for depression in children and adolescents was instrumental in accelerating the discontinuation of prescribing these drugs. Loyola and Philip have both made enormous contributions to the College as branch and bi-national committee members, examiners, and as presenters and convenors of programs for conferences. For a five-year term prior to April 2024, Loyola was an NSW Branch Committee Member and has also served as a Faculty of Psychiatry Bi-national committee member. She remains a RANZCP examiner and Psychotherapy Written Case marker. Philip Hazell has served as Chair of the RANZCP Subcommittee for Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and as a member of the RANZCP Committee for Training. Prior to that he served as a member of the RANZCP Committee for Examinations. Congratulations Loy and Phil xox

Over 450 delegates joined us at the International Congress on Neuropsychiatry in Melbourne, hosted by the RANZCP Section of Neuropsychiatry in conjunction with the International Neuropsychiatric Association. The pre-Congress FND Symposium also attracted over 280 delegates. Both events brought together leading experts and international innovators and was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas and build valuable professional networks. A huge thank you to Co-Convenors, Professor Richard Kanaan and Professor Valsamma Eapen, and everyone who contributed to making this event a success. We look forward to continuing these important conversations and collaborations!
